1 Installing Lotus Notes on Your Computer Lotus Notes release (Standard and Basic versions) You can install Lotus Notes on your PC just as you would install any other software. You may download the installation file or order the CD from the following web site where you will be prompted for your UWin id and your UWin password: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 32-bit, Windows XP Tablet PC 32-bit, Microsoft Windows Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate 32-bit are the supported Operating Systems Minimum Hardware Requirements: Notes 8 Standard 512 MB of RAM (1GB is recommended) for Windows XP 1GB (1.5GB strongly recommended) for Windows Vista 1GB available hard drive space Pentium IV 1.2GHz or faster processor Notes 8 Basic: Notes 8 Basic requirements are the same as Notes 7.0.x Upgrading an older version: You do not need to remove the previous version of Notes prior to installing Version 8. The installation program will search your drives for the previous versions of Notes. If you have an older version of Notes installed, it is recommended to install the new one in the same directory. All settings such as user preferences, icons on your workspace, Personal Address Book, etc. will be preserved. ****Important Note: Before installing the Lotus Notes software, please close all other applications your are running on your PC. This will include any anti-virus software you may be running as it may view the installation as malicious code. For instructions for installing from the Lotus Notes CD, see page 2. To Install from the Downloaded File: Once you have downloaded the file from the Software Depot, double-click on the file or for the Standard or Basic client, respectively, to initiate set up. The InstallShield Wizard (Fig. 1) will begin, showing with the path where the temporary files will be downloaded. Click on Next > to continue. Fig. 1 1

2 You will then see a dialogue box that shows you the files are being extracted. (Fig. 2 below) Skip now to page 3 to follow the instructions and complete your installation. Fig. 2 - To install from the Lotus Notes CD Insert the Lotus Notes 8 installation CD into the CD-ROM drive of your computer. If the Auto Run option is enabled for you computer s CD-ROM drive, an installation wizard will be launched automatically. Otherwise launch Windows Explorer, browse the CD-ROM drive files and double click on the Client folder, then double click on the Win32Intel folder. Then double click on the setup.exe file to invoke the Lotus Notes installation wizard. You will be greeted by the Welcome Page. Click on Install IBM Lotus Notes 8 in the left hand menu. To install the Lotus Notes client click on the link that says Install IBM Lotus Notes 8 Fig. 3 2

3 You will see a dialogue box Preparing to Install (Fig. 4) Fig. 4 The Lotus Notes Installation screen will then appear (see Fig. 5), read the message and click Next > to continue. The Setup program will copy temporary installation files onto your hard drive. Fig. 5 Fig. 6 A dialogue box will appear next, prompting you to read the License Agreement (See Fig. 6). You can press the Page down key or use the scroll bar to see the rest of the agreement. To install Notes you must accept this agreement. If you choose No Setup will exit. Click Next > to continue. 3

4 On the next screen (see Fig. 7) type your user name and your company s name. If you are the only person using Lotus Notes on this particular computer, make sure that Only for me (Single User Install) is selected then click on Next > to go to the next screen. If you are using a computer with multiple Lotus Notes users, select Multi- User install. This option requires you to have multiple Windows user accounts setup for each user. If you have multiple user accounts with Windows Vista, this option will be selected automatically. Fig. 7 You will now be prompted to choose the location for the Lotus Notes files (see image to the right). Upgrading older version: The installation program will search your drives for previous versions of Notes. If you have an older version of Notes installed, you have to install the new version in the same directory, in order to preserve your settings. First Time Installation: If you don t change the default settings and this is the first time installation ( you re not upgrading a previous installation), Setup will install Notes on your C: drive in the following folders: Program Files: C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes Data Files: C:\Program Files\IBM\lotus\notes\data (Note: Windows Vista will not display the Data files location) If the installer is attempting to install the Program Files or Data files in another folder, press the change button and ensure the installer has the folders listed above for the Program Files and Data Files location. Sometimes you may need to install Notes on a different drive (for example you may not have enough free space on the C: drive). You can click Change to select the drive on which Notes will be installed (default is C: drive). If necessary, it is OK to put the Lotus\Notes folder on the one drive and Lotus\Notes\Data folder on another drive. Click Next > to move to the next step. 4

5 The next screen will be the Custom Setup screen (Fig. 9); however, please be cautioned to accept only the defaults on this page by clicking on the Next > button to move to the next screen. * If you had selected Domino Designer to be installed as well, you would see both Notes Client and Domino Designer options on the Custom Setup screen. If you are installing the Basic client, you will only see the Notes Client item in the list. This is normal. Fig. 9 You have finally reached the Ready To Install Program box. (Fig. 10) Click on Install to begin the installation of program. Fig. 10 5

6 While the Setup program copies all the required files from the CD-ROM to your hard drive, an indicator box will remain on your screen informing you of the installation progress. (Fig. 11) Fig. 11 Once all the required files are copied successfully to your hard drive, a dialogue box will come up telling you that The Install Wizard has successfully installed Lotus Notes 7.(Fig. 12) You will then click on Finish to complete the installation process. Fig. 12 If this is a first time installation, you will need to initialize your Notes Workstation before you will be able to use the software on a regular basis. If you were upgrading a previously configured installation, no additional setup is required. When you start Lotus Notes 8 for the first time, your workspace pages will be migrated to Version 8 Home Page and the design of your Personal Address Book will be upgraded using the Notes 8 template.
