3 START MENU TIPS QUICK TIPS TO PERSONALIZE THE START MENU #1 QUICK ACCESS TO THE START MENU To quickly access the Start menu, press the Windows key, which will open the menu without you having to click on it. You can navigate through the menu using the arrow keys and jump to the Live Tile section of the menu using the Tab key. To access an area, such as All Apps, hit Enter when it s highlighted. #2 QUICKLY NAVIGATE ALL APPS When you have the All Apps section open and all the programs are listed alphabetically, instead of scrolling through all your programs, you can quickly access a section by pressing the appropriate letter. So, if you want to find the VLC media player, for example, you would press V, which will take you to the letter V and all the programs listed in that section. #3 INCLUDE LIBRARIES IN THE START MENU The Start Menu displays, by default, only links to Settings, File Explorer, Power and All Apps in the bottom left corner. However, you can also add a link to Libraries by going to Start > Settings > Personalization > Start and then clicking on the Customize list link. #4 RESIZE THE START MENU You can make the Start menu larger or smaller by clicking on the edges of the menu and dragging them up or down and/or left or right. You can t drag diagonally, though. #5 REARRANGING AND RESIZING TILES You can move your Live Tiles in the Start menu by clicking on them and holding, then dragging to the new location. You also have the option of resizing the tiles by right clicking the tile, going to Resize and choosing small, medium or wide. SYSTEM TIPS TIPS AND TRICKS TO KEEP YOUR SYSTEM RUNNING SMOOTHLY. #6 CHOOSING DEFAULT APPS AND FILE ASSOCIATIONS Associate your files with the apps you want to use. You can use different programs to open files and set them as defaults, which is especially useful if you constantly use other apps than the default ones to open up files. For example, if you prefer VLC as a media player, you can set it so that all video files open in VLC when you double click them. Here s how to create these associations: Step 1: Go to Settings > Systems > Default apps Step 2: Scroll down and you will find:

4 Choose default apps by file type, which allows you to associate a certain file type like.avi with a certain program Choose default apps by protocol, which offers more control over how default app requests are handled Set Default Apps, which allows you to use a method like the one in Windows 7 to set default apps. #7 CONFIGURE AUTOPLAY FOR REMOVABLE DRIVES Make life easier when connecting removable devices. AutoPlay is easy to configure in Windows 10 and makes life much easier when you are connecting things like USB drives, media players, or smartphones to your system. TO change the settings, do the following: Step 1: Go to the Start Menu > Settings > Devices. Step 2: Click on Auto Play. Enable or disable AutoPlay by toggling the on/off button. Step 3: Set the default action your system should take when you connect a removable device. #8 BACKING UP AND RESTORING FILES Back up your files for security purposes. If we haven t repeated it enough, we ll do it again. You should always back up your files. This way, you ll be safe if something happens to your machine, such as a virus infestation or it simply breaks down. BACKING UP YOUR FILES To back up your files, go to Start Menu > Settings > Update & Security. Select Back and then More Options. Select all the folders you want to back up by clicking the plus + sign. You can also set a schedule for how often backups are made and how long backup files are kept. RESTORING YOUR FILES To restore your files, got to Control Panel > System and Security > File History. Find the files you wish to restore and the click on the green Restore button for them to be moved back to their original location. You can move them to a different location by choosing Restore To and specifying the new destination folders. #9 CREATE A RECOVERY DRIVE A recovery drive will fix Windows issues. Windows updates sometimes come with bugs, or you might have accidentally deleted something, or a new program has made your system go haywire. To fix this problem, you need to create a recovery drive by following these steps: Step 1: Open the Start Menu and type Create a Recovery Drive in the Search box. Open the application and enter your password if necessary. Step 2: Make sure that you ve selected the Backup system files to recovery drive option and click Next. Step 3: Connect a blank USB drive with at least 8GB of space, select it, click New, then Create. Step 4: Click Finish once it s finished. You can now use this USB as a boot device to fix Windows when necessary.

5 #10 CREATING A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT Similar to a recovery drive, a restore point turns back the clock to a point where Windows was working properly. Windows 10 create a Restore Point whenever you install something new or when you update the system. However, you can also manually create a Restore Point by entering Create a Restore point in the search box in the Start Menu. Open the application, go to the System Protection tab, select Create, enter a description and then click Create and OK. Note that this option won t affect your files, so you still need to back those up. To roll your system back to a Restore Point, go to the Start Menu and type Recovery in the search box. Open the program. Go to the Recovery window and select Open System Restore. Select a System Restore Point, then choose Next and Finish. # 11 UNINSTALL A PROGRAM How to get rid of unwanted programs and apps Uninstalling a program is part of working with Windows 10. After all, sometimes you just want to get rid of a program or an app. The following instructions will tell you just how to do that: Step 1: Go to Start Menu > Settings > System > Apps & Features. You can also search for a particular app by using the search box. Step 2: Click on the App and select Uninstall. You can also do this by going to the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Click on the app in question and select Uninstall. These steps won t permit you to uninstall inbuilt apps. Usually, it s best to ignore these apps, even if you don t use them, because they don t take up a lot of space. However, if you want to get rid of them, you will have to enter the following string in Windows PowerShell, which you can access by running a search for it via the Start Menu. You can avoid this by restarting only Windows Explorer. To do this right click on the taskbar and launch the Task Manager. In the window that opens up, click on More Details then go to the Processes tab. Find Windows Explorer in the list, right click on it and select Restart. #13 CLEAN UP YOUR COMPUTER BY GETTING RID OF THE OLD WINDOWS INSTALLATION To free up some space on your computer, you can remove the files from your old installation of Windows by going to Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Disk Clean-up and then put a checkmark in the box next to Previous Windows Installations. Note that you should only do this if you are absolutely convinced you will not want to revert back to your original Windows installation. #14 HOW TO START IN SAFE MODE Sometimes, things go wrong and you need to start your computer in Safe Mode, which means Windows 10 will only launch with its basic settings, without loading any drivers. To launch in Safe Mode, press and hold the Shift key and then click Restart. A blue Advanced Startup screen will appear. Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, then Startup Settings and click Restart. When the computer restarts, a list of options will appear including Enable Safe Mode, Enable Safe Mode with Networking and Enable Safe Mode with Command Prompt. You ll likely

7 need to access the second option (Enable Safe Mode with Networking) as this will allow you to access the internet as well. DESKTOP TIPS QUICK TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE DESKTOP #15 CREATE MULTIPLE VIRTUAL DESKTOPS Windows 10 allows you to quickly create multiple virtual desktops, which you can use for various tasks. For example, you can have one desktop dedicated to work, one to entertainment and one for play, each one with the relevant shortcuts, which will certainly make you more organized. To do this, click the Task View button on the taskbar, right next to the search area, then click New Desktop. You can add as many as you need. #16 MOVING A WINDOW TO ANOTHER DESKTOP To move a window from the current desktop to another desktop, click on Task View, then click and hold on the window you want to move and drag it onto the appropriate desktop. You can also create a new virtual desktop for the window in question by dragging the window right onto the New Desktop button. #17 SHOW ALL APPS FROM ALL DESKTOPS ON YOUR TASKBAR The taskbar will show, by default, only the programs and windows for the current desktop, but you can set it to show the windows and apps from all your virtual desktops too. To do this, go to Start > Settings > System > Multitasking > Virtual Desktops and then choose All Desktops from the menu. #18 SEE WHAT S RUNNING ON ALL YOUR DESKTOPS You can see what programs and windows are open on each of your virtual desktops without having to switch to each one. Simple click on the Task View button and then hover with the mouse pointer over each desktop to see what s inside. You can then click on the window in question in the preview area to bring that window to the front. FILE EXPLORER TIPS TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF FILE EXPLORER #19 INTRODUCING QUICK ACCESS VIEW File Explorer comes with a great new feature called Quick Access view, which allows you to see the most recent folders and files you used along with the folders you use most frequently -- as well as allowing you to pin the folders to this area permanently. #20 PIN FOLDERS TO QUICK ACCESS To pin a folder to the Quick Access area, simply right click on it and select Pin to Quick access. To remove a folder from this area, right click and select Unpin from Quick Access. #21 TURN OFF QUICK ACCESS VIEW

8 If you find the Quick Access view irritating, you can turn it off quite easily. Go to View > Options on the Ribbon. A window will open up, where you have to open the drop-down menu under Open File Explorer to, then click This PC. WINDOWS 10 KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS Learn to navigate Windows 10 like a pro with these shortcuts. 9 Roll back your system to an older version of Windows without reinstalling. If you ve decided you don t like Windows 10, you can downgrade to your previous version of Windows for a month. After the month is up, you will have to reinstall your old Windows if you want to use it. So, here s how to restore to a previous version of Windows. Step 1: Go to the Start Menu > Settings Step 2: Choose Update & Security > Recovery Step 3: Follow the instructions on the screen to restore to a previous version of Windows. Keep in mind that some of your Windows apps won t work in a previous version of the operating system, which means you will need to restore them from the App Store.
