NSS 2004/2007 Orientation November 2006 TO: RE: Students enrolled in UB Real Estate Division courses NSS 2004/2007 Orientation Several Real Estate Division courses require the use of statistical software. One option is the NSS program, either Version 2004 or Statistical software is not included as a part of the course materials and must be purchased separately. In each course, the workbook will provide software instructions for running necessary statistical procedures. 1 However, you are expected to have a working knowledge of how to operate the software program and interpret its results. Therefore, we have also produced this Orientation document as introduction to NSS, explaining how to install and run NSS for use in this course, as well as a basic overview of the program's features. In general, NSS is very easy to learn and use. The user interface is similar to that of Word and Excel and its output is easily transferred to these programs. There is comprehensive help within the program as well as customer support. Note that the material contained in these documents will not cover all of the capabilities of the NSS program. For a complete explanation of statistical procedures which are not covered in the course, you should refer to the NSS Help menu found in the program. For further help, students may wish to download the "NSS Quick Start & Self Help Manual": OMPUTER REQUIREMENTS It is essential that students have at least a very basic knowledge of how a computer operates. If you are unfamiliar with the operation of personal computers, the ertified General Accountants Association of anada has made available to the Real Estate Division a microcomputer tutorial entitled omputer Tutorial 1 (T1) - Windows Basics, which serves as an excellent introduction to computers. This tutorial may be purchased from the Real Estate Division. Alternatively, you may wish to visit your local bookstore for a how to manual or investigate schools, colleges, or libraries in your area which may offer a course designed for computer beginners. NSS operates in a Windows operating system. To use NSS, you will need to have basic computer skills in order to do the following: install a program from a D-ROM; start an application; 1 Some course workbooks may provide instructions in SPSS. If so, a separate document will be posted to the course's "Online Readings" page, explaining alternative NSS instructions.
Real Estate Division Page 2 of 6 University of British olumbia use a mouse; use menus and submenus; use click and drag actions; and save and load files to a hard disk drive. The following are the recommended or minimum systems requirements for installing NSS 2004/2007: Installation requires that you have Microsoft Windows 98, ME, XP, or NT 4.0 system installed on 2 your computer ; Pentium-class processor; 32MB or more of random access memory; A hard disk with at least 30MB of available disk space (for Base System); A D-ROM drive. INSTALLING NSS Before beginning your lessons, you should have installed the NSS program on your computer. To install NSS 2004/2007, insert the D. When the NSS and PASS Installation D" windows appears, select Install NSS and PASS, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen. If this menu does not appear, then instead select Start ý Run... and type D:\setup_N.exe (D represents your D drive; if your D is in a different drive than D, enter this drive letter instead). On the Select Destination Directory window, click Next to save the program to the default location (or specify desired location). On the "Backup Selected Files" window, select "Yes" and on the next window either click "Next" to accept default backup location or specify a new location. On the "Microsoft Access Support" window, you do not need to select this option. On "Select Group Name", you may click "Next". On the "Ready to Install" window, click "Next". The program files will now be installed. This will take a few minutes. On the "Installation ompleted" window, click "Finish". You may now open NSS, from the icon in the "NSS-PASS" window or by selecting Start ý All Programs ý NSS-PASS ý NSS. When NSS starts, the "NSS-PASS Serial Number Registration" window should open. If not, in the "NSS 2004/2007 Data" window, select Help ý Serial Numbers... Enter the NSS serial number from the sticker on the back of the NSS package and click OK. You have now installed NSS. NSS TUTORIAL AND SUPPORT NSS has an in-program tutorial that you may wish to complete before starting the work in this course. Open the NSS program, and select Help ý Help ý Index ý Tutorial. It is a step-by-step introduction to the software and its capabilities, which could take several hours to go through in its entirety. However, students in past courses have reported it to be worthwhile. 1 Microsoft, Windows, and Windows 98 are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Microsoft orporation in the U.S. and/or other countries.
Real Estate Division Page 3 of 6 University of British olumbia NSS also offers very helpful customer support, by or phone. ontact details can be found on their website: NSS FILE TYPES There are two file types in NSS that you will use in this course: data and output. Data files contain the data used in analysis. You may have only one data file open at a time. Output files contain the results of statistical procedures. They are text files and can be manipulated similar to text documents in any word processor. NSS file types have the following extensions: worksheets (.S0, that is zero, not "oh"); datasheets (.S1,.S2, etc.); and log files (.RTF). If you specify that you want to open an NSS file of a given type, NSS will display all the files in the directory with the default extension. Although you can change these extensions, it is not recommended. When we refer to a variable in an NSS database, we are actually referring to a specific column of a datasheet. All procedures analyze one or more variables from these datasheets. NSS accepts both numeric and text data. Numeric data may contain up to 16 digits and text data may contain up to 1,000 characters per cell. Every S0-type database is made up of two or more files with appropriate extensions. The Variable-Info file has the extension S0. The datasheets have the extensions S1, S2, etc. Hence, a database called AB with 512 variables (two datasheets) would appear on your hard drive as three files: AB.S0, AB.S1, and AB.S2. This is important to remember when backing up or copying an S0-type database. NSS database files are actually a Microsoft Excel 4.0 compatible spreadsheet files. NSS has used this format because it is popular, transportable, and because it allows NSS to provide a familiar, spreadsheet-style interface complete with formatting and formulas. Each NSS datasheet has room for 256 variables (columns) and 16,384 observations. You can add as many datasheets to a database as you like (thereby increasing the number of variables), but you cannot increase this maximum number of observations. OURSE DATABASES The lessons in this course will use several databases which must be downloaded from Online Readings on your ourse Resources webpage. Each database has two required files:.s0 (worksheet) and.s1 (datasheet); the database will not work without both files. After NSS has been installed, you should create a new folder in the NSS folder named UB (e.g., :\Program Files\NSS\UB\) and copy all of the database files into this folder using Windows Explorer. It is important that you make a backup copy of these files as soon as you download them. It is also recommended that at the end of each lesson, you continue to make a backup copy of the particular databases you have been working on. This will ensure that the additions you make to the databases are not lost in the event of a computer or software problem.
Real Estate Division Page 4 of 6 University of British olumbia NSS OPERATIONS Introduction to NSS Databases Databases in NSS are organized in a series of columns and rows. The rows contain the data from each observation (i.e. each property), while the columns contain the variables which are being measured (i.e. the lot size or number of bedrooms for each property, etc.). An NSS data file or window resembles a spreadsheet, but it is not a true spreadsheet as no calculations can be made within it. You can type data directly into a blank data file or modify data in an existing file. hanges made to the file do not take effect until the file is saved by clicking File ý Save. Since data are not saved automatically, it is good practice to save a file you are working on periodically (the same advise applies to other file types as well). Opening Databases Start NSS by selecting NSS from Start ý All Programs ý NSS-PASS. This brings up the main NSS spreadsheet and file window. To open a database, select File ý Open. Browse to where you saved the course database files and then double click on the database file you wish to open. The data should now be displayed for the database in the "Sheet1" window. Variable View At the bottom of the data display there are two tabs, one marked Sheet1 and the other Variable Info. By clicking on Variable Info, information about the variables is displayed in columns. By clicking on Sheet1, you can view the data itself. Multiple NSS Windows When you open an NSS module, e.g., Scatter Plots, it opens in a separate window. If you click on the NSS tab at the bottom of the Windows screen, it will list the modules open. One will be "NSS Data - Database Name". If you have run any procedures, another will be "NSS Output". In addition, you will see any modules you have used but not yet closed. This can be very handy if you want to re-do the same calculation numerous times in different databases. Simply leave the module open, return to "NSS Data", and select File ý Open to open the new database you want (when prompted, you may choose to save any changes to the original database). When the desired new database is open, click on the module window you want and press "Run" -- the same procedure will be re-run for the new data. To close a window, you can select File ý lose Procedure or click the X in the top right corner of the window Output Windows and Log Files When you run an NSS procedure, it displays the output in an "NSS Output" window. Each new procedure run clears this output and replaces it, so if you want to save a report you must do so before running a new procedure. In the "NSS Output" window, if you select File in the top menu, you will find the "Log" features. You can save the output data into a log file by selecting File Save As, specifying a name (e.g., "L7output.RTF"), and
Real Estate Division Page 5 of 6 University of British olumbia then selecting where you want the file stored. To save further output, you can select File Add Output to Log. Or, alternatively, you may wish to select File Toggle Auto-Log which will automatically save all output to the current log file. To close the output window you can select File ý lose Output Window or click the X in the top right corner of the window. NSS will not ask you if you want to first save the output, so ensure you have saved it before closing. Often, you may not need to save the output, since you will be carrying out many statistical tests and will not want to save the output for all of them, particularly since you can easily regenerate the results should you wish to. However, if you wish to save these output files, you may do so by specifying a name and folder. Transformations Transformations allow you to use mathematical and logical operations to create new variables from existing ones. For example, a database may include information on sale price and house size (square footage). If you were interested in creating a variable that represented sale price per square foot, you would create a transformation for such a variable. Transformations may be carried out in the "Transformation" column in the "Variable Info" window or by selecting Data ý Enter Transform. In the Transforming window, you can view the transformations which will be commonly used in this course. ommonly used transformations include the standard arithmetic operations of addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), division (/), and exponentiation (**). Other mathematical functions are shown alphabetically in the "Available Functions" menu on this window. Below are brief instructions for the two alternative methods for creating a transformation. The NSS Help menu offers good advice on transformations. Transformation Method 1: Variable Info lick on the "Variable Info" tab at the bottom left of the NSS window. Under Name, for the next available variable type in name desired, e.g., Price per sqft. Under Transformation, type the formula desired, using either variable names or numbers: e.g., 1/2 or Sale Price/LivingArea hoose Data from the top menu and select Recalc urrent or Recalc All to run the transformation. lick on "Sheet1" at the bottom left of the NSS window to view the newly transformed variable. Transformation Method 2: Data ý Enter Transform Select Data ý Enter Transform. (Note: you can open the "Enter Transform" window by double clicking on the Transformation cell in the "Variable Info" window) Specify Result Variable: choose next available variable number. ***important, otherwise you may transform over existing variables*** Under Transformation Formula, either type formula in box (e.g., 1/2) or use "Available Functions" and "Argument Variables" to create the formula (helpful for complicated formulas with many variables). lick OK. lick on Variable Info tab at the bottom left of the NSS window; you will see the formula beside the result variable selected (if formula is beside the wrong variable, you forgot to specify Result Variable; delete the formula and start again!) Under Name, for the result variable type in name desired. hoose Data from the top menu and select Recalc urrent or Recalc All to run the transformation. lick on "Sheet1" at bottom left of NSS window to view the transformed variable.
Real Estate Division Page 6 of 6 University of British olumbia Templates If you are repeating or modifying a previous process or calculation, you can simply return to the previous NSS module window and change the inputs required, rather than starting the process again from the start. If you are carrying out repeated commands with the same settings, you may wish to save a "Template". This will allow you to load the template later and easily re-create output or run the same test on different databases in future. To create and open a template: In any NSS module, click on Template tab. Under File Name, type in descriptive title you will remember, e.g., "Lesson7 regression" lick Save Template. To load this template in future, you can select the Template tab, and click Load Template. Printing NSS Output Printing NSS output is necessary for completing the lesson assignments. Printing from NSS is a straightforward process. To print one page or all of an output file, click the printer icon or select File ý Print. Normal Windows functions for cutting and pasting text can be used to transfer NSS output to a word processor, if required for assignments. This allows you to easily cut and paste a part of a report or graph. The NSS site lists some specific printer issues here:
