2 Desktop Setting a Windows desktop theme Themes consist of desktop backgrounds, a windows color, sounds and a screen saver. Right-click on the desktop then click on Personalize. Click on one of the preinstalled themes OR click on Get more themes online located in the upper right corner of the themes window. o Locate the desired theme then click on the Download button. o Click on Open then follow the steps to download the theme. Changing the desktop background picture To change the desktop background picture to the next picture in the Windows theme, right-click on the desktop then click on Next Desktop Background OR to add a personal picture to the desktop: o Click on Personalize. o Click on Desktop Background. o Click on the Picture Location drop-down box then click one of the categories in the list o OR click on Browse and navigate to the desired folder of pictures. o Note: All pictures within a folder will automatically be displayed and selected as available desktop background pictures. To deselect a picture, remove the checkmark from the picture. o Set the Picture Position for how the picture will look on the desktop. o Click in the Change picture every: drop-down box and choose how often the desktop background picture will be changed. o Click on Save Changes. 3 Adding a Gadget Right-click on the desktop then click on Gadgets. Double-click on the desired gadget to add it to the desktop. Close or minimize the gadgets window to see the gadget on the desktop. To change the options for the gadget, click on the gadget, then click on the Options button. Make the desired changes then click on OK. To move the gadget to another location on the desktop, click and drag the gadget to desired location. To change the size of the gadget, click on the gadget then click on the Size button. o Note: The Size button will toggle through Large Size and Small Size. To remove a gadget from the desktop, click on the gadget then click on the Close gadget (X) button. Start Menu Opening the Start Menu Click on the Start button OR press the Windows key on the keyboard. Pinning a program to the Start Menu Open the Start Menu and locate the desired program. The left side of the menu is set to show the programs that have been recently opened. o Note: By default, the Start Menu is set to display the last 10 recent programs. Right-click on the name of the program then click on Pin to Start Menu. Pinned programs will be located on the left side of the Start Menu above recently accessed programs. Unpinning a program from the Start Menu Open the Start Menu then right click on the pinned program that is to be unpinned from the Start Menu. Click on Remove from this list. 4 Start Menu jump lists Open the Start Menu and move the mouse over a pinned or a recently used program to see the jump list for the program. To open an item in a jump list, move the mouse pointer over the item then left click on the name of the item. o Note: By default, jump lists are set to display the last 10 recent items. To pin/unpin a recent item to a jump list so that it is always available, move the mouse pointer over the desired item then click on the pin located to the right of the item name. Search to find programs or files Open the Start Menu. In the Search box type the name of the program or keywords for the file you wish to open. Click on the program or file from the list of search results. Changing the Start Menu settings Right-click on the Start button then click on Properties. Customize: Contains settings for how links and menus look and behave. Also has options for controlling the number of recent programs that are displayed in the Start Menu and the number of recent items that are displayed in Jump Lists. Power Button: By default the Power Button is set to Shut down the computer. The settings for the Power Button can be changed to any of the following options: Switch User, Log off, Lock, Restart, Sleep or Hibernate. Privacy: Options for storing and displaying recently opened programs in the Start Menu and recently opened items in Jump Lists on both the Start Menu and Taskbar. Click on OK. 5 Taskbar Program Icons By default, shortcuts for Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player are already on the taskbar. To open a program from the taskbar, click on the program icon. To open additional windows of the same program from the taskbar, right-click on the program icon on the taskbar then click on the name of the program from the jump list OR hold down the Shift key and click on the program icon. Note: Hovering the mouse over a program icon on the taskbar will show a thumbnail-sized live preview of each open window for that program. Pinning a program to the taskbar Open the Start Menu and locate the desired program. Right-click on the program icon then click on Pin to Taskbar. Note: To unpin a program from the taskbar, right-click on the program icon then click on Unpin this program from Taskbar. Changing the order of program icons Click and drag a program icon to the desired location on the taskbar. Taskbar jump lists Right-click on a program icon on the taskbar to see the jump list for the program. To open an item in a jump list, move the mouse pointer over the item then left click on the name of the item. o Note: By default, taskbar jump lists are set to display the top 10 frequent items. To pin/unpin a frequently used item to a jump list so that it is always available, move the mouse pointer over the desired item then click on the pin located to the right of the item name. Note: To pin a favorite webpage to the Internet Explorer program jump list, open Internet Explorer and go to the website then click and drag the icon located in front of the web address on top of the Internet Explorer program icon on the taskbar. 6 Windows Aero features Aero Peek Aero peek can be used to provide a temporary view of the desktop or an open window. This can be useful for viewing items stored on the desktop or viewing windows of files or programs that are open in the background. Move the mouse to the right side of the taskbar and hover over the Show Desktop button OR press Win+Spacebar. To restore the windows, move the mouse away from the Show Desktop button OR release the Windows key. Note: To minimize open windows so they remain minimized, click the Show Desktop button OR press Win+D. To restore the windows, click the Show Desktop button again OR press Win+D again. Aero Shake Aero shake allows you to minimize all open windows except the active window. To use Aero Shake, click and drag the title bar of the window back and forth (shake). All other windows will become hidden. To restore the hidden windows, click and drag the title bar of the window back and forth (shake) a second time. Aero Snap Aero snap allows you to quickly arrange two windows side by side or maximize a window. Make sure the windows you are working with are not maximized. To move a window to the side of the screen, click and drag the title bar to the right or left side of the screen. This is useful for arranging two windows side by side. To maximize a window, click and drag the title bar to the top of the screen. Windows Flip 3D Window Flip 3D allows you to cycle through open windows. Press Windows+Tab to open Windows Flip 3D. This will display open windows in a 3D stack. To cycle through the open windows, keep holding down the Windows key while pressing the Tab key. o Note: Alt+Tab also works to cycle through open windows, however, instead of a 3D stack, it displays a thumbnail for each of the open windows. 7 Windows 7 Programs Calculator Click on Start-All Programs-Accessories-Calculator OR press the Windows button and type Calculator in the Search box. To change the type of calculator OR function of the calculator, click on View and choose from the following: o Standard o Scientific o Programmer o Statistics o Unit Conversion o Date Calculations o Worksheets Mortgage, Vehicle Lease, Fuel Economy (mpg or L/100 km) Sticky Notes Sticky notes can be used for making a to-do list, writing down notes, phone numbers, or anything else you need to remember. Click on Start-All Programs-Accessories-Sticky Notes OR press the Windows button and type Sticky Notes in the Search box. To add a new sticky note click the + in the upper left corner of the sticky note. To change the color of a sticky note, right-click on the sticky note and choose from the available color options. To increase the font size of a sticky note, press Ctrl+Shift+>. To decrease the font size, press Ctrl+Shift+<. To add items to a sticky note in a bulleted list, press Ctrl+Shift+L. To change the bulleted list to a numbered list, press Ctrl+Shift+L a second time. Press Alt+F4 to close a sticky note but not delete the sticky note. To reopen a sticky note, click on Start-Sticky Notes. o Note: If Sticky Notes are pinned to the Taskbar, they will open automatically each time the computer starts up. To delete a sticky note, click on the x in the upper right corner of the sticky note. Technology Integration Center Page 7
8 Magnifier The Magnifier is used to make items on the screen appear bigger. Click on Start-All Programs-Accessories-Magnifier OR press the Windows button and type Magnifier in the Search box. A shortcut for activating the Magnifier is Win+(+). To see the toolbar for the Magnifier, move the mouse over the magnifying glass icon. Click on Views and choose the type of mode that you want to use. o Full-screen mode In full-screen mode, the entire screen is magnified. You can then have the Magnifier follow the mouse pointer. o Lens mode In lens mode, the area around the mouse pointer is magnified. When you move the mouse pointer, the area of the screen that is magnifies moves along with it. o Docked mode In docked mode, only a portion of the screen is magnified, leaving the rest of the desktop in a normal state. You can then control which area of the screen is magnified. Click on the Options button to set the lens size, turn on color inversion or set the zoom. To close the Magnifier, click on the x in the upper right corner of the Magnifier toolbar. Snipping Tool The Snipping Tool is used for capturing (copying) areas of a screen. Click on Start-All Programs-Accessories-Snipping Tool OR press the Windows button and type Snipping Tool in the Search box. Click on the drop-down arrow next to New and choose the type of snipping tool that you want to use: o Freeform Snip use to draw an irregular line, such as a circle or triangle, around an object o Rectangular Snip use to draw a rectangular selection around an object o Window Snip use to capture a window such as a browser window or a dialog box o Full Screen Snip use to capture the entire screen To add an annotation on top of a screen capture, use the Pen Tool. o Click on the drop-down arrow next to the Pen Tool to customize the pen. To highlight an area of the screen capture, use the Highlighter Tool. To clear an annotation or highlighted area, click on the Clear button, then click once on each item you want to erase. To copy the screen capture so that it can be pasted in another program such as Microsoft Word: o Click on the Copy button o Open the desired program o Click in the document where the screen capture will go o Press Ctrl+V to paste the screen capture into the document To save the screen capture to the computer so it can be used at a later time, click on the Save button. The screen capture can be saved in a.png,.jpg,.gif, or.html file format. Technology Integration Center Page 8
