Preface What s New 0 The following describes the new feature that is available in this version of the IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component: Work with Quotas defined on Network Appliance filers. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component now enables you to import, view, and report on the Quotas defined on Network Appliance filers. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component automatically imports certain Quotas from NetApp filers when you schedule and run a special Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Quota checking job. You can then use the Network Appliance Quotas node under Policy Management to: view the definition for each imported Quota determine when and how you will be alerted when the hard limit defined with a NetApp Quota is close to being violated. For example, you can define to be alerted when: a user or user group is close to reaching the hard limit defined within the corresponding NetApp Quota the space consumed on a Qtree is approaching the hard limit defined within the corresponding NetApp Quota You can use Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component to work with specific NetApp Quotas that are defined to limit the space: used on Qtrees consumed by specific users consumed by specific user groups See the Policy Management chapter in this user guide for more information on how to work with NetApp Quotas on NAS filers. 9 IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Overview Overview 0 What is IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager? 0 IBM's Tivoli Storage Resource Manager is the industry's first and best Java- and web-based Storage Resource Management (SRM) solution designed for the open enterprise. Providing unparalleled flexibility in monitoring, alerting, and reporting on the storage assets of your enterprise, Tivoli Storage Resource Manager helps you: Reduce storage costs Ensure application availability Forecast future storage needs Make data owners accountable for storage usage Tivoli Storage Resource Manager's user interface (UI) uses a familiar tree-based navigation system similar to the scheme used in Microsoft Windows Explorer. This system allows you to see a hierarchical organization of the product and its features in the left pane of the interface while viewing detailed reports and charts in the right pane. The following graphic shows the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager s main window: function tree content pane Figure 1 Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Main Window IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-3

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Overview Purpose 0 Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component enables storage administrators to monitor, report on, and manage networked attached storage (NAS) resources. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component is seamlessly integrated with the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager suite to provide organizations with a universal view of direct attached and network attached storage, from a filesystem or application perspective. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component helps organizations manage network attached storage as an integrated part of the enterprise storage environment, reducing storage costs, better managing enterprise storage resources, preventing storage problems, and ensuring data and application availability. Architecture 0 Tivoli Storage Resource Manager is based upon a three-tier architecture: a UI component, a Server component, and an Agent component. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agents collect statistics about your storage and send that information to the centralized Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Server. Install Agent(s) on Windows or Unix machines from which the NAS filers you want to scan are visible. You do not install Agents to the NAS filers themselves rather, you install them to Windows and/or Unix machines that have access to those NAS filers (for example, install Agents to Windows machines that can access your NAS filers; install Agents to Unix machines that have imports for the filesystems within your NAS filers). The Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Server: Receives information from the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agent(s) and saves that information in the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Enterprise Repository. The Enterprise Repository is where all of your storage information and usage statistics are stored. All Agent and UI access to the central repository is done via a series of calls and requests made to the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Server. Receives user requests made in the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager UI and retrieves the requested statistical information from the central repository. Users can then use this information construct and view reports. The Tivoli Storage Resource Manager UI enables users to make requests for information and then generate/display reports based on that information. Note All database access is done via the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Server component to maximize performance and to eliminate the need to install database connectivity software on your Agent and UI machines. See the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Installation Guide for more detailed information about installing these components. 1-4 IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Overview The following figure illustrates a sample configuration of Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component within an environment containing NAS filers. A systems or storage administrator can run the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager UI component from a local direct connect client, a mobile web client, or a local web client machine. The Server component acts as a central traffic cop, directing all aspects of the operation of Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. All user requests made in the UI are sent to the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Server. The Server retrieves the appropriate data from the central repository and returns it to the UI, allowing the user to construct and display reports. It also directs Agent activity via its embedded job-scheduling component. The Agents for scanning NAS filers can be installed on Windows or Unix machines that have access to those NAS filers. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component can monitor the filesystems on the NAS filers that were discovered The NAS filers within your environment are automatically discovered by Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. Figure 2 Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component - Sample Configuration For More Information See the following guides for more detailed information about how to use Tivoli Storage Resource Manager with Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component to monitor your storage environment: Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Reference Guide Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Quick Reference Guide IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-5

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Installing and Configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Installing and Configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component 0 This section describes how to install and configure Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component in a new environment (i.e., Tivoli Storage Resource Manager is not currently installed in that environment). If you are upgrading an existing installation of Tivoli Storage Resource Manager, see the Upgrading to the IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component section. Understanding Your Environment 0 Before installing and configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component, you must be aware of the domains for: the user whose ID/password Tivoli Storage Resource Manager will use to log into the discovering/scanning Agent and NAS filers the Agents that will perform the discovery and scan of NAS filers the NAS filers you want to discover and scan Keep the following in mind: NAS filers that you want monitor have to be configured to be a member of a Windows domain. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager uses the login/password you enter during the installation process or on the Filer Logins window to perform a: local login on the Agent that will perform a discovery/scan of NAS filers a remote login on the NAS filers The login/password must be valid for both the Agent and the NAS filer. See the 1. Specify Logins for NAS Filers (Windows only) section for more information about the Remote Server Logins window. The user whose account information is being used by Tivoli Storage Resource Manager to log into a NAS filer is in the same domain as that NAS filer. The Agent that is logging into and scanning the NAS filer is not required to be in the same domain as the user or the NAS filer. The domain of the Agent machine must trust the domain of the NAS filer (which is the same domain as the user). 1-6 IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Installing and Configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Install the IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component 0 Perform the following steps to install Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS: 1 Run the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager setup program. Insert the IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager CD into the machine where you want to install the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component, access the appropriate OS folder, and run the setup program. 2 Enter the license key for Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component and Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. After you start the installation process and choose the components you want to install, the License Key Entry window appears. Enter the license key for Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component that was provided to you by an IBM representative. 3 Specify configuration information for Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component. Enter configuration information for your NAS filers on the NAS Discovery Parameters window that appears during the installation process. For Windows: Enter information in this window if you are using Tivoli Storage Resource Manager agents on Windows machines to discover and scan the NAS filers within your environment. CIFS (Common Internet File System) requires Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agents on Windows machines to have a valid user ID and password to log into NAS filers. For Unix: You are only required to enter information in the SNMP Communities field on this window if you are using Tivoli Storage Resource Manager agents installed on Unix machines to discover and scan your NAS filers. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager will automatically (without a user name/password) discover the NAS filers for which it has an import on the Unix machines where Agents are installed. This NAS Discovery Parameters window contains the following fields: User Name, Password (Windows only) Enter the default user name and password that Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agents on Windows machines will use when logging into NAS filers. When attempting to perform an initial discovery of NAS filers after the installation process is complete, Tivoli Storage Resource Manager will use the name and password in these fields to log in to the NAS Filers. Keep in mind that the user must be in the same domain as the NAS filers you want to discover. If a NAS filer requires a different user name and password than the default user name and password entered on this window, an error will occur when Tivoli Storage Resource Manager attempts to discover the filesystems on that NAS filer. For the NAS filers that require a user name and password other than the default, you must access the Login Administration window within the Client UI to assign the correct user name and password to those filers. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-7

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Installing and Configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component SNMP Communities (Windows and Unix) Enter the name of the SNMP communities Tivoli Storage Resource Manager should use when communicating with machines in your environment. If you do not enter the name of an SNMP community, the default community public is used. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager uses the SNMP protocol to contact and identify NAS filers. 4 Install and license Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agents. Install and license Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agent(s) on Windows or Unix machines from which the NAS filers you want to scan are visible. You do not install Agents to the NAS filers themselves rather, you install them to Windows and/or Unix machines that have access to those NAS filers (for example, install Agents to Windows machines within the same domain as NAS filers; install Agents to Unix machines that have imports for the filesystems within the NAS filers). 5 Complete the installation and discover NAS Filers. 6 After you complete the installation process, Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agents perform an initial discovery of the NAS filers in the domain (Windows) or the filers for which they have an import (Unix). A Discovery job is sent to every Unix Agent and to one Windows machine in each Windows domain (one Windows machine in each domain is responsible for finding all the NAS filers that are accessible from within its domain). For Windows: If NAS filers within the environment require a user name and password other than the default you entered on the NAS Discovery Parameters window, the discovery of filesystems on those NAS filers will fail. You must access the Filer Logins window within the Client UI to assign the correct user name and password to those filers. For Unix: Tivoli Storage Resource Manager will discover filers using the Agents on machines that contain imports for NAS filer filesystems. A Discovery job will: log in to NAS filers. gather information about the filesystems visible on those filers to the Agent. For Unix, it gathers information about file systems that it can actually see (i.e. filesystems that are mounted to the Unix boxes). For Windows, it finds all the NAS filers that are visible through CIFS. determines which filesystems are visible to which Agents. 7 If all your NAS filers use the default login ID and password provided on the NAS Discovery window, or your NAS filers are accessible to Unix Agents, continue to the 3. License Agents and NAS Filers section. If some of your NAS filers require login IDs and passwords other than the default, continue to the next section, Configure the IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component. 1-8 IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Installing and Configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Configure the IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component 0 Perform the steps in this section only if your NAS filer(s) require a different login ID and password than the default one you provided during the installation process. If all your NAS filers use the default login ID and password, or your NAS filers are accessible to Unix Agents, you can skip this section and continue to the next section, 4. Assign Agents to Filesystems. Note CIFS (Common Internet File System) requires users to log in to gain access to shares. Unix Agents do not use CIFS to communicate with NAS filers, and therefore do not require a user ID and password. After you install Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component, it automatically performs a discovery of your NAS filers using the default login information you provided. If a NAS filer uses an ID and password other than the default you provided, the discovery of that NAS filer s filesystems will fail. Before you can use Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component to monitor and scan the storage on those NAS filers, you must reconfigure and rerun Discovery jobs on them. This section describes how to install configure NAS filers that do not use the default logon ID/ password and run Discovery jobs on those filers. Configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component consists of the following steps: 1. Specify Logins for NAS Filers (Windows only). Perform this step for Windows Agents that were unable to discover the filesystems on NAS filers using the default user name and password entered during the installation process. 2. Discover NAS Filers. After you set the logon ID and password for NAS filers that do not use the default settings, you must run a Discovery job against those filers. 3. License Agents and NAS Filers. Before you can assign Agents to NAS filers and monitor their storage, you must assign Tivoli Storage Resource Manager licenses to the Agents that will monitor NAS filers, and assign Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component licenses to the NAS filers that you want to monitor 4. Assign Agents to Filesystems. Assign an Agent to each of the filesystems in your NAS filers. You must perform this step before you can monitor and scan the storage on your NAS filers. 1. Specify Logins for NAS Filers (Windows only) 1 Start a Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Client UI session. 2 Expand the Configuration! General node in the function tree. 3 Click the License Keys node. The License Key Editor window appears. 4 Click next to Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component. The Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component License Editor window appears and displays all the NAS filers discovered by Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-9

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Installing and Configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component 5 Click the Filer Logins tab. The Filer Logins window appears and displays a list of licensed NAS filers. Because Unix Agents do not require password administration to access NAS Filer filesystems, any NAS filers accessible by Unix Agents within your environment will not appear in this window. 6 Highlight the row containing the NAS filer whose login ID and password you want to set and click Set login per row. If you want to set the same login ID and password for multiple NAS filers, highlight the rows containing the entries for the filers using Shift+click or Ctrl+click and click Set login for all selected rows. The File Login Editor window appears. 7 Enter a valid, fully-qualified user login ID and password for each of the listed NAS filers that do not accept the default login ID and password. The user logins must have permission to enumerate the filesystems in every NAS filer against which you want to run discovery. Tivoli Storage Resource Manager uses the login/password you enter during the installation process or on the Remote Server Logins window to perform a: local login on the Agent that will perform a discovery/scan of NAS filers a remote login on the NAS filers The login/password must be valid for both the Agent and the NAS filer. If the user is not in the same domain as the NAS Filer, you must qualify the domain name in the user ID (for example, \tivoli\tsrm\jsmith, \COMPANYABC\jdoe, etc). 8 Click Save. The Filer Logins window reappears and the new login ID(s) for the NAS filer(s) is displayed. 2. Discover NAS Filers After you set the logon ID and password for NAS filers that do not use the default settings, you must run a Discovery job against those filers. A Discovery job will: log in to those NAS filers IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Installing and Configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component gather information about the filesystems visible on those filers to the Agent. For Unix, it gathers information about file systems that it can actually see (i.e. filesystems that are mounted to the Unix boxes). For Windows, it finds all the NAS filers that are visible through CIFS. determines which filesystems are visible to which Agents. To run a Discovery job: 1 Expand the Monitoring node in the function tree. 2 Right click the Discovery node. A pop-up menu appears. 3 Select Run Now. A Discovery job will run and the appropriate Agents will use the login ID and password you specified to discover the filesystems on the NAS filers that were not discovered during installation. 4 Continue to the 3. License Agents and NAS Filers section after Tivoli Storage Resource Manager has discovered the filesystems on your NAS filers. 3. License Agents and NAS Filers Before you can assign Agents to NAS filers and monitor their storage, you must: 1 assign Tivoli Storage Resource Manager licenses to the Agents that will monitor NAS filers 2 assign Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component licenses to the NAS filers you want to monitor See the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Installation Guide and Configuration and Getting Started Guide for more detailed information about how to license Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component in your environment. 4. Assign Agents to Filesystems Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Scan jobs enable you to gather detailed information about the NAS filesystems within your environment. To do this, you must assign an Agent to each of the filesystems discovered by Tivoli Storage Resource Manager during the Discovery process. If Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Agents were unable to log into a NAS filer, you will not be able to assign Agents to the filesystems on those filers. You can assign an Agent to scan one or more filesystems. However, keep in mind that the size of a filesystem affects the speed at which that filesystem is scanned. Distributing filesystem scanning responsibilities among different Agents can greatly increase the speed at which Scan information is gathered. For example, if you have three small filesystems and one large one, you might want to assign one Agent to each of the three smaller filesystems, and a different Agent to the large filesystem. To assign Agents to the filesystems on NAS filers 1 Access the Scan/Probe Agent Administration window in the Configuration! General node of the function tree to assign Agents to each of the filesystems discovered in your NAS filers. You can assign any licensed Agent to a filesystem that has the ability to access that filesystem. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-11

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Installing and Configuring Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Note If you do not assign an Agent to a filesystem, Tivoli Storage Resource Manager will not scan and gather information about that filesystem. The NAS filers discovered Windows Agents The Windows domains where the NAS filers are located The filesystems discovered in the NAS filers The Windows/Unix Agents assigned to the filesystems in the NAS filers 2 Highlight the row containing the filesystem to which you want to assign an Agent and click Set agent per row. If you want to assign the same Agent to multiple filesystems, highlight the rows containing the entries for the filesystems using Shift+click or Ctrl+click and click Set agent for all selected rows. The Filesystem Agent Editor window appears. 3 Select the Agent you want to assign to the filesystem(s) from the Scan/Probe Agent dropdown list IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Upgrading to the IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component License Agents and NAS Filers 0 Before you can assign Agents to NAS filers and monitor their storage, you must: 1 assign Tivoli Storage Resource Manager licenses to the Agents that will monitor NAS filers 2 assign Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component licenses to the NAS filers you want to monitor See the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Installation Guide and the Configuration and Getting Started Guide for more detailed information about how to license Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component in your environment. Assign Agents to Filesystems 0 Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Scan jobs enable you to gather detailed information about the NAS filesystems within your environment. You can assign any Agent to a filesystem that has the ability to access that filesystem IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Upgrading to the IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Note If you do not assign an Agent to a filesystem, Tivoli Storage Resource Manager will not scan and gather information about that filesystem. 3 Select the Agent you want to assign to the filesystem(s) from the Scan/Probe Agent dropdown list. Note You can only select Agents to which Tivoli Storage Resource Manager licenses are associated. Agents that do not have a Tivoli Storage Resource Manager license will not appear in this drop-down list. For more information about Tivoli Storage Resource Manager licensing, see the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Installation Guide and the Configuration and Getting Started Guide. 29 IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component 0 Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component is designed to seamlessly integrate with the interface and functionality of Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. You can perform the same operations against NAS filesystems as you would against other OS filesystems, including Scans, Probes, Quotas, Constraints, etc. This section describes the main tasks you can perform using Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component. See the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Reference Guide for detailed information about how to use all the features provided by Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. Quick Steps for the IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component 0 The following steps provide an overview of how to get started using Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component. Step 1. Install Tivoli Storage Resource Manager and Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component. 1a. Upgrade to Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component. Why do this? Perform this step to install Tivoli Storage Resource Manager and Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component to a new environment: enter the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager and Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component license keys enter general installation information required for Tivoli Storage Resource Manager For Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component: (Windows only) enter the default user name and password Windows Agents should use when discovering the filesystems on NAS filers enter the name of the SNMP community Tivoli Storage Resource Manager should use when communicating with NAS filers Perform this step to add Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component to an existing Tivoli Storage Resource Manager installation: run the upgrade program enter a NAS license key and restart Server discover NAS filers assign agents to filesystems When and how often should I do this? Perform this step to install Tivoli Storage Resource Manager and Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component in an environment where they have not previously been installed. Perform this step to upgrade an existing installation of Tivoli Storage Resource Manager to include Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-23

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Step 2. Configure Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component. 3. Define Groups to represent the entities within your organization. 4. Determine what information you want to gather about NAS filers and define the appropriate Monitoring jobs. Why do this? Perform this step to enable Tivoli Storage Resource Manager to scan and discover NAS filers: (Windows only) define the IDs and passwords that Tivoli Storage Resource Manager will use to log into NAS filers that do not accept the default login information (Windows only) run a Discovery job assign the appropriate licenses to Agents and NAS filers assign a licensed Agent to each of the filesystems discovered by Tivoli Storage Resource Manager (optional) change the default login (optional) add SNMP communities Organizing the users, NAS filers, filesystems, and directories within your organization into Groups enables you to quickly target specific entities against which to collect information, set quotas and constraints, and view reports. Determining what information you want to gather about your NAS filers is critical to helping you implement an SRM strategy. Probes and Scans are the Monitoring jobs you can define to collect information about NAS filers. The information gathered by these jobs is: used to determine if alerts are triggered reflected on the reports available in the Reporting facility When and how often should I do this? Typically, you perform this step immediately after installing Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. Once Tivoli Storage Resource Manager is configured, you do not have to perform this step again unless changes within your organization require it (such as changing the default login information, adding a new SNMP community, adding a NAS filer, etc). Create Groups before you define the: Monitoring jobs that will collect information about your NAS filers Quotas and Constraints that will enforce your storage policies Define Monitoring jobs after you have: assigned an Agent to each of the filesystems on the NAS filers discovered by Tivoli Storage Resource Manager determined the types of information you want to collect about your NAS filers Once you define a job to collect specific information about your storage, you do not need to redefine that job in the future (unless you want to make changes to it such as adding new computers or groups) defining a Monitoring job is a one-time only task. Once defined, the job will run according the schedule that you define IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Step 5. Determine what conditions must occur before you are alerted to a problem within a NAS filer. 6. Determine the storage policies you want to enforce. 7. Use the Reporting Facility to view information gathered by Monitoring jobs and violations of thresholds defined in Quotas and Constraints. Why do this? Determining when and how you will be alerted to conditions within a NAS filer is important to helping you maintain and administer your resources. Define Computer, Filesystem, and Directory Alerts that will notify you when certain conditions are detected in a NAS filer, filesystem, and directory. When a condition is met and alert is triggered, you can choose to be notified through a SNMP trap, login notification, event log (Windows), syslog (Unix), or . If you need a way to find and fix problems or potential problems as alerts are triggered, you can use the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Triggered Action facility to automatically address these problems. Enforcing storage policies within your organization can be critical to ensuring the proper and most cost-effective use of your storage devices. Use: Quotas to define limits on the amount of storage that a user or a group of users can consume Constraints to define the acceptable and unacceptable file types, file sizes, and file owners for a computer or a set of computers in your environment Scheduled Actions to run scripts against storage devices on a schedule that you define When a condition within a Quota or Constraint is met, you can choose to be notified through a SNMP trap, login notification, event log (Windows), syslog (Unix), or . The Reporting facility enables you to have a detailed or summary view of all your NAS filers, enterprise-wide or by age, operating system, computer, file system, and/or user. All the information available through the Reporting facility is gathered by Monitoring, Alerting, or Quota jobs. When and how often should I do this? You should define alerts: after defining Monitoring jobs based on the information gathered by Monitoring jobs Once you define an Alert, you do not need to redefine it in the future (unless you want to make changes to it) defining an Alert is a one-time only task. Computer, Filesystem, and Directory Alerts are checked whenever a Probe or Scan job is run. Computer Alerts are triggered by Probes. Filesystem and Directory Alerts are triggered by Scans. Define Quotas and Constraints: after defining Scan jobs based on the information gathered by Scan jobs Quotas: Once defined, a Quota will run according to the schedule that you specified. Because Quotas look at the information gathered by Scans to determine if a quota is violated, you should schedule Quotas to run after the appropriate Scan job(s). Constraints: Constraints are automatically checked whenever an appropriate Scan is run. Scheduled Actions: You can run Scheduled Actions: immediately, once at a specified time/date, or repeatedly according to a schedule you specify. You should view reports through the Reporting facility whenever you want to view information about the NAS filers within your enterprise. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-25

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Basics 0 Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component uses the same user interface and conventions as Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. The interface is designed to include a number of repeating elements and consistent themes to help you better perform the critical storage management tasks related your NAS filers. By understanding how these elements and themes form a logical pattern with the interface, you can learn to quickly navigate and use the Monitoring, Alerting, Policy Management, and Reporting facilities within Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. Creatable Objects You can create a number objects when working in Tivoli Storage Resource Manager to help simplify the Monitoring, Alerting, and Reporting process. Objects represent reusable definitions you can execute to perform specific tasks. Each object you can create belongs to a specific object type. The main Tivoli Storage Resource Manager object types appear in the product function tree and are defined in the following table: Object Type Groups (Monitoring, Policy Management) Discovery (Monitoring) Probes (Monitoring) Scans (Monitoring) Profiles (Monitoring) Quotas (Policy Management) Function and Use Create named groups of computers, file systems, directories, users, and OS user groups within Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. This allows you to more easily refer to those entities when you are defining things like monitoring jobs. A Discovery job allows you to define when you want to run the Discovery job and what alerts to trigger. The Discovery job will search for NAS filers and their associated filesystems that are not yet being monitored by Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. Create Probe objects to itemize and create and inventory of your storage assets, such as NAS filers, controllers, disk drives, file systems, logical units, etc. Create Scan objects to monitor the usage and consumption of your storage. Create Profile objects to define what files you want to scan and what statistical information you want to gather. Create Quota objects to control how much space a user, or group of users, can consume. This consumption can be controlled at three levels: the filesystem level, the computer level, or the entire network level IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Object Type Constraints (Policy Management) Alerts (Alerts) Function and Use Create Constraint objects to define what are acceptable and unacceptable file types, file sizes, and file owners on a computer or a set of computers in your environment. This allows you to do things like restrict users from storing files such as MP3 files on servers. Create Alert objects to define events that you want Tivoli Storage Resource Manager to watch for. By defining the events that you want to be alerted about, you will be notified by the product in the manner you specify when one of those events occurs. Exporting User-Defined Objects You can migrate user-defined objects from one Tivoli Server to another by using an export utility run from a command line. Exporting an objects enables you to define that object once and re-use it with the jobs on another Server. You can migrate the following objects between Tivoli servers: Groups Profiles Constraints Batch Reports To export user-defined objects, export the objects to a file and then import the data in that file into the new Server. The export utility is found in the Tivoli directory, home/server/tools. The valid command line arguments are: To export user defined objects to a file, type: export -e <target-file-name> where target-file-name represents a fully qualified file name. To import previously exported data, type: export -i <target-file-name> where target-file-name represents a fully qualified file name. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-27

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Schedulable Jobs Another type of creatable object are Schedulable Jobs. When you expand the tree under a named object (for example, Probes), the actual job runs for that object are displayed. For example, the monitoring jobs that you create will run according to the schedule that you specify when you define the object. The schedulable job objects are defined in the following table: Job Type Discovery (Monitoring) Probe Job (Monitoring Scan Job (Monitoring Quota Checking Job (Policy Management) Aggregator Job Function and Use A Discovery job allows you to define when you want to run discovery and what alerts to trigger. The Discovery job will search for NAS filers and their associated filesystems that are not yet being monitored by Tivoli Storage Resource Manager. Probe jobs itemize and create and inventory of your storage assets, such as NAS filers, controllers, disk drives, file systems, logical units, etc. You can create many Probe jobs to run on any computer or subset of computers. Scan jobs monitor the usage and consumption of your storage. Constraints are also checked during Scan Jobs. You can create many Scan jobs to monitor the file systems of NAS filers or subset of NAS filers. Quota Checking jobs control how much space a user, or group of users, can consume. This consumption can be controlled at three levels: the filesystem level, the computer level, or at the whole network level. Aggregator Jobs run on a periodic basis and sum up storage usage across computers to allow for enforcement of quotas that span multiple machines IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Job Runs When you create a schedulable job object, you can define when you want a job to run. You can choose to run the job: Immediately At a specified time Repeatedly on a specified schedule The term job run refers to whenever a job executes. Each job run is recorded as an entry in the product function tree and is displayed under the corresponding Schedule Job Definition (for example, Scan Definition). If you expand a job definition node (for example, the Scan node) to display its sub nodes, you will see one sub node for each job that has run. The number of jobs that are displayed is definable in the configuration facility. The job nodes that appear in the function tree are color-coded to help you quickly determine the status of a job: Job Type Job Run Node is Green Job Run Node is Red Job Run Node is Blue Function and Use The job ran successfully on all the machines on which it was deployed. The job failed. If an alert was defined for the job, you will be notified by the alert. You can also view the job log to view the error. To do this, click the job to view the run detail for the job that shows each computer on which the job ran. The status column in the detail window indicates if the job ran successfully. Click the magnifying glass icon for the computer that experienced an error to then view the log. The job is currently running on one or more machines. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-29

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Groups A Group represents a set of user-defined objects against which you can run Monitoring jobs, run Quota checking jobs, and view reports. Group Why use this group? Examples Computer Groups (Monitoring jobs, Constraints) Include Computer Groups in a Scan or Probe to monitor NAS filers that are related to each other or belong to a common group such as a department, a location, a territory, etc. A NAS filer can belong to one Computer Group only. Examples of Computer Groups: Sales, Accounting, Development, IT Note: the Computer Groups you define in Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component will also available in Tivoli Storage Resource Manager and Tivoli Storage Resource Manager/Apps. The Scheduled Action facility enables you to run scripts according to the schedule that you define you do not have to associate the script with an alert. NAS filers groups of NAS filers Quotas Quotas allow you to specify limits at three different levels for individual users or group of users: at the Filesystem level define a Quota for a user or OS user at the filesystem level. at the Computer level define a Quota that places limits on a specific NAS filer for a user or OS user. This means that the Quota you set for a user or group of users will be monitored on each NAS filer included in the Quota. at the Network level define a Quota that place limits over multiple machines. You can place network level limits on users or OS users for all the computers (or a chosen subset) or filesystems in your environment. To Set a Quota 1 Expand the Policy Management! Quotas nodes of the function tree. The function tree expands to display the quotas you can define, which includes User and OS User Group. 2 Expand the User or OS User Group node depending on the type of quota you want to create. 47 IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Use the Filesystems tab to select the filesystems against which the Quota will apply. You can select individual filesystems, as well as filesystem groups that you have previously defined using the Group facility. Note An Agent must be assigned to a filesystem on a NAS filer before that filesystem will appear in this tab. Use the Computers tab to select the NAS filers against which the Quota will apply. You can select individual NAS filers as well as groups of NAS filers that you have previously defined using the Group facility. Use the When to CHECK tab to schedule how often you want the Quota to be checked. Use the Alert tab to define an alert that will be triggered if a user or user group violates the Quota. 6 Save the Quota definition. The Quota is saved to the repository and will checked as scheduled. How Quotas Work 1 A Scan gathers extensive information about the NAS filers, filesystems, and directories within an enterprise. This information is stored in the Enterprise Repository. 2 When a Quota job runs, it checks the information in the Enterprise Repository to determine if any Quota violations exist. 3 If there are any violations, an alert is triggered and the appropriate action is taken. Tip Because the information analyzed by Quotas is provided by Scans, you should schedule a Quota to run after all the corresponding Scans. This ensures that Quotas are using the latest information to determine violations. Network Appliance Quotas You can use Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component to work with Quotas defined using the software provided with Network Appliance Filers. Using the Network Appliance node under Policy Management, you can: import certain Quotas from NetApp filers when you schedule and run a Quota checking job view the definition for each imported Quota determine when and how you will be alerted when the hard limit defined with a NetApp Quota is close to being violated. For example, you can define to be alerted when: a user or user group is close to reaching the hard limit defined within the corresponding NetApp Quota IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-41

Exporting Constraints enables you to define Constraints once and re-use them with the jobs on another Server. To do this, simply export the user-defined objects to a file, then import the exported data into the new Server. Scheduled Actions Tivoli Storage Resource Manager's Scheduled Action facility enables you to schedule scripts to run against selected NAS filers and NAS filer groups. The Scheduled Actions facility is script-based, allowing you to use any third-party tools for actions, such as archiving, back-up and recovery, or provisioning. You can schedule scripts to run: immediately once at a specified time and date repeatedly according to a schedule you specify Select the option you want and then edit the time and date information accordingly. You can also select the time zone for the schedule you specify. You can either select the time zone that the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager server is in or any other time zone. Note The Scheduled Actions facility should not be confused with the Triggered Action facility. The Triggered Action facility enables you to run scripts based upon conditions/alerts that are detected within your storage environment. The Scheduled Action facility enables you to run scripts according to the schedule that you define, without having to associate the script with an alert. 59 IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Working with Scripts 0 Tivoli Storage Resource Manager's has two facilities that enable you to execute scripts against your storage devices: The Triggered Action facility enables you to define thresholds and constraints that result in notification or action. The Scheduled Action facility enables you to schedule scripts to run against selected NAS filers and NAS filer groups. Both facilities are script-based, allowing you to use any third-party tools for actions, such as archiving, back-up and recovery, or provisioning. How Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Runs Scripts During installation, Tivoli Storage Resource Manager creates a directory on every Server and Agent machine called: \<install_directory>\scripts, where <install_directory> represents to the directory where the Agent or Server is installed. The default installation directory for Tivoli Storage Resource Manager components is: (Windows) \Program Files\Tivoli\TSRM (Unix) /opt/tivoli/tsrm or /usr/tivoli/tsrm When a script is run: 1 The Server looks in its local \scripts directory. 2 If the Server can resolve that script name, it loads that script and sends it to the Agent where you designated the script to be run. When running a script against a NAS filer, the script is run from the Agent assigned to the filesystem where the triggering condition occurred. 3 The Agent receives the script, names it as a temporary file, and runs it. 4 After the Agent has finished running the script, the temporary file is deleted. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-53

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Running scripts in response to an Alert When you define an Alert, you can define a script to be run when the triggered condition is met. 1 On the Alert tab, check Run Script. 2 Press. The Specify Script dialog box displays IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component 3 Enter the name of the script in the Script Name field. Note This script name is used to tell the Server what script to send to the Agent. If the script sent by the Server is run by the Agent, the name of the script will not be the name you specify in the Script Name field. Instead, the Agent names the script as temporary file, runs it, then deletes it after the script has run. Because of this, you should not have code in your script that depends on this script name. 4 Specify where you want the script to run in the Where to Run field. You can select a specific Agent, or the triggering computer. For example, if a constraint is violated on a filesystem on a specific machine, you would typically want the script to run the machine that triggered the constraint violation. (For some types of Alerts such as Job Failed, you will not have the option to run the script on the triggering computer. Here you can run the script on any agent you choose.) Note If you want to run script against a filesystem on a NAS filer, you must select the Agent that is assigned to the filesystem from this field. 5 The Script Parameters section displays what parameters will be passed to the script when it is run. Each triggering condition passes different parameters. The parameters will be passed in the order specified on the dialog box. See Reporting for information on all available script parameters. 6 When you are finished, press. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Supplement 1-55

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager NAS Component Reporting 0 The Reporting component of Tivoli Storage Resource Manager allows you to view both overview and detailed information about your storage.
