2 Update Instructions Note For HP branding purposes, the URL for the RIP has changed to where [hostname] is the name of your computer. The software updater will delete the kodiak folder on your computer, and create a new one called hp-ripsw. Any bookmarks or shortcuts will need to point to this new folder. 1. Exit any software programs that are running on the server workstation. 2. Disable anti-virus software as recommended by the manufacturer, and re-enable it after the RIP installation process is complete. Some anti-virus software may prevent the RIP from being properly installed. You can update the RIP in either of two ways: Internet update with downloaded setup.exe file Local update from DVD-ROM Note After updating the software, delete all temporary Internet files from your Internet browser cache and the Java control panel. 3. Click the link Check for updates in the RIP interface (on the computer that is actually running the RIP, not a remote workstation connected over a network). This causes the software to check for the latest version of the software stored on the HP web site, and compare it to the version currently installed. If an update is available, the software will ask whether you want to perform the update. Follow the instructions onscreen to complete the update. 4. Locate the setup.exe (installer) file you downloaded from the HP web site, or insert the DVD-ROM into the computer s disc drive and open the root folder of the drive. The file name may include the version number of the software, for example: setup_ exe. 5. Double-click the setup.exe file icon. The installer displays two informational messages: The VideoNet protocol must be installed. The Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) must be installed and configured. For automatic configuration, install IIS before running the RIP installer. If you are updating the software, these components have already been installed. There is no need to install them again. 6. Follow the prompts to complete the installation of the software. 7. Restart (reboot) the computer. The installer places its system tray icon in the Windows Startup group. An X will appear over the icon until you start the RIP. After the X over the icon disappears, it will take a few moments for the user interface to initialize and fully reflect each of the components in the RIP. The initialization speed will depend on any other activity on the computer or pending in the RIP Revision F 2

3 Note Leave page filing (swap file) on. This is an advanced virtual memory setting that is enabled by default. Turning off page filing will significantly slow the performance of the RIP. Relicense After you restart the RIP following a software update, you may need to relicense the software. 8. If prompted by the RIP, locate and write down the Host ID, located in the Licensing pane of the RIP home page. The Host ID number is a series of numbers and letters, as shown in the Licensing pane of the RIP home page. 9. Locate and write down the serial number of your printer, which is located on the silver label on the printer. 10.Locate and write down the HP invoice number for your printer. 11.Request a license key from HP Customer Service at or , OR via at cs.swlicense@hp.com, OR register online at: by clicking the Request a license button in the Licensing pane. If you supply the RIP Host ID, printer serial number, and invoice number, the license key file is sent to you as an e- mail attachment. 12.When you receive the license key, copy it to the folder on the RIP computer, c:\program files\kodiak\ The file must be named kodiak.lic. If your software renames the file when you copy the attachment to the RIP computer, rename it back to kodiak.lic. 13.Restart the RIP. Your new license is shown in the Licensing pane. Note After licensing your RIP, to remove the watermark on print jobs created by an unlicensed RIP, re- RIP the job. This can be done by changing the sizing method, size, or resolution Revision F 3

4 Version 1.5 NEW Support for the HP Scitex FB950 Printer. NEW Queue subfolders subfolders can be added to output queues by right clicking a queue in the tree pane and specifying a file name, similar to how they are created in Windows Explorer. For instructions, refer to the online help or User Guide page 2-3. NEW Job archiving print jobs can be saved to an external file and copied to removeable media for archiving or transfer to another HP RIP Software server. For instructions, refer to the online help or User Guide page 2-6. Various imrpovements to the color profile creation process. Version 1.4 Hewlett-Packard branding this version has been rebranded to reflect the acquisition of ColorSpan by Hewlett- Packard Company on November 1, NEW Backlit profiles this version adds the capability to create custom backlit profiles. NEW Media Saver features the Media Saver editing feature adds rulers and guides for more precise positioning of component jobs. NEW Check for updates the software now automatically checks for an updated version whenever the RIP home page is displayed or refreshed in the web browser (Internet connection required). Improved color profiles this version includes improved color profiles. If you are updating a current installation of the RIP, your current profiles and calibrations are left unchanged. To use the new profiles, they must be manually selected and calibrated. Speed and stability various improvements in speed and stability are included. Updated Help and User Guide the RIP help system and User Guide have been revised to be current with this version of the RIP software. Note to Version 1.3 Users Version 1.4 implements a change in how the HP RIP Software decides which dot gain data to use. The issue of which default dot gain file you have installed is important only until you calibrate the printer. Calibrating the printer renders this a moot issue; in that case, the new calibration data is used. The version 1.3 algorithm was: Check the printer dot gain file: If there is calibration data present, use it. If there is not, use the default data from the printer's dot gain file. If neither are present, use the data in the ICC profile. Version 1.4 eliminates the middle step. The version 1.4 algorithm is: Revision F 4

5 Check the printer dot gain file: If there is calibrated data in the printer dot gain file, use it. If not, use the data in the ICC profile. Two batch files are included with this version to enable you to switch between these two methods. use_13.bat replaces the default version 1.4 dot gain files with version 1.3 dot gain files. These "legacy" (version 1.3) dot gain files have been modifed slightly to ensure the data in them is always used by HP RIP Software version 1.4. The default data within them has been moved to the "calibrated" section, which ensures that the HP RIP Software sees it as new data. After running the batch file, the calibration date for all media will be shown as January 30th, use_14.bat restores the version 1.4 default dot gain files. Version 1.3 NEW 3M Matched Component System (MCS ) option this version supports 3M ink and graphic media for the ColorSpan 5400UV Series printers. NEW Microsoft Windows Vista support this version can be installed on the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, and supports print jobs sent from Windows Vista client workstations. NEW DisplayMaker support this version supports printing with color profiles for the DisplayMaker UVR, UVX, and SI printer products. NEW Color profile creation now supports the onboard camera you can now create and linearize color profiles using only the onboard photodiode ( camera ), without an external spectrophotometer device (except profiles for 3M inks, which must be created with an external device.) When profiling sheet-fed media with the camera, it will be necessary to change sheets during the profile creation process. See the control panel for instructions. Typically, two 48x48 inch sheets are needed for the ColorSpan 9840UV, and up to three sheets for the 5400UV Series, including the ink limit and verification prints. Various user interface and performance improvements have been made, including a new print preview window. The Help option has been removed from the Kodiak system tray icon menu. The color profile editing function has been removed from the RIP. It will be reintroduced in a future version. In the Linearization tab of ColorMark+, curve editing has been removed. The Reset one and Reset all buttons have been removed from the user interface. When reading color patches in ColorMark+, the Cancel button has been disabled. Tip: On the computer running the RIP, you can display the interface by entering the URL as: This has the benefit of keeping the RIP running even if the connection to the local area network (DNS server) is disrupted Revision F 5

6 Version 1.2 NEW Profile creation method this version uses color data rather than reflectance data. This results in more accurate color profiles; however, this version is not compatible with the factory profiles created prior to version 1.2. This version includes a complete set of color profiles to replace the profiles used with previous versions. NEW Color profile creation this version enables you to create custom color profiles for the media of your choice. This procedure is explained in the online help and in the Kodiak User Guide (part number Revision C). This optional feature is available if enabled by your software license from ColorSpan. NEW Right-click items in the tree pane when you left-click (to select) then right-click a print job in the tree pane, a menu appears that allows you to move, copy, RIP/print now, delete, or pause the job. NEW Drag-and-drop support from Windows Explorer from the computer that is running the RIP (not a remote computer over the network), you can now use the mouse to drag print jobs into a Hot Folder port in the tree pane. NEW Scaling of PostScript (PS) and Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files PostScript language (PS) files and single-page Adobe Acrobat documents can now be scaled, cropped, and tiled as described in the Crop/Size section of Chapter 2, Kodiak User Guide. The PS or PDF file must be copied to a Hot Folder with the Default sizing method for downloaded images setting set to Manual. After reaching the RIP, the file will be RIPed to create a preview image before it can be manipulated. EPS, TIFF, and JPEG files can also be scaled, cropped, and tiled as before. (Multi-page PDF and PS files cannot be scaled and will RIP unscaled.) The scaling function is designed for use with application-generated (valid) PostScript language files. Hand-coded PostScript files may not scale as expected. Do not attempt to scale the sample PostScript files included with the RIP (such as the TRUMATCH swatch pages). PostScript files generated by the ColorSpan Image Utility are incompatible with the scaling in the RIP; these files will fail with a PostScript error. Users should perform cropping and scaling operations in the RIP or CSIU, not both. Supported printers (printers supported may vary with software license) ColorSpan 9840uv (Kodiak 9840 edition only), ColorSpan 5400 Series. Verification ramps the rows in the ColorMark+ verification ramps are labeled with numbers instead of the colors used. The numbers correspond to the colors used in the ramps as follows: 1=C, 2=M, 3=Y, 4=K, 5=M+Y, 6=Y+C, 7=C+M, 8=CMY, 9=CMYK. Verification ramps Revision F 6

7 Version 1.1 Batch operations you can now move, copy, pause/resume and delete a selection of multiple jobs, rather than just one job at a time. Media Saver performance of Media Saver jobs in queues has been improved. Deleting one or more component jobs of a Media Saver job will not affect the Media Saver job (it can still be printed). Multi-Sheet N-UP improvements (ColorSpan 9840UV) see the printer Release Notes (part number ) for details. These features require the version 2.24 or later of the ColorSpan 9840UV printer embedded software and the version 1.1 RIP software. Re-RIPed jobs when you re-rip a job, a copy of the job is created in the input queue. The copy will have (rerip) appended to its name. The original job is left where it was. User interface changes New button bar below the detail pane. The standard buttons always appear there: Submit, Cancel, Help, Pause. If there is a panel-specific button, it will be in the middle: Initialize, Add Filter, Rescan. Various performance improvements have been implemented. Java Runtime settings Java Settings, on page 1-4 of the Revision A User Guide (part number ), recommended configuring Java memory settings in the Windows Control Panel applet for Java. These settings should be applied only if you notice slow RIP performance with large numbers of print jobs; even in this case, try using 128 or 256 instead of 512 as was previously recommended. Configuring these settings is not recommended at all if you are using Internet Explorer 7, since doing so could prevent the RIP interface from running. ColorMark+ shadow range after entering a shadow range number, press the Enter key on your computer keyboard; otherwise, your entry is discarded during the color profile generation process. Version 1.0 Do not use the URL localhost when launching the RIP interface in a web browser, use the computer name or the computer s IP address. See Remote Console on page 1-24 of the User Guide (part number ) for instructions. The Start Kodiak Automatically option in the Kodiak tray icon menu is disabled until a future version of the software. Avoid large numbers of print jobs in queues, which slows the visible performance of the browser view of the RIP. Creating Media Saver jobs and copying jobs are computer resource-intensive. Avoid performing these actions while printing. The default Media Saver job width (width of the media loaded on the printer) may not match the width saved in the previously-saved Media Saver job. In this case, the width saved in the Media Saver job will be used. Creating a Media Saver job with a gutter of 0 (zero) will result in an error. Always use a gutter value of greater than zero. Ensure that all print jobs are complete before shutting down the RIP. Any jobs ripping or printing when you shut down the RIP will be deleted Revision F 7

8 New browser window from the browser that is displaying the RIP, if you launch a new window from the browser s File menu (Ctrl-N in Internet Explorer and Firefox), or browse to another site in the original window and then return to the RIP, the RIP will apparently stop responding. If this happens, refresh the browser window (press F5 in Internet Explorer and Firefox). Otherwise, avoid refreshing the RIP browser. It may cause inaccuracies in the information displayed. To change the name of a Hot Folder, click the port listing in the tree view, then change the name in the General tab of the Port Properties screen. Add, delete, and rename Hot Folders from within the RIP browser, rather than using operating system commands. Creating subfolders within a Hot Folder is not supported. The ICC workflow is not completely compatible with printing from an application via WinLink ports. Use Hot Folders instead. Clicking on the Java Memory field on the sever information page will attempt to free unused memory. The uninstallation procedure may not delete some files, folders, and printers. After running the uninstaller, manually delete these items Revision F 8
