7 Chapter 1. Introduction The Tivoli Configuration Manager is designed to allow for complete management and control of the configuration settings from anywhere on the network using RPC. By utilizing the Tivoli Configuration Manager, Configuration Settings are no longer edited on each machine separately. They can be edited from a central location, saving valuable time. The Tivoli Configuration Manager represents the network using the Windows NT domain and computer networking hierarchy. In Windows NT, a domain represents an enterprise of computers that share common account administration and security. An individual computer is a member of a domain. The Tivoli Configuration Manager fully complies with the Windows NT security system. Consequently, the computers that can be managed by the Tivoli Configuration Manager are constrained by the underlying security in place on the network. Exiting the Configuration Manager You can exit Tivoli Configuration Manager by: 1. Selecting the File menu and then selecting the Close menu item. 2. Clicking the Tivoli Configuration Manager icon in the upper left corner of the main window and then selecting the Close menu item. 3. Clicking the close box on the title bar of the main window. 1

9 Chapter 2. Options Changing Options To display confirmations for update operations, click the confirm all update operations box. To display success messages for all operations, click the display success messages box. Note that any unsuccessful operations will generate error messages even if the display success messages box is not checked. You can change whether Tivoli Configuration Manager asks you for confirmations before performing specific classes of operations. To change the confirmation options, select the View menu from the Tivoli Configuration Manager and then select the Options menu item. The following operations can be set to require or suppress confirmation before the operation: v Confirming Update Operations v Displaying Success Messages Confirmation can be set independently on each of the two operation types. Confirming Update Operations When the Confirm all Update Operations box is checked, the Tivoli Configuration Manager will identify the operation you are about to perform and will ask you to confirm the operation. Clicking Yes will result in the operation being performed. Clicking No will cause the operation to be cancelled. If the Confirm all Update Operations box is not checked, the Tivoli Configuration Manager will perform requested operations without asking for confirmation first. Displaying Success Messages When the Display Success Messages box is checked, the Tivoli Configuration Manager will inform you when the requested operation was successfully performed. By clicking the OK button, the success message will then be dismissed. If the Display Success Messages box is not checked, you will not receive a message indicating the operation was successful. In fact the lack of a message indicates success, as operations that generate errors are always reported by a message. 3

11 Chapter 3. Using the Configuration Manager Graphical Features Network Display Use the graphical features of Tivoli Configuration Manager to expand and collapse the Network display, communicate information, navigate the main window using the keybord, resize the main window, and view the status bar. The Network display is the window display (pane) on the left side of the Tivoli Configuration Manager main window. The label above the Network display reads Network Display. The Network Display contains a tree-like presentation of the enterprises, domains and computers that are managed by the Tivoli Configuration Manager. Collapsing the Network Display The Network Display contains enterprises, domains and computers that can be expanded or collapsed by double clicking on them. A quick way to collapse the whole Network Display at once is to use the Collapse Network Display menu item. The Collapse Network Display menu item can be found in the main window View menu. Expanding the Network Display The Network Display contains enterprises, domains and computers that can be expanded or collapsed by double-clicking them. A quick way to expand the whole Network Display at once is to use the Expand Network Display menu item. Communicating Information The Expand Network Display menu item can be found in the main window s View menu. The Source Computer The main window of the Tivoli Configuration Manager indicates which computer is currently selected in a text box under the toolbar. The Configuration Settings available from the selected Computer appeas in the Settings display. Save changes to Configuration Settings by clicking the Apply button in the Settings display. The Status Bar A status bar on the bottom of the main window describes the state of the current operation. It changes when a new object is selected. 5

12 Navigating the Main Window Using the Keyboard Navigation of the Network display and the Settings Display in the main window is normally done using mouse actions. For example, the mouse can be used to expand or contract the contents of enterprises, domains and computers. The mouse is also normally used to select the enterprise, domain, computer, solution set, or variable of interest. However, the keyboard can also be used to navigate and manipulate the main window. The following keys are supported: Table 1. Supported Keys for Navigating the Main Window Action Object Result Double-click Enterprise Show or hide the domains in the enterprise. Double-click Domain Show or hide the computers in the domain. Click Enterprise Show the default Configuration Settings for all the domains in the Enterprise. Click Domain Show the default Configuration Settings for all the computers in the Domain. Click Computer Show the default Configuration Settings for the computer. Up Arrow All Move to the object above the selected object. Down Arrow All Move to the object below the selected object. Left Arrow Enterprise Hide everything in the enterprise. Left Arrow Domain Hide everything in the domain. Left Arrow Computer Move to the domain the computer is in. Right Arrow Enterprise Expand the enterprise and domain or move to the first domain in the enterprise if already expanded. Right Arrow Domain Expand the domain or move to the first computer in the domain if already expanded. Right Arrow Computer Move to the next computer in the current domain. Alt+N Alt+S Moves focus to the Network Display. Moves focus to the Settings Display if Configuration Settings are visible. Resizing the Main Window The main window of the Tivoli Configuration Manager can easily be resized to accommodate your needs. v v To resize the entire display, move the pointer to a side or corner edge of the display, press the left mouse button and drag as appropriate. To change the width of the Network display relative to the Settings Display within the main window, locate the pointer on the bottom of the Sizing Bar between the Network display and Settings Display. The pointer will change to an East-West pointer to cue you that you are in the right place. 13 Status Bar The Status bar at the bottom of the main window describes the state of the current operation. It changes when a new object is selected. 15 Chapter 4. Tivoli Configuration Manager Menus The following table describes the structure of the Tivoli Solutions Manager menus: Table 2. View Options The Confirmation options control whether certain operations require confirmation and whether success messages are displayed or not. Error messages are always displayed. Help Contents Run the Help program. Help Search for Help On Display the Index tab for Help. Help Using Help Learn how to use Help. Help About Tivoli Configuration Manager Displays a window with the version number of the Tivoli Configuration Manager. Changing Configuration Settings To change the Configuration Settings for a computer, click on the computer s icon in the Network Display. If that computer has Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL installed, then the Configuration Settings will be displayed in the Settings Display. The numeric settings, such as Maximum Items, can be changed by manually typing the desired value or scrolling up or down using the arrow buttons to the right of the value. If the entered value is higher than the maximum value or lower then the minimum value, a message is displayed and the value is set back to the last correct value. Text values can be changed by manually typing the desired value. 9

16 Changing Configuration Settings on Multiple Computers To update Configuration settings on all of the computers in an Enterprise or Domain, select the desired Enterprise or Domain. This will cause the default Configuration settings to appear on the right side of the screen. Change the desired setting and then click on the Apply button. Changing a setting causes any changes to be made on all of the computers in the selected Enterprise or Domain. 10 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Configuration Manager

17 Chapter 5. Setting Up Microsoft SQL For the MAIL action to work using Microsoft SQL, or to collect the Microsoft SQL mailbox and folder statistics (used by the Microsoft SQL rules), the following manual configuration steps need to be taken. These steps must be taken on every computer where the MAIL action is used or where these statistics are collected. 1. Install Microsoft SQL client. 2. Using Microsoft SQL Administrator, create a Tivoli mailbox. 3. Using User Manager, create a domain level account with administrator privilege named Tivoli. 4. Configure Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL to use this account. Enter the domain name, account name (Tivoli) and the password. 5. Log off and log back on under the new Tivoli account. 6. Create a Microsoft SQL profile for Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL to use. This is typically done using the mail applet from within the control panel or by clicking on the Inbox icon. Consult your Microsoft documentation for details. 7. Start the Tivoli Configuration Manager. 8. Click Next until you see the Mail Information tab. 9. Enter the Microsoft SQL profile name in the Profile Name field. Typically this is MS SQLSettings or Microsoft Outlook. 10. Click Finish. 11. Exit Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL. 12. 19 Appendix. Reference Information Interface Components This appendix provides information about interface components and terminology that are used in Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL. Account Information Tab Configures Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL to use the account specified by the Domain and Account fields. The Password for this account must also be entered. This account must be created using User Manager. Collection Information Tab The following settings are used to configure Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL to your needs: v Maximum Items v delivery timeout Default Settings The predefined Configuration Settings. Default Settings are used when the user selects an Enterprise or Domain in the Network Display. General Information Tab The following settings are used to configure Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL to your needs: v Date Format v Time Format v Show Key Expiration Warnings Mail Information Tab Defines how Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL sends mail with the MAIL action: v None v SMTP Mail v Microsoft Microsoft SQL Main Window The main window is the window that the Tivoli Configuration Manager displays when first invoked. The main window displays the Network Display on the left and the Settings Display on the right. The Network display shows the enterprises, domains and computers that are managed by Tivoli Configuration Manager. The Settings Display shows the Configuration Settings for the selected computers. Maximum Value The predefined highest value of a Configuration Setting. Menu Menu refers to the menu items listed horizontally in the Tivoli Configuration Manager main window, just under the window title bar. When the primary (normally left) mouse button is clicked on one of these items, a secondary list of menu items is displayed for subsequent selection. The list of menu items includes File, View, and Help. 13

20 Minimum Value The predefined lowest value of a Configuration Setting. Network Display The Network display is the window display (pane) on the left side of the Tivoli Configuration Manager main window. The label above the Network display reads Network Display. The Network display contains a tree-like presentation of the enterprises, domains and computers that are managed by Tivoli Configuration Manager. Rule Information Tab Automatically Start Rules. Check the box of an item if you want its rules to begin monitoring your computer now and whenever you restart your computer. For example, SQLServer2000 rules monitor Microsoft SQL Server Settings Display The Settings Display is the window display (pane) on the right side of the Tivoli Configuration Manager main window. The label above the Settings Display indicates the computer providing the Configuration Settings used in the display. Sizing Bar The sizing bar is a vertical line located between the Network Display and Settings Display that is used to control the width of the Network Display relative to the Settings Display in the main window of the Tivoli Configuration Manager. Status Bar The Status Bar at the bottom of the main window describes the state of the current operation. It changes when a new object is selected. The Status Bar provides information on the following: Enterprise, Domain, Computer, Date, Time. Toolbar The Toolbar is a special object at the top of the screen that contains buttons. These buttons perform a function or display a screen. Tivoli Configuration Manager includes the following toolbar buttons: Expand Network Display, Collapse Network Display. Terminology Configuration Settings Configuration Settings are all general, account, mail, rule and collection settings for Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL. Configuration Settings are displayed in the following five tabs: v General Information Tab v Account Information Tab v Mail Information Tab v Rule Information Tab v Collection Information Tab Date Format Select United States for the Month/Day/Year format or European for the Day/Month/Year format. 14 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Configuration Manager

21 Domain In Windows NT, a domain represents an enterprise of computers that share common account administration and security. An individual computer is a member of a domain. delivery timeout delivery timeout is the number of seconds it takes for an , sent by Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL, to return a delivery receipt. Rules can be written, using domain MSMicrosoft SQL , to send an to a specified address and perform an action if a delivery receipt is not returned in the amount of time specified by the delivery timeout. Enterprise An Enterprise is a named cluster of domains and computers that has no relationship to real Windows NT domains. Enterprises exist to provide for a more flexible way of updating settings on computers in different domains. For example, if the Enterprise is clicked in the Network Display, the default Configuration settings are displayed in the Settings Display. When you edit any of these settings, the changes will be made to all computers running Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL in the network. Integer Integer variables are stored as numbers ranging in value from -32,768 to 32,767. Left and Right Mouse Buttons The proper terminology for the mouse buttons is primary and secondary. The default mouse button configuration assigns the left mouse button as the primary mouse button and the right mouse button as the secondary. Because of this setup, the common terminology is left and right mouse button rather than primary and secondary mouse button. We have adopted this common terminology. Consequently, when we say left mouse button, we actually mean the primary mouse button and when we say right mouse button, we actually mean the secondary mouse button. Mail - None Prevents Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL from sending Mail. Maximum Items This limits the number of entities (such as files or events) a single Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL rule collects. You should set this number large enough to handle the largest collection any of your rules will perform. If this number is not large enough, Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL might be prevented from diagnosing potential problems. Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL allocates memory for every entity collected, so the greater this number is, the greater the potential memory usage. Microsoft Microsoft SQL Use Microsoft SQL to send mail. Enter the Profile Name setup for Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL in the control panel. Several manual configuration steps must be taken after you finish installing Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL. See Chapter 5. Setting Up Microsoft SQL on page 11. 22 Object statistics (used by the Microsoft SQL rules), the mail service must be set to Microsoft SQL. The profile name specified is used to collect these statistics. An object refers to an enterprise, domain, computer, Configuration Settings, Settings Display, or Status Bar. Rule A Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL rule is a named entity that is used to monitor a specific situation and if appropriate, take corrective action and perform external notification. A Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL rule consists of the following four major components: 1. The schedule that defines when the rule executes. 2. The selections that define which entities (such as disks, files, and processes) the rule should examine. 3. The conditions for which to look. 4. The action to take if the condition is found to be true (or false). Within each component, there is considerable power and flexibility that can be explored by running the Tivoli Rule Designer. Show Key Expiration Warnings This feature is not active. SMTP Mail Use SMTP to send mail. Enter the name of the SMTP Mail Server if not the local computer. This is the computer in your network on which SMTP is running. Time Format Select 12 Hour for the 12 hour time format. Select 24 Hour for the 24 hour time format. 1:00:00 PM in the 12 hour time format corresponds to 13:00:00 in the 24 hour time format. Getting Help There are a variety of ways to get help. The Help menu in the main window of the Tivoli Configuration Manager provides four separate options: v Contents displays the main Help window. v Search for Help On displays the Index tab for this help file. v.
