The K2000 provides a seamless cross-platform imaging solution from a single Administrator Console enabling you to provision Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X platforms. You can deploy the configuration files, user states, and applications as an image to a single device or to multiple devices simultaneously. The K2000 provides the tools necessary to automate deployments in both homogeneous and heterogeneous hardware environments, and provides reliability of large-scale image deployments with multicast and task engine capabilities. The built-in driver feed automatically downloads Dell driver models, and the Package Management feature enables uploading third-party driver packages. You can also integrate the K2000 with the K1000 Systems Management Appliance to image the K1000 inventory. The K2000 is available as a virtual and physical appliance. 1
New features Version 3.7 introduces a new user Console design and support for multicast OS X deployments. New features in the K2000 appliance: New user interface design: Colors, controls, and other interface elements have been re-designed to improve usability in the Administrator Console. Improved navigation: A left navigation bar has been introduced to save space and to improve access to features. Customizable list pages: Columns on list pages can be resized, repositioned, and sorted, and you can choose the number of items to display. This release also includes an improved Refresh button for getting updated data in the list. In addition, user preferences persist throughout a login session. New Dashboard: The new Dashboard provides central access to important information through customizable and resizable widgets. Improved forms: Forms and configuration pages have been redesigned to eliminate the need for explicit Edit buttons. Field validation, and actions such as Duplicate and Cancel, have also been improved. Improved panel display: Options have been re-organized on the panel pages to improve access. Multicast OS X deployments: This release adds support for multicast Mac OS X deployments from the Administrator Console if your network configuration supports multicast routing. Enhancements The following is a list of enhancements implemented in the K2000 appliance: Table 1. Multicast enhancements Enhancement Supports multicast Mac OS X deployments Deprecated features The following features are not supported in this release. Table 2. Deprecated features Feature Support removed for Traditional Chinese from the K2000 Administrator Console, Media Manager, and documentation. The default language for traditional Chinese is English. Support removed for Spanish (Spain) from the K2000 Administrator Console, Media Manager, and documentation. The default language for Spanish (Spain) is Latin American Spanish Resolved issues The following is a list of issues addressed in this release. 2
Table 3. General resolved issues Resolved issue When you capture a new sysprepped image in version 3.7, a message now prompts you to select the check box to remove local files or to add pre-installation tasks to format the target device before deployment. Scripted installations no longer fail when you enter a MAK license in the wizard. Select the Volume or the Multi-Activation Licensing check box when using the MAK license for Windows 7 or higher. The KBE Main Registry Editor now enables you to modify the registry values for KBEs created with WinPE Table 4. Drivers resolved issues Resolved issue The driver compatibility report now supports Windows 8.1 (x86 and x64). You can now manually delete files from the drivers_postinstall directory. For non-english languages, the Driver Feed Settings page now displays accurate text when the Driver Feed is disabled Table 5. Remote Site Appliance resolved issues Resolved issue The Run now (Send Wake-on-LAN) for scheduled boot actions is now being triggered if the number of RSAs and devices in Network Inventory increases Known issues The following is a list of issues, including those attributed to third-party products, known to exist at the time of release. Table 6. General known issues Known issue The imaging time for devices with SAS drives is slow. When downloading log files, the appliance stalls if you are running IE 8 or IE 9. Workaround: Use Firefox, Safari, or Chrome. The K2000 becomes inaccessible when you attempt to access the Package Management page if an offboard-storage device connection to the K2000 is lost. Modifying the K2000 Samba Share Password from the General Settings page causes image captures and deployment tasks to fail
Known issue Workaround: Do not change the password during deployments. If the license for the K2000 appliance reaches its maximum limit, and you boot a Mac device that is not in the K2000 Device Inventory, the error message License exceeded does not display on the target device. Instead, the target device continues trying to boot from the appliance. The Custom HAL Replacement post-installation task is limited to K-Images. When performing manual upgrades, sometimes the upgrade process is not visible in the K2000 Administrator Console. User state offline migration with non-latin usernames might fail Workaround: Perform online migrations for the user states. Device names are not retained while deploying sysprepped K-Images and scripted installations for x64 and x86 Japanese Windows operating systems. Creating a NetBoot environment image fails when certificates from Apple expire Workaround: Download the current Mac OS version. The RAID status page does not display details for some HDD models. Deployments fail when attempting to deploy a WIM or K-Image captured from a dual-partitioned computer to a computer with one partition that has a CD/DVD drive. The deployment attempts to deploy the second image on to the CD/DVD drive Workaround: Use the DISKPART utility to create two partitions, and issue the assign letter DISKPART command to re-assign the drive letter of the CD/DVD drive. If the User State Migration Tool (USMT) is not installed on the appliance and you attempt to add a Scan User States Offline post-installation task, WIM images and K-Images fail to rebuild Workaround: Upload the USMT to the appliance. Navigate to Library > User States, and select Choose Action > Upload. When a K2000 appliance is linked to a K1000 appliance, boot actions are not triggered. This occurs when the MAC address is retrieved from the K1000 device inventory, which is based on labels instead of the Ethernet or the en0 address Workaround: To trigger boot actions, go to the K2000 appliance Devices > K1000 Inventory page and ensure that inventory from the K1000 appliance is using the Ethernet or the en0 MAC address instead of the WiFi en1, or the heading en2 MAC address. On the IE 9 browser, the K2000 Administrator Console stops responding for up to 2 minutes when you click Settings > Appliance Performance. Deployments of Window 8.1 K-Images and WIM images fail when there are no pre-installation tasks included in the deployment
Known issue The Reboot and Power Off buttons should display a confirmation before applying the action. Deployments of Windows 8.1 Sysprep K-Images fail when the Remove local files not in image option set. When deploying a USB image, the cleanup task, which is the last task that runs before the installation is complete, might fail if a process is running that conflicts with cleanup.vbs or kcleanup.exe Workaround: See When creating a bootable USB device, the status of formatting the USB device does not display in the command-line prompt. When you delete a file from a K-Image and click Save instead of selecting the Commit or Revert options, which verify the image, the changes appear to have taken place, but they have not Workaround: Duplicate the image to have the Commit or Revert options appear in the duplicated image to apply the changes and to remove the old image. Selecting the Spanish language to install the Windows AIK (WAIK) to build a KBE for devices running Windows 7 displays the error message: The selected language is not installed on WAIK Workaround: Select English to install the WAIK, or select the Spanish language Windows ADK to build the KBE for Windows 7 and higher. Imported ASR image deployments fail if no ASR images were captured from the K2000 appliance NOTE: The appliance creates the ImageStore directory for ASR images captured from the K2000 appliance. Workaround: Create the ImageStore folder in the petemp directory. Table 7. Multicast deployment known issues Known issue Multicast deployments do not continue on errors Workaround: Do not set multicast deployments to continue on errors. The appliance must reach the duration set in the Timeout to wait for connection 'Ready to receive' state for boot actions set to Run at next boot if you select the Run now (Send Wake-on-LAN) option immediately after creating a Run at next boot boot action If a target device disconnects unexpectedly during a multicast deployment, the appliance must reach the duration set in the transmission timeout period before you can start a new multicast deployment
Known issue Deleting a multicast deployment does not terminate the process, which means that you cannot start a new multicast deployment. Workaround: Adjust the deployment timeout period. The default multicast deployment timeout is 10 minutes. When a scan user state task fails, and you attempt to retry the task from the Task Error page, the status displays as succeeded. However, the selected user states are not scanned or uploaded to the appliance. Workaround: Reboot the target device from the Task Error page, then boot the device back in to the KBE and restart the deployment. Rebooting the device creates a new working directory for the USMT profile data so that the profiles can be successfully captured. The K2000 virtual appliance requires 4GB RAM to support multicast deployments. If a boot action is interrupted during a multicast deployment, the appliance must reach the duration set in the transmission timeout period before you can start a new multicast deployment. For some Mac OS X multicast deployments, devices are booting in to the NetBoot environment image instead of in to the OS. If you manually boot the target device in to the OS, the post-installation tasks are not completed. Workaround: Repeat the multicast deployment. In small environments, you can set the Timeout to wait for connection 'Ready to receive' state to accommodate time to go to each device and press the Option key while restarting the device, and then select the NetBoot environment image to boot. Multicast deployments fail for Mac OS X Table 8. Remote Site Appliance known issues Known issue The Remote Site Appliances page does not display the correct data for the RSA when the RSA data is reverted to the K2000 onboard storage. Workaround: Synchronize the RSA when you change the storage from onboard to offboard or the other way around. The RSA Check for Server Updates button on the Settings > Appliance Maintenance page under Automatic Updates does not work. Earlier versions of the RSA do not synchronize with the K2000 appliance version 3.7. Workaround: Upgrade the RSA to version 3.7. When switching between linked appliances, the drop-down list in the top-right corner of the Administrator Console should display only the linked appliances instead of all of the appliances to which you logged into using single sign on (SSO) from the K
Known issue When attempting to upload media to an RSA, the Media Manager displays the error message: Invalid Response: Please check the hostname provided Workaround: Verify that the host name or the IP address is the host name or IP address of the K2000, and not the RSA. When generating an SSL certificate on the K2000 and the RSA, certain special characters, such as % and $ are incorrectly allowed in the State and Locality fields. The RSA becomes inaccessible when you reboot the RSA during reverse migration from offboard to onboard storage NOTE: To avoid data loss, export the RSA data to a different location or device, and do not unplug or reboot the RSA until the reverse migration has completed. When upgrading an RSA to version 3.7, if you do not synchronize the K2000 data to the RSA after the upgrade, deployments might fail Workaround: RSA versions 3.6 and lower require updating the RSA to version 3.7, and synchronizing the data to get the latest configuration files for the task engine. Table 9. Drivers known issues Known issue Video drivers downloaded from the Driver Feed are not installed for Windows XP x86 and Windows XP x64 on target devices using the drivers share directory for the following models: 2591 Dell Latitude E6400 Dell OptiPlex 380 Dell Latitude E5400 Dell Free Fall Sensor device Workaround: Download the driver packs for audio, video, and chipset drivers manually. Dell KACE recommends adding only network drivers to the drivers share directory, that is, drivers that allow devices to boot to the K2000 Network Boot Environment. Combination packages or driver packages that contain installation packages are not available to the Driver Feed. After upgrading to the K2000 appliance version 3.7, drivers downloaded from the Driver Feed for the Latitude E5400 model are not installed with Windows 7 x86 scripted installations and K-Image deployments Workaround: Re-download all subscribed feeds if you are upgrading from a version earlier than 3.5. Select the Enable Driver Feed check box on the Driver Feed > Driver Feed Settings page for the K2000 to update Dell drivers to the drivers_postinstall directory. Dell KACE requires moving any drivers that get stored in a directory named drivers_old to the drivers_postinstall directory. Drivers might not get added if the Windows XP image does not contain the correct kernel and Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). 7
Known issue Workaround: Use the Custom HAL Replacement post-installation task. An empty list displays when you select Window 8.1 from the View By > Operating System drop-down list on the Library > Drivers and the Driver Feed pages. An empty list also displays when you select Window 8.1 from the Remote Site Detail page Dependencies (Hidden) Show option Workaround: Select Window 8 to filter the drivers to show drivers for Windows 8 and higher. Table 10. Scripted installations known issues Known issue The Automatic selection of KMS Client Keys does not work if the version of Windows does not match the product key that you selected from the KMS client key options Workaround: If you have multiple versions of Windows installed, ensure that the Windows OS version has the correct product key to create a K2000 scripted installation image. Settings that you create in the scripted installation wizard or in a config.xml file must be compatible with the hardware. If the hardware cannot handle the settings, the Windows installer causes the unattended scripted installation to fail. Scripted installations of Windows XP SP2 might fail on NETGEAR offboard-storage devices. Regional settings for scripted installations must match the language of the scripted installation source media; otherwise, messages do not display in the correct language. When using the Workstation Name Changer text file to rename a target device, the name change task does not work with languages that contain accent marks over characters. Windows 7 scripted installation deployments fail when using a WinPE 4.0 or WinPE 5.0 KBE Workaround: When creating WinPE 4.0 KBE using the Media Manager and Windows ADK, click OK to the two errors that display. The deployment continues. When scripted installations of Windows Vista x86 OS are initiated after booting a target device in to a WinPE 4.0 KBE, an error can occur with the following message: Windows could not load device compatibility data. When using the scripted installation wizard, an error message should appear if you enter Administrator as the username in the Username field under the Administrator Account settings because Microsoft reserves Administrator as an account name Table 11. Media Manager known issues Known issue In some instances, the source CD does not upload successfully from the Media Manager when the mapped Z: drive is not accessible or cannot be authenticated
Known issue Downloading the Media Manager from the Latin American Spanish K2000 appliance displays the Media Manager product name in Spanish (Spain) on the MSI Installer and on the shortcut icon System requirements Before updating to or installing version 3.7 on your K2000 appliance, ensure that your system meets the minimum hardware and software requirements. For the latest information about system requirements, go to Upgrade and compatibility The minimum version required for installing the K2000 version 3.7 is This upgrade is only for 64-bit appliances. Check the version number on your appliance by clicking About K2000 at the bottom left of the Administrator Console. Product licensing The K2000 license key is included in the Welcome for the product.
