Introduction 1.1 Purpose This document provides the system specifications for installing Microsoft Silverlight software and setting the appropriate browser settings for use with the Georgia Statewide Longitudinal System (SLDS). There are some settings that can be set on your internet browser to help optimize your user experience on the system. This document details how to configure those settings for use with SLDS. 2. Silverlight Silverlight is a Microsoft software product that is used in the SLDS application to provide the user with the option of adding or removing dashlets from their dashboard. The dashlets in the SLDS application are used to store information such as enrollment, attendance, assessment, etc. Silverlight is used to run some of the visualizations inside the SLDS application. Installation of Silverlight is required in order to print and view the Usage dashboard, Teacher Resource Link (TRL), and other potential enhancements to the SLDS application. Note: Installation of Silverlight is not required to view the existing Teacher, School, or District dashboards that are in production. 2.1 Installing Silverlight The following steps are required for installing Silverlight Verify your system requirements. 2. Download Silverlight For Windows Internet Explorer users: The browser will prompt you to either run or save the installation file (Silverlight.exe). Click Run to start the download. When the download is finished, the browser prompts you again to run the installer. Click Run to start the installation. Note that you must have sufficient administrative privileges to install Silverlight. 3. Install Silverlight If you are running the Windows Vista operating system, you will be prompted for security permissions. To continue, you need to approve. Click 'Install now' after reviewing the license agreement and privacy statement. If you have had a previous version of Silverlight installed, or are using Mozilla Firefox, you will need to restart your browser. You can now use Silverlight. 6/28/11 Page 4 of 14

5 4. Verify your installation. 2.2 Silverlight Compatible Operating Systems and Browsers The following operating systems and browsers are compatible with Silverlight. 3. Adjusting Browser Settings This section explains how to adjust your browser settings. These steps are required after you have installed Silverlight. 3.1 Identifying your browser version Determining your browser version and consulting the chart above will inform you of your compatibility with Microsoft Silverlight Internet Explorer (IE) Please perform the following steps to identify the Internet Explorer version currently installed on your computer. 6/28/11 Page 5 of 14

6 1. Open Internet Explorer 2. Click Help 3. Click About Internet Explorer Firefox Please perform the following steps to identify the Firefox version currently installed on your computer. 1. 7 3.1.3 Google Chrome Please perform the following steps to identify the Google Chrome version currently installed on your computer. 1. Open Google Chrome 2. Click the wrench icon on the browser toolbar. 3. Click About Google Chrome 4. This will bring up various information about Google Chrome, including the Google Chrome version. 6/28/11 Page 7 of 14

8 3.2 Allowing Trusted Sites Internet Explorer (IE) 1. Open the Internet Explorer browser 2. Click on the Tools menu 3. Click Internet Options 4. Click the Security tab 6/28/11 Page 8 of 14

9 5. Click on the Trusted sites icon 6. Click the Sites button 7. Enter into the Add this Web site to the zone field 8. Click the Add button 9. Uncheck the checkbox: Require server verification (https :) for all sites in this zone 10. Click OK 11. Click on the Trusted Sites web content zone (checkmark in green circle icon) 12. Click on Custom Level button 13. Scroll through the list to Downloads 14. Click Enable to set the prompt for Automatic Prompting 15. Click Enable to set the prompt for File download 16. Click Enable to set the prompt for Font download 17. Scroll through the list to Scripting 18. Click Enable to set the prompt for Active scripting 19. Click Enable to set the prompt to Allow paste operations via script 20. Click Enable to set the prompt for Scripting of Java applet 21. Click OK 6/28/11 Page 9 of 14

10 3.2.2 Firefox Adding Trusted sites is an Internet Explorer Feature. Mozilla Firefox and Safari users will not need to add Trusted sites. You get to specify not that a site is "trusted" but on a case by case basis exactly what extra privileges it will be allowed in the security settings. Instead, refer to the Step-by-Step Guide Pop-up Blockers Section to see how to allow pop-ups from specific sites Google Chrome 3.3 Pop-up Blockers Pop-up windows, or pop-ups, are windows that appear automatically without your permission. They vary in size but usually don't cover the whole screen. To allow pop-ups from the SLDS website application, perform the following steps: Internet Explorer (IE) To allow pop-ups from a trusted site in Internet Explorer: 1. Click on the Tools menu on the Internet Explorer Browser 2. Click on Pop-up Blocker (If it s grayed out, click on Turn on Pop-up Blocker first) 3. Select Allow Pop-up Windows from 4. Enter into the Address of Web site to allow field 5. Click the Add button 6. Select Medium: Block most automatic pop-ups from the Filter Level drop-down menu Firefox Firefox allows you to control both pop-ups and pop-unders through the Content panel in the Options window. Pop-up blocking is turned on by default, so you don't have to worry about enabling it to prevent pop-ups from appearing in Firefox. To allow pop-ups from a trusted site in Firefox: 1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP) and then click Options 2. Select the Content panel. 6/28/11 Page 10 of 14

11 In the content panel: Block pop-up windows: Uncheck this to disable the pop-up blocker altogether. Exceptions: This is a list of sites that you want to allow to display pop-ups. The dialog has the following choices: 6/28/11 Page 11 of 14

12 o o o Allow: Click this to add a website to the exceptions list. Remove Site: Click this to remove a website from the exceptions list. Remove All Sites: Click this to remove all of the websites in the exceptions list Google Chrome Google Chrome prevents pop-ups from automatically appearing and cluttering your screen. Whenever the browser blocks pop-ups for a site, the icon appears in the address bar. Click the icon to see the pop-ups that have been blocked or to manage pop-up settings for the site. You can allow all pop-ups by disabling the pop-up blocker. Follow these steps: 1. Click the wrench icon on the browser toolbar. 2. Select Options (Preferences on Mac and Linux; Settings on a Chromebook). 3. Click the Under the Hood tab. 4. Click Content settings in the "Privacy" section. 5. In the "Pop-ups" section, select "Allow all sites to show pop-ups." Customize permissions for specific websites by clicking Manage exceptions. 3.4 Clearing the Cache Internet Explorer (IE) 1. Click on the Tools menu 2. Click Internet Options 3. Select the General Tab. The following steps may vary depending upon which version of Internet Explorer (IE) you are using. Please follow the steps that pertain to your browser setting. 4. For IE6 version browsers: a. Click on the Delete Files button to clear the cache b. Click on the Delete Cookies button (Note: This may change settings on other websites using cookies that remember who you are) c. Click on the Clear History button d. Click OK 5. For IE8 version browsers: a. Click the Delete button b. Click on the Delete Cookies button (Note: This may change settings on other websites using cookies that remember who you are) c. Click on the Clear History button d. Click OK Firefox 1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP) and then click Options 2. Select the Privacy panel. 3. Click on the Remove Individual Cookies link 4. Select a cookie to be removed then click the Remove Cookie button to remove the individual cookie or 5. Select the Remove All Cookies to remove all cookies and clear the cache. 6/28/11 Page 13 of 14

14 3.4.3 Google Chrome 4. General Guidelines 4.1 Recommended resolution The recommended resolution for the SLDS application is 1024 x Printing All of the data contained in the SLDS dashboard is printable. The data is also exportable into many different formats. If you are experiencing problems printing, use the export feature to export the item into the format of your choice and then open or save the item to your desktop. Once the document has been exported you can print it directly from your workstation. 4.3 Back Button Do not use the browser back-button within the SLDS applications to navigate between pages. If you would like to navigate to a previous page with the SLDS application, click the little blue arrow in the report header or click one of the Quick Links. 4.4 Logging Out If a user wants to exit the application, the user must click the Logout button and completely exit the browser to end the current session. 6/28/11 Page 14 of 14
