Overview This guide will take you through the steps to upgrade a PointFire 2013 v1.0 installation to PointFire 2016 v1.0 on your SharePoint 2013 Web Front End server. This guide will assume that you want to use English and French on your English based server installation. If you wish to use more languages, simply repeat any steps involving languages for each added language. If you are looking to install a new PointFire 2016 v1.0, please refer to the PointFire 2016 v1.0 Installation Guide for instructions. If you experience any issues with your upgrade, feel free to contact our support team by submitting a ticket on our support Summary of Components to Upgrade Depending on what steps you use to upgrade your SharePoint sites from 2013 to 2016, it may migrate some PointFire 2013 components. If the component is compatible that is good, but otherwise some actions are required to avoid the migration of an incompatible component. This is summarized below in case you cannot follow all the steps in this guide Component 2016 Component Migrated? Compatible? PointFire 2016 v1.0 is a major software revision and should not be installed without prudent planning as you might a typical minor software update. Our support teams are ready to assist you with any and all problems or questions you may have or encounter. STEP ONE NOTE CURRENT CONFIGURATION SETTINGS The migration of SharePoint 2013 to SharePoint 2016 does not preserve the values of application-level settings contained in the web application s web.config files, although it does preserve site collection level and site level settings if they have broken inheritance. Note the current values of the PointFire keys in the web.config file. STEP TWO MIGRATE SHAREPOINT 2013 DATABASE TO SHAREPOINT 2016 ENVIRONMENT SharePoint 2016 supports content database migration from the SharePoint 2013 SP1 environment into the SP 2016 environment. You don t need to retract the PointFire solution or language packs prior to this migration. You presumably have a migration plan for the content databases. If not, one possible sequence of steps for doing this is described in Appendix A Note: Service Pack1 should have installed in SharePoint 2013 environments prior to content database migration. STEP THREE DOWNLOAD & INSTALL SHAREPOINT LANGUAGE PACKS At this point you should download and install the desired SharePoint 2016 language packs. P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 2
Notes: You will need to run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard after each language pack you install. Language pack installation is in the language of the language pack. If the download and installation take place with an English interface, then you are installing the English language pack. You do not need a language pack for the SharePoint base language. Language packs for SharePoint Foundation are different from those for SharePoint Server etc. Language Packs have Service Packs. STEP FOUR DOWNLOAD & INSTALL POINTFIRE LANGUAGE PACKS PointFire 2016 Language packs are available for most languages, and are now optional In PointFire 2016, PointFire language packs are now optional and most of the user interface is translated with internal language resources. However, coverage of the user interface is more complete when language packs are installed. Next, you will need to download and install the PointFire 2016 Language Packs you plan to use. Uncompress the zip file and run the LanguagePack.ps1 file to install the language pack. Repeat this step for each language pack. Language Packs: P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 3
STEP FIVE DOWNLOAD & INSTALL POINTFIRE At this point you want to run the PointFire2016.exe to begin installing PointFire. Follow the on screen instructions. Download: P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 4
Once completed you have the option to run the deployment script and to view the readme. You should ensure you run the deployment script. Check the readme file for details about the current version s deployment options and scripts. There are currently two options for deployment: P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 5
1) Use the PointFire Deployment Manager (PFConfig) This is the simplest solution in most cases. It will let you edit the configuration and deploy the solution and configuration across the farm to selected web applications. See details below. 2) Use the install.bat PowerShell installation This batch file launches a PowerShell script that will deploy PointFire on all web applications. You can edit this script to suit your needs. Please note that it is a signed script and any modification will invalidate the code signature and may require different PowerShell execution policies to run. STEP SIX WEB.CONFIG SETTINGS The PointFire Deployment Manager (PFConfig, formerly known as PointFire Configuration Manager) will automatically make required changes to configurations, let you adjust the application settings, and then let you deploy the solution and settings that you want across the farm. These settings should be based on the ones that you noted in step one. In particular, you need to check that the list of languages is the one that you want, and you need to determine whether to allow site settings to override application settings. PFConfig also has the option to upgrade or retract an existing PointFire solution. It automatically detects whether the solution is already deployed, whether it requires an upgrade, and whether the required administration and timer services are running. If in the future you wish to change these application settings, use the PFConfig tool to retract the PointFire solution, and then use it again to change the configuration keys and redeploy the solution. None of your content nor site-specific settings should change when the solution is retracted and redeployed, but the application-level settings will be the ones that you set. PFConfig provides a graphical interface for setting PointFire configuration keys that will be deployed across the farm. Alternatively, you can change the values of the configuration keys that will be deployed by editing the file P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 6
named configkeys.xml in the PointFire 2016 directory. Please note that the PFConfig Deployment tool sometimes does but does not necessarily remember what settings were used previously. When you use it, note down the previous versions of the keys, either from the appropriate web.config file prior to retraction, or from the PFInstall-xxxx.txt files that are placed in the PointFire 2016 directory. These files also record whether any of your configuration keys were invalid and disregarded, and other information about deployment. Note: PFConfig will override any changes to settings that you may have made directly by editing web.config files, including license keys. P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 7
When initially run, PFConfig will only provide the option to deploy PointFire. You will be given the option of which applications on your farm to deploy it to. On subsequent runs, the option to retract or upgrade PointFire will be given depending on what version is already installed. STEP SEVEN - PERFORM SHAREPOINT SITE COLLECTION UPGRADE There are at least one way to perform site collection upgrade, and you will need to develop a strategy for upgrading. Site Collection Level Upgrade into SP 2016 Mode Please follow the steps below to upgrade a specific site collection Before going for Site Collection Upgrade, you can check the site collection pre-upgrade health checks to examine a site collection and list potential upgrade issues, such as missing or unsupported elements. After you run the checks, a report lists potential issues. The report also has information about how to address the issues. To run the Site Collect health check, navigate to the site setting and click on the Site collection health checks P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 8
Then click on the Start checks SharePoint will generate and display the reports such as this one. P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 9
If there are no critical issues then start the Site Collection Upgrade 1. Navigate to the Site Setting of the Site Collection 2. Click on the Site Collection Upgrade from the Site Collection Administration 3. The following screen will appear. Click on the Upgrade this Site Collection (alternatively, you can click on Try a demo upgrade to create a temporary copy of the site collection that will be queued for an upgrade but that will be deleted after evaluation.) P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 10
4. Please wait till the processing finishes 5. Now you will see your Upgrade result. You can either click on What s New or you can visit the sp 2016 version site from Let s see the new site link P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 11
If desired, migrate your authentication method at this point. STEP EIGHT - ACTIVATE POINTFIRE FEATURE If the feature is not already activated on your site(s), ensure you do so now from the Site Features section of the Site Settings page. STEP NINE FINAL INSPECTION If PFAutoUpgradeFilter is set to TRUE, any language filter web parts that were present in PointFire will be automatically upgraded to the 2016 version and re-connected to the list web part when the page containing it is first loaded. You should inspect complex pages, those that contain one or more language filter web parts, or more than one list or web parts to ensure that it has been done correctly. When all language filter web parts have been converted, set PFAutoUpgradeFilter to FALSE. If you use PointFire SDK tags, set PFSDKCompatibility to TRUE in the web.config if you have not yet changed the tag prefix from pf2k7 to pointfire. If your migrated site settings include a custom top level URL that points to the old 2013 environment, this needs to be updated as PointFire will attempt to load the url that is not supported and fail on each request. TROUBLESHOOTING If you are experiencing issues getting PointFire functioning correctly, please look to the following troubleshooting tips. 1. I ve installed language packs but the language is not shown in the Language Choice menu. a. You may be missing the value from your web.config or have not set the multilingual site settings to TRUE for the language you are missing. b. You may also need to activate the Language in SharePoint from the Language settings page found in Site Settings. This should be done automatically by PointFire, but if you did not specify the language in web.config and/or site settings this may not occur. 2. I am seeing errors where the language filter is located or content that used to be filtered is no longer filtered. a. You need to set PFAutoUpgradeFilter to TRUE in the web.config. b. If the filter is still not upgraded then you can delete the old filter and add the new one from the web part gallery. You will need to reconnect the filter to the other web parts if it is not done automatically. 3. My custom SDK tags are not working. a. You can either set PFSDKCompatibility to TRUE in the web.config or; b. You can change the tag prefix from pf2k7 to pointfire. 4. Language Filter Web Parts are throwing errors. P O I N T F I R E 2016 v 1. 0 U P G R A D E G U I D E Page 12
a. You should set PFAutoUpgradeFilter to TRUE in your web.config. Once you feel your filters have been updated you should plan to set this back to FALSE. b. You may need to remove the old web parts and add the new ones. 5. I have Language Version fields that are not functioning correctly. a. PointFire 2013 no longer provides the backwards compatibility that PointFire 2010 v1.0 did. You will need to update these fields. You should either rename them manually or delete the old ones and re-add the new ones. If you are experiencing any issues with your upgrade, please submit a ticket on our site: For further information about using PointFire 2016 v1.0, please refer to the PointFire 2016 v1.0 User Guide. For further information about PointFire 2016 v1.0 Administration, please refer to the PointFire 2016 v1.0 Administrators Guide.
