Project: Revision: 5 Page 6 of INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose This document announces and records the releases of the (Vehicle Electronic Programming Station) Configuration Utility. is a programming setup that lets the user customize and calibrate the components for the vehicle. Cummins provide the configuration utility to let the OEM customize the controllers as per needs and capability. 1.2 Document Conventions Not Applicable
Project: Revision: 5 Page 7 of Version Description 2.1 Version Highlights: Added support for two new engine features (see below). Added support to allow password information to alternatively be passed through the command line. Refer to the VCP User Guide for usage. Generating the OEM Programming Reference Manual more accurately represents the set of parameters and options available within the connected ECM. Added ECM Calibration Version and ECM Bootloader Version to report header and user-generated OEM Programming Reference Manual. Refer to the VCP User Guide for how this affects version compatibility. Write Verification (2007 and later engines) rewritten to work as originally intended. Added support for Auto Baud rate detection via RP1210. Common Components communication library deployed in a registration-free side-by-side activation. New Debug/Trace logging feature. Refer to the VCP User Guide for details regarding its usage. Added official support for Windows 8. New installer and additional software installation package/method (see below). Minor bug fixes Updates for all/specific engines: Added support for the following engine-specific features: Engine Brake Control Offset RPM Remote Start Control Relay Refer to your AE Support Team or AEBs to determine if these features are available to your engine program. PTO Pump Mode VSS Override (50421) modified to function as a feature (Y/N as opposed to 1/0). Added logic to determine which Load Based Speed Control Breakpoint Speed parameters (single vs. dual) to present to the OEM. Previously both were exposed which offered much confusion. Added support to allow password information to alternatively be passed through the command line. Refer to the VCP User Guide for the correct syntax and operation Notes Regarding New Installer and Additional Installation Method: Installer slimmed down to Basic MSI. Installation of the VCP using the installer is now optional (see below). The default/recommended install location has been changed to align with other Cummins software families. However, the user may opt to install the VCP to any location desired. New software installation method available to provide additional flexibility. The VCP is now provided by Cummins in two software packages: The usual Windows Installer (MSI) package (.exe) A loose file archive (.zip)
Project: Revision: 5 Page 8 of 15 A loose file archive is provided for easier deployment of the VCP in a tightly secured environment. Installation using the loose file archive is as simple as extracting all files & folder structure from the archive, running the VCP Configuration Utility, and invoking the VCP from the command line (per the usual). There are some caveats to this method compared to the typical Windows Installer: The VCP still needs write access to the CommonAppData path (i.e. %ProgramData%\Cummins\CumminsVCP\) for writing temporary files. If this path does not exist at run-time, the VCP will attempt to create this path. If this fails, execution of the VCP may abruptly halt. Typically this is not an issue with most Windows configurations. The VCP Configuration Utility must be launched manually. To do this, just simply double-click on the vcpconfig.cpl file and Windows will (generally) load the control panel applet for you. If either the VCPSetting.xml or VCP_Config.xml files are not write accessible (or present), the software will search for the files in the CommonAppData path. These files must be writable for the VCP to function correctly. This is typically not a problem unless the files are deployed to a secure location. While not every environment allows its users to install software, the Windows Installer is still the recommended installation method Bug Fixes: Implemented a workaround for 2013 ISX12/15 ECM software rejecting password changes in bulk Known Issues: None at this time. 2.2 Version Highlights This release primarily addresses content missing from the v release and, therefore, should be considered a minor update Updates for all/specific engines: Engine Start Stop Permit feature support added. Refer to your Application Engineering Support Team or AEBs (Application Engineering Bulletins) to determine if this feature is applicable to your Engine Program(s). ISX15 Euro4 CM2250 engine description updated to ISX15 Euro4/5 CM2250. Implemented a workaround for a specific OEM issue where programming certain multiplex parameters were failing to write to the ECM. The workaround only affects older modules using the DE and ECHO2 specifier (refer to the VCP User Guide for matching product specifiers) Known Issues: See v Known Issues.
Project: Revision: 5 Page 9 of Version Highlights Five new Engine programs supported (see below). Two new password domains supported to accommodate the 2013 Greenhouse Gas Emissions regulations. Better range checking routines for existing Driver Initiated Override Max Distance (30312) & Driver Initiated Override Max Road Speed Delta (30311) trims. Please refer to section below regarding calculating valid values for the Max Road Speed Delta. Please refer to sections and for other bug fixes or dependency changes that may affect your current setup. Contact your Application Engineering Support Team or refer to your AEBs (Application Engineering Bulletins) to get the list of new parameters supported in for your Engine Program New Engines Supported: Engine Program Setup Record ISLe 8.9L BS3 CM2880A ISLe 8.9L BS4 CM2880A ISDe 4.5/6.7L NS4 CM2880A ISC 8.3L NS4 CM2880A Rio CM2350A Table 1 - New Engine(s) Supported in v Updates for all/specific engines: Passwords governing two new Greenhouse Gas security domains are now supported. Minor updates to existing engine descriptions. Range checking routines involving Driver Initiated Override Max Distance (30312) & Driver Initiated Override Max Road Speed Delta (30311) have been either added or revised. This update results in better range checking by the programming software for the trims even for older engine programs. Please review section below for determining the valid range for Max Road Speed Delta (30311) Bug Fixes: In prior versions, the report file always reported units of measurement in English. In v8.0.04, the units shown in the report are based on the unit selection radio button in the VCP Control Panel. Refer to the User Guide for instructions on selecting Measurement Units. Fixed incorrect description of Battery Power Required Lamp Type (50498) - was previously described as PTO Parking Brake Interlock Type.
Project: Revision: 5 Page 10 of Notes Regarding Changes to Driver Initiated Override Max Speed Delta: With the introduction of the Greenhouse Gas Vehicle Speed Limiter feature in select Cummins 2013 engines, there now exists three potential methods of limiting the vehicle speed by the OEM. However, each speed limiting feature can optionally be manually overridden via a singular Driver Initiated Override feature. The purpose of this section is not to explain the relationship or function of these features, but to explain the changes made to the programming software to enforce better trimming of the features. If the Driver Initiated Override feature is enabled, the largest possible value of Maximum Road Speed Delta of Driver Initiated Override will be determined by the programming software based on feature availability and enable status. Please note the following figure: Driver Initiated Override Speed Road Speed Governor GHG VSL Default Speed Limit A Cruise Control Maximum Cruise Control Speed B Maximum Road Speed Greenhouse Gas Vehicle Speed Limiter Maximum Accelerator Vehicle Speed C Smallest range among A, B & C = Largest allowable value of Max Road Speed Delta Figure 1 Determining Trimmable Range for Driver Initiated Override Max Road Speed Delta In the above figure, each of the three speed limiting features impose an individual maximum speed limit that is customizable by the OEM - the maximum wall value being the Maximum Road Speed. The individual differences (colored yellow or A, B & C) represent the potential allowable range for the Maximum Road Speed Delta trim of the Driver Initiated Override. When trimming this delta value, the programming software will choose the smallest range (or difference representation) among A, B & C as the maximum allowable value the OEM can set. It is strongly suggested that prior to trimming Maximum Road Speed Delta, careful selection of the overall Maximum Road Speed as well as the respective feature dependent speed limits are made to avoid potential error messages after programming. The general formula for calculating a range of valid delta values (i.e. A, B or C) is: Maximum Road Speed Delta must be less than or equal to Maximum Road Speed minus the Feature Dependent Speed Limit. As the figure above demonstrates, the largest of the three vehicle speed limits will determine the maximum value that can be programmed into Maximum Road Speed Delta. Disabling (or unavailability) of a speed limiting feature will not impose its respective restriction on the Max Road Speed Delta value. Essentially, a disabled feature will drop out from the figure above. Conversely, disabling (or trimming the delta to zero) of the Driver Initiated Override feature will allow trimming each speed limiter the full range (up to Maximum Road Speed) Known Issues: Support for 500Kbps baud rate per J1939/14 SAE standard is not supported in at this time. Attempting to connect with ECMs supporting the higher bandwidth capacity has been demonstrated to fail as such. Support for 500Kbps is planned in future releases.
Project: Revision: 5 Page 11 of 15 On October 26, 2012, Microsoft released Windows 8 globally. While it is possible that may function correctly, installation and usage of any version including and prior to v is not fully supported under the new operating system at the release of this document. 2.4 Version Highlights 7 new Engine programs supported. It has been observed, that under certain circumstances, the ECM is not retaining the value of certain parameters like Low Idle Speed (10030) as set by. This phenomenon is caused when battery power is removed from the ECM before a complete ECM power down has completed after a session. To ensure all of the parameter settings are properly saved in the ECM after the sessions ends, the user needs to turn the key switch off and allow the ECM power down completely before battery power is removed from the ECM. Please see sections and for other bug fixes or dependency changes that may affect you current setup. Please contact your Application Engineering Support Team or refer to your AEBs(Application Engineering Bulletins) to get the list of new parameters supported in for your Engine Program New Engine Supported: Engine Program Setup Record Euro5 ISB 5.9L CM2880 Euro3 ISN 14L CM876 B5.9L, 6.7L, BS IV CM2880 Euro 5 ISF 3.8L CM2220C ISZ 13L Euro4 CM2150E ISX15 Euro4 CM2250 Sao Paulo CM2880 Table 2 - New Engine(s) Supported in v Updates for all/specific engines: OEM Programming Reference Manual Creation Guide.doc updated with latest screen shots using MSWord On ISM/ISX/Sig 600 Phase Engines (CM 570) Parameter was not programming correctly due to incorrect unit conversion Fixed. 12 Project: Revision: 5 Page 12 of Bug Fix: Cummins Automotive 07 engines and beyond: New Dependency added- if PTO Accelerator Override (21381) is disabled, users will not be able to program PTO Accelerator Override Maximum Engine Speed (11830). Updated the error description on setting PTO Maximum Speed (10130) and PTO Accelerator Override Maximum Engine Speed (11830) out of range. The description earlier was misleading. Cruise Control with Engine Brake Interaction dependency/rule has been changed. The only rule that applies to this feature now is: Start Max Engine Braking in Cruise Control(12410) > Start Min Engine Braking in Cruise Control(12420) 2.5 Version Highlights Six new Engine programs supported. Some users may now experience some errors when executing this new version of. Such as if the user's file enabled 15432, Idle Shutdown With Parking Brake Set, while 50005, Parking Brake Switch, was disabled, the new version of will now log an error informing the user that the Parking Brake Switch needs to be enabled in order for the Idle Shutdown With Parking Brake Set feature to work.
