5 Preface This guide is intended for system administrators who are using Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) software from Microsoft with SPECTRUM. What is in this book This guide contains the following chapters: Chapter 1: Modeling MOM Components introduces SPECTRUM/MOM integration and explains how to model Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) components in your network with SPECTRUM. Also explains how to configure alert forwarding for the SPECTRUM/MOM integration. Chapter 2: Launching MOM Web Console explains how to launch the MOM Web Console from the OneClick Console. Chapter 3: Supported SPECTRUM Events shows the SPECTRUM events that are generated based on alerts received from MOM-managed hosts. 8 Chapter 1: Modeling MOM Components Overview of the SPECTRUM/MOM Connector The SPECTRUM/MOM Connector is an application that synchronizes alarm data between SPECTRUM and Microsoft Operation Manager. The SPECTRUM/MOM Connector uses SPECTRUM's SSORB CORBA API to interface with SPECTRUM and MOM Connector Framework (MCF) to interface with MOM. You can monitor and respond to MOM-generated alert conditions by generating SPECTRUM events and alarms. You can also monitor the status of the MOM agents managed by the MOM application using SPECTRUM. The SPECTRUM/MOM Connector provides the following: Creates new SPECTRUM alarms as a result of alerts being generated in MOM Clears SPECTRUM alarms when the resolution state of the corresponding MOM alert is set to Resolved (and vice versa) Acknowledges SPECTRUM alarm when the resolution state of the corresponding MOM alert is set to Acknowledged Figure 1-1 on page 9 illustrates the SPECTRUM/MOM architecture. Key Terms The following terms are key to understanding SPECTRUM/MOM: Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) provides real-time events and alerts on the performance of Microsoft Windows servers and applications in your network. SPECTRUM/MOM Connector an application that synchronizes alarm data between SPECTRUM and Microsoft Operation Manager. The MOM Connector uses SPECTRUM's SSORB CORBA API to interface with SPECTRUM. It uses MOM Connector Framework to interface with Microsoft Operations Manager. MOM Host Server responsible for management tasks, such as event-based alert generation. MOM Agent installed agent software that resides on a system managed by MOM. A MOM Agent collects system events and statistics. SPECTRUM Event an event that is generated based on alerts received from MOM-managed hosts. SPECTRUM Alarm Manager provides a list of current network alarms and lets you manage alarms in a non-distributed environment (composed of a single landscape managed by a single SpectroSERVER). 8 Microsoft Operations Manager Integration Guide
9 Adding the MOM Connector Framework Path Figure 1-1: SPECTRUM/MOM Architecture Adding the MOM Connector Framework Path You must add the MOM Connector Framework path to the PATH environment variable. Prerequisites.NET Framework, Version 1 with Service Pack 1 or greater installed on the MOM Server Host Procedure To add the MOM Connector Framework path: 1. Open Windows Control Panel. 2. Double click on the System icon. 3. Click on the Advanced tab in the System Properties dialog box. 4. Click the Environment Variables button. 5. Edit the Path variable in the System variables table. 6. Add the.net framework path to the end of the value and click OK to save your changes. Microsoft Operations Manager Integration Guide 9
10 Chapter 1: Modeling MOM Components Installing the SPECTRUM/MOM Connector Procedure To install the SPECTRUM/MOM Connector: 1. Copy the $SPECROOT/MOMConnector directory to the MOM Server Host. NOTE: Once you install the SPECTRUM MOM Connector on the MOM Server Host, you cannot move the directory. Be sure to select a destination directory that does not need to be moved. For example: C:\Program Files\MOMConnector. 2. On the MOM Server Host, rename the file named momrc.example to.momrc. 3. Open the.momrc file with a text editor. 4. Change the sshost entry to the name of the SpectroSERVER Host. For example, sshost=mom Execute the following command from the MOMConnector directory on the MOM Server Host: SpectrumMomConnector.exe --install This command sets up the required registry entries used by the SPECTRUM/MOM Connector. It also installs the SPECTRUM/MOM Connector as a Windows Service. 6. Open Control Panel and select Administrative Tools > Services and double click the Spectrum MOM Connector" service. 7. Click the Logon tab and click This Account. 8. Choose a user account. For example, Administrator. The user you select must be a valid SPECTRUM user. 9. Enter and confirm the password for the account. 10. Click OK to accept your changes. MOM Host Server and SpectroServer on Different Subnets If your MOM Host Server and SpectroSERVER are located on different subnets, you must create the OSAGENT_ADDR environment variable on the MOM Host Server. Procedure To create the OSAGENT_ADDR environment variable: 1. From the Windows Control Panel, click on System. The System Properties dialog box appears. 2. In the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables button. The Environment Variables dialog box appears. 3. Click the New... button under the System variables group and enter OSAGENT_ADDR in the Variable name field. 4. Enter the IP address of the SpectroServer in the Variable value field and click OK. 5. Click OK in the Environment Variables dialog box and the System Properties dialog box. 10 Microsoft Operations Manager Integration Guide
11 Installing the SPECTRUM/MOM Connector Changing the OSAGENT_PORT By default, SPECTRUM uses as the OSAGENT_PORT. If you need to change this port, follow this procedure. Procedure To change the OSAGENT_PORT: 1. From the Windows Control Panel, open System. The System Properties dialog box appears. 2. On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables button. The Environment Variables dialog box appears. 3. Click the New... button under the System variables group and enter OSAGENT_PORT in the Variable name field. 4. Enter the port number in the Variable value field (for example, 14010) and click OK. 5. Click OK in the Environment Variables dialog box and the System Properties dialog box. Adding the MOM Host Server to the Host Security on SpectroSERVER Procedure To add the MOM Host Server to the the host security on SpectroSERVER: 1. Open the SPECTRUM Control Panel. 2. 12 Chapter 1: Modeling MOM Components 3. Enter the MOM Host Server name in the text box under Server List. 4. Click Add to add the MOM Host Server name to the Server List. 5. Click OK to accept your changes and exit the Host Security dialog box. Running the SPECTRUM/MOM Connector Procedure To run the SPECTRUM MOM Connector: 1. Open Control Panel and select Administrative Tools > Services and select the "Spectrum MOM connector" service. 2. Start the service by selecting Start from the Action menu. Verifying that SPECTRUM/MOM is Running Procedure To verify that SPECTRUM/MOM Connector is running properly: 1. Open the MOM Administrator Console. 2. From the tree in the left pane, click Console Root > Microsoft Operations Manager (hostname) > Administration > Product Connectors. SPECTRUM_Connector should be displayed in the right pane. Configuring MOM Event Rules for Alert Forwarding An Event Rule specifies how a condition must be met for MOM to generate alerts to the SPECTRUM/ MOM Connector. If the condition is met an alert is generated. NOTE: See MOM documentation at for additional information on creating event processing rules that generate alerts. Procedure To create a new event rule: 1. From the tree in the left pane, go to Console Root > Microsoft Operations Manager (hostname) > Management Packs > Rule Groups > Microsoft Operations Manager > Operations Manager 2005 > Agent > Event Rules. 2. Right click on Event Rules and select Create Event Rule... The Select Event Rule Type dialog box appears (Figure 1-3). 12 Microsoft Operations Manager Integration Guide

The Event Rules Properties - Event Provider dialog box appears. 4. Select System from the listbox as the data provider and click Next. The Event Rules Properties - Criteria dialog box appears. 5. Click Next to proceed. The Event Rules Properties - Schedule dialog box appears. 6. Click Next to proceed. The Event Rules Properties - Event Provider dialog box appears. 7. Click Next to proceed. The Event Rules Properties - Alert dialog box appears (Figure 1-4). Microsoft Operations Manager Integration Guide 13
14 Chapter 1: Modeling MOM Components Figure 1-4: Event Rule Properties Dialog Box 8. Click the Generate alert checkbox. 9. Select SPECTRUM_Connector from the Resolution state listbox. 10. Click the Custom Fields... button. The Custom Fields dialog box appears (Figure 1-5 on page 15). 11. Set CustomField1 to Source Computer by clicking the right-arrow button and selecting it from the list. When MOM alerts are sent from the MOM Host Server, SPECTRUM uses the value of CustomField1 to map alerts to the correct device model. NOTE: For MOM 2000, you must set the value of CustomField1 to $AGENT$. 14 Microsoft Operations Manager Integration Guide
15 Configuring MOM Event Rules for Alert Forwarding Figure 1-5: Custom Fields Dialog Box 12. Click OK in the Custom Fields dialog box and then click next in the Alert dialog box. The Event Rule Properties - Alert Suppression dialog box appears. 13. Uncheck the Suppress duplicate alerts checkbox and click Next. The Responses dialog box appears. 14. Click Next to proceed. The Event Rule Properties - Knowledge Base dialog box appears. 15. Click Next to proceed. The Event Rule Properties - General dialog box appears. 16. Enter a name for the event rule in the Rule Name field and click Finish. NOTE: You might not see alerts being forwarded to SPECTRUM immediately as MOM takes time to update. 16 Chapter 1: Modeling MOM Components Creating Models for MOM Agents This section explains how to create models to represent each of the MOM agent hosts on your network. To model a MOM agent, use the Create Model by IP option. SPECTRUM selects the host device model type that most accurately represents each MOM agent. Procedure To create models for MOM Agents on the OneClick Console: 1. Click the Topology tab. 2. Click the Create a new model by IP icon in the toolbar. The Create Model by IP Address dialog box appears (Figure 1-6): Figure 1-6: Create Model By IP Address 3. Enter the Network Address, Community Name, and Agent Port for SPECTRUM to use to communicate with MOM agents. 4. Click OK and SPECTRUM creates a model that accurately represents the host device with the specified IP address. 5. Exit out of edit mode by choosing File > Close Edit after the model is created. 6. Right-click on the SPECTRUM model and choose Model Information. 7. Change the value of the Model Name box to be the host name of the MOM agent host in the Model Information view. This value is case-insensitive. The SPECTRUM/MOM Connector uses 16 Microsoft Operations Manager Integration Guide
17 Viewing SPECTRUM/MOM Alarms one of the custom fields in the MOM alert to identify which model should receive the SPECTRUM event that is generated. 8. Choose File > Save All Changes and then File > Close. 9. Repeat steps step 1 through step 8 for each MOM agent host on your network. Viewing SPECTRUM/MOM Alarms When the MOM Connector receives alerts, it generates events based on the content of the alert. SPECTRUM then determines whether or not to generate an alarm. After an alarm is generated, right-click on the device model and select Alarm Details. You can view the cause of the alarm and the events that generated the alarm in the Alarm Details tab. 20 Chapter 2: Launching MOM Web Console Launching MOM Web Console from the OneClick Console The SPECTRUM/MOM integration lets you launch the MOM Web Console from the OneClick Console. See Changing the Web Context URL in OneClick on page 21. Procedure 1. Select any SPECTRUM model which has a MOM-based alarm associated with it. 2. Select the Alarms tab in the Contents pane. 3. Select the Alarm Details tab in the Component Detail pane. 4. Click on the hyperlink associated with the Web Context URL box at the bottom of the window to display alarm details (Figure 2-1). 21 Changing the Web Context URL in OneClick Changing the Web Context URL in OneClick This procedure requires that you have a working knowledge of XML and HTML. Procedure 1. In the OneClick installation directory (the default is C:\win32app\SPECTRUM), go to: WebApps\tomcat\webapps\spectrum\WEB-INF\alarm\config 2. Open this file for editing: column-alarmwebcontexturl-config.xml 3. Modify the text between the <html> and </html> tags to display an alternate hyperlink in OneClick. For example, replacing the existing text displays a hyperlink in OneClick, which reads Launch MOM Web Console. Replace this text: "<html>click <a href='" + (String)value() + "'>here</a> to launch</html>" With the following text: "<html><a href='" + (String)value() + "'>Launch MOM Web Console</a></html>" Microsoft Operations Manager Integration Guide 21

24 Chapter 3: Supported SPECTRUM Events SPECTRUM Events Table 3-1 shows the SPECTRUM events that are generated based on alerts received from MOMmanaged entities. The columns present the following information: SPECTRUM Event the SPECTRUM event created based on a Microsoft Operations Manager alert. Event Code the SPECTRUM event code for the event. Event Action the processing that is performed on the event based on the instructions in the event disposition file. For example, raise an alarm, clear an alarm, or check for a frequent problem. Alarm Code the alarm code generated or cleared by the event. Alarm Severity the severity of the alarm generated.
