Installing Cisco AVS Using the ESXi CLI or VMware VUM This appendix contains instructions for installing the Cisco Application Virtual Switch (AVS) with the ESXi CLI or VMware Virtual Update Manager (VUM). Once you have installed Cisco AVS and have added Cisco AVS hosts to the distributed virtual switch (DVS), you need to perform the tasks in Verifying the Cisco AVS Installation in this guide. When you choose a Cisco AVS VIB, you need to choose the one compatible with the version of VMware ESXi hypervisor that you use. ESX 5.1 uses xxxx vib, and ESX 5.5 uses xxxx vib. Installing the Cisco AVS Software Using the CLI, page 1 Installing the Cisco AVS Software Using VMware VUM, page 2 Adding Cisco AVS Hosts to the DVS, page 5 Installing the Cisco AVS Software Using the CLI You can install the Cisco AVS on the ESXi hypervisor with the CLI using a vsphere Installation Bundle (VIB). Open an ESXi CLI session to the ESXi hypervisor. Download the Cisco AVS VIB file from Cisco.com or the VMware portal. copy scp://filepath/file-name root@host:/tmp Copy the Cisco AVS VIB to the ESXi hypervisor. esxhost# copy scp://username@server/path/cisco-vem-v165-esx.vib root@host:/tmp esxcli software vib list grep cisco Locate the VIB on the ESXi hypervisor. 1
Installing the Cisco AVS Software Using VMware VUM Installing Cisco AVS Using the ESXi CLI or VMware VUM If there is an existing VIB file on the host, remove it by using the esxcli software remove command. esxhost# esxcli software vib list grep cisco cisco-vem-v164-esx Cisco PartnerSupported esxcli software vib install -v absolute path to the image Install the VIB on the ESXi hypervisor. esxhost# esxcli software vib install -v /tmp/cross_cisco-vem-v vib Installation Result Message: Operation finished successfully. Reboot Required: false VIBs Installed: cisco-vem-v164-esx_ VIBs Removed: VIBs Skipped: esxhost# At this point, you might see the following error message: [InstallationError] Error in running rm /tardisks/cisco_ve.v00: Return code: 1 Output: rm: can't remove '/tardisks/cisco_ve.v00': Device or resource busy It is not safe to continue. Please reboot the host immediately to discard the unfinished update. Please refer to the log file for more details. This message occurs if the host was already added to the Cisco AVS in the vcenter. The solution is to log in to VMware vsphere Web Client and in the vcenter remove the vmk1 under the distributed switch. vemcmd show version Displays the VIB version. esxhost# vemcmd show version Running esx version x86_64 VEM Version: VSM Version: System Version: VMware ESXi Releasebuild esxhost# Installing the Cisco AVS Software Using VMware VUM You can install the Cisco AVS on the VMware ESXi hypervisor using VMware VUM. Installing the Cisco AVS Software using VMware VUM requires four separate tasks: 1 Importing the Cisco AVS software to the VMware VUM patch repository 2 Adding the download package to a baseline 3 Staging and installing the VIB file 4 Verifying the VIB installation 2
Installing Cisco AVS Using the ESXi CLI or VMware VUM Importing the Cisco AVS Software to the VMware VUM Patch Repository To complete this procedure, you must have access to vsphere Client and have installed the VMware VUM plugin on the client. Importing the Cisco AVS Software to the VMware VUM Patch Repository Download the Cisco AVS VIB file from Cisco.com or the VMware portal. In vsphere Client, choose View > Solutions and Applications > Update Manager to open the VMware VUM GUI. Click the Patch Repository tab. Click Import Patches. In the Import Patches dialog box, click Browse to locate the Cisco AVS VIB file. Choose the.zip VIB file and click Open. Click Next to select the file. VMware VUM validates the file and displays the file type as Host Extension in the Type field. Click Finish to begin importing the VIB file into the VMware VUM patch repository. The VIB displays as a new patch in the Patch Repository tab. Adding the Package to a Baseline Step 9 In vsphere Web Client, click the Baselines and Groups tab. Click Create to create a new baseline. In the New Baseline dialog box, enter a name (such as aci-avs) and description for the new baseline (such as AVS VIB). In the Baseline Type field, choose Host Extension. Click Next. The new patch displays in the Repository field. Click the patch name and click the down arrow to add the patch to the Extensions to Add field. Click Next to add the extension. Click Finish to complete the baseline update. The new baseline displays under the Baselines and Groups tab. 3
Staging and Installing the VIB File Installing Cisco AVS Using the ESXi CLI or VMware VUM Staging and Installing the VIB File Step In vsphere Client, choose the new baseline (aci-avs) and click Compliance View. In the Compliance View, click Attach to attach a host to the baseline. In the Attach Baseline or Group dialog box, choose the new baseline (aci-avs) under Extension Baselines. Click Attach. The new baseline (aci-avs) displays in the Attached Baselines area. Choose the baseline and click Scan to view the compliance status of the host. In the Confirm Scan dialog box, make sure that the Patches and Extensions is selected, and then click Scan. The compliance status displays in the All Groups and Independent Baselines area. The host displays as noncompliant. The host is noncompliant because it is a new module. Click Details. In the Extension Details dialog box, confirm that the Compliance field shows New Module. Choose the baseline and click Stage. In the Stage Wizard dialog box, ensure that the baseline (aci-avs) is selected. Click Next. In the Patch and Extension Exclusion dialog box, click Next. The Ready to Complete window displays the hosts, baselines, and extensions on which to apply the patch. Click Finish. The Recent Tasks area shows the progress of the VIB download to the host. In the All Groups and Independent Baselines area, the host extension displays as (1 staged), indicating that staging is complete. Choose the host and click Remediate to complete the installation. In the Remediate dialog box, ensure that the baseline (aci-avs) is selected and click Next. In the Patches and Extensions dialog box, choose Next. In the Schedule dialog box, choose Immediately as the remediation time and click Next. In the Host Remediation Options dialog box, click Next. In the Ready to Complete dialog box, click Finish. The Recent Tasks area shows the progress of the VIB installation on the host. When the installation completes, the Attached Baselines area displays the baseline (aci-avs) as compliant. What to Do Next Add the host to an ACI DVS. Verifying the VIB Installation Open a console connection to the ESXi hypervisor. esxcli software vib list grep cisco 4
Installing Cisco AVS Using the ESXi CLI or VMware VUM Adding Cisco AVS Hosts to the DVS Display Cisco VIB files on the host. esxhost# esxcli software vib list grep cisco cisco-vem-v165-esx Cisco PartnerSupported esxhost# Verify that the new VIB file is present on the hypervisor. Adding Cisco AVS Hosts to the DVS You can add only one host at a time. You need to perform this procedure once for every host that you want to add. If you installed the Cisco AVS by using the Cisco VSUM, you do not need to perform this procedure; VSUM adds hosts to the DVS at the same time that it installs the Cisco AVS. However, you do need to perform this procedure if you upgraded Cisco AVS by using the CLI or the VMware VUM. Before You Begin Before you add vleafs to the DVS, ensure that you have created a tenant configuration that contains the required bridge domain, application profiles, endpoint groups, and contracts. For more information, see the Cisco APIC Getting Started Guide. Step 9 In vsphere Web Client, choose Home >Inventories > Networking. In the left navigation pane, choose AVS Distributed Switch, and then click the Hosts tab. Right-click anywhere within the work pane and choose Add Host to vsphere Distributed Switch. In the Add Host to vsphere Distributed Switch dialog box, choose the virtual NIC ports that are connected to the leaf switch (vmnic2, vmnic3). Click Next. In the Network Connectivity dialog box, click Next. In the Virtual Machine Networking dialog box, click Next. In the Ready to Complete dialog box, click Finish. Repeat through for each additional host. 5
