5 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 1 INTRODUCTION This document describes how to install the PC program that controls the Hot Disk Thermal Constant Analyzer hardware. 2 PREREQUISITES The program needs the.net framework, NI-Serial and license file in order to work properly. Make sure that these are installed. If the possibility to export data to Excel is desired, then Microsoft Excel needs to be installed. Make sure not to connect the Hot Disk Thermal Constant Analyzer USB cable to the computer before the installation of NI-Serial! It is recommended that you have the computer connected to the internet during the first installation of the Hot Disk software so that your license key can be authenticated automatically. 2.1 Windows Hot Disk software is compatible with booth 32-bit and 64-bit version of Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows NET Framework 4.0 or later It is usually already installed on newer computers but if not it will be automatically downloaded from internet and installed when you install the Hot Disk Thermal Analysis software. 2.3 Custom License Data File Since the Hot Disk software installer is generic the customer license data is in a separate file. You should have received this file by mail or on a USB memory stick. Place the file where it can be accessed from the computer that you are installing the software on. The computer only needs to have access to this file the first time the software is executed. 2.4 License key You should have received this key by mail or on a USB memory stick. It will be automatically authenticated over the internet by the software itself. Therefore it is recommended that you have the computer connected to the internet when installing Hot Disk Thermal Constants Analyzer. You can however run the software during one month without the license key and it can be authenticated by ing a file to software@hotdisk.se and loading the file you will receive back.

6 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 2.5 NI-Serial 1. Do not connect the Hot Disk Thermal Constant Analyzer USB cable to the computer before installing the NI-Serial software. 2. Insert the NI-Serial CD delivered to you together with your system. The following dialog should popup automatically. Click on Install Software. 3. Follow the instructions on screen. NI-Serial and NI-VISA will be installed. If you have received a Hot Disk USB memory stick, you can find the installer for NI-Serial 4.1 (niser410.exe) or later on it. Windows 7 requires NI-Serial or later. We recommend NI-Serial 4.1 or later because some major bugs where fixed in that version. Later versions of NI-Serial can be downloaded from

7 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 2.6 Microsoft Excel 2007 or later You must have full version of Excel 2007 or later installed on your system (or Microsoft Office 2007 or later), to be able to export calculation results from the software as an Excel file. Otherwise you will only be able to export them as a text file. Only the minimum Excel installation with one shared Office feature, Visual Basic for Applications, is required. Depending on Office release, this feature might be installed by default or not. To install this feature or verify that it is installed, go to Windows Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs, and select Microsoft Office xx and click change : The installer for Office will then start. Select Add or Remove Features.

9 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 3 INSTALLING HOT DISK THERMAL ANALYSIS The installer for Hot Disk Analysis 7.3 is generic meaning that all clients should run the same installer. It is compatible with all TPS models. At any time the user can update his software by downloading and running the latest installer. 1. If you have downloaded the software as a zip-file a. Copy it to any directory on the computer that you want to use for Hot Disk Thermal Analysis b. Extract both files to the same directory c. Run the extracted Setup.exe 2. If you don t have.net Framework 4.0 or later already installed on the computer the following dialog will appear If you have an internet connection, you may click on Accept. 3. When the.net Framework is installed, the installer continues installing Hot Disk Analysis 7.3, showing this dialog:

10 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) Click on Next to continue. It is possibly to change the suggested folder but it must be a folder you have write privileges for. Attention: Folders under C:\Program Files are usually write protected. 4. Click on Next to continue.

11 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 5. Click on Next again when the next dialog is displayed. 6. You may have to confirm that you accept the installation. A dialog is displayed asking you if you trust the program. Please confirm that you do. Installation proceeds.

13 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 4 INSTALL LICENSE Attention! You may need to run the software with administrator rights, the first time since it needs to access the root directory on your hard drive then, Once the calibration value for Rs is configured you don t need administrator rights on the computer any more. 4.1 Custom License Data File The first time you run the software it will request you to select the custom license file to load: Select your custom license data file that you have somewhere accessible by the computer and click on Open. It will be copied into a hidden directory on the computer. 4.2 Install License When the custom license data file has been loaded the following dialog box is displayed: We recommend you to install the license right away. There is however an evaluation period in case you can t do that right now, see chapter Click on the Install License button.

14 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 2. Enter the license key that you have received. 3. We recommend that you have the computer connected to the internet before next step because then the license can be installed automatically. If that is not possible you will have to data to us and we can do the authentication. 4. Click on Install. The software now tries to authenticate the license by contacting our server over the internet: 5. Update user information 6. If this succeeds you are done installing the license and can proceed to chapter 5. If successful, please do not send any license file to us. Click Close to start the program.

15 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 7. If this fails because the computer is not connected to the internet of for some other reason the following dialog box is displayed: 8. If you can t have the computer connected to the internet then click on Yes. The following dialog box is then displayed: Select a directory on a USB stick, CD or other media that you will be able to access from a computer that is connected to the internet.

Send an to software@hotdisk.se with the file as an attachment or open it in Notepad or other editor and copy its content into the text of the When you have received the authenticated license key from us save it into a file and bring it to the computer. 12. In the install license dialog box below click on Load License. 13. Select the.lic file that you have received from us.

Click Close to start the program. 4.3 Evaluation Period Without authenticating the license key, during one month, the TPS system can be verified by measuring and running calculations on the verification steel. During this period the measurement settings are locked to values appropriate for measuring on the verification steel and no calculations are done on experiments with other settings. This is useful if you can t have the computer connected to the internet and you are waiting for an authenticated license key from us.

19 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 5 DETERMINE HARDWARE 5.1 Configure Hardware Connections 1. Make sure the TPS system is connected to the PC and that it is turned ON. The first time a TPS system is connected to the PC, New driver found will be displayed and drivers should be installed automatically for all four RS232 ports. This may take a minute or two. 2. Click on to start the Hot Disk software. A background thread will start scanning for instruments and will display those that it founds on the status bar, at the bottom of the main window. You need however to confirm that that you want to use them and that is easiest to do from the Hardware Configuration window. 3. Click on Bulk, one of the other enabled type buttons in the Experiment type selection dialog below. z 1 4. Click on the File tab and select Hardware Configuration z 1

All found TPS systems, supported baths, furnaces and switches are displayed together with unidentified devices and unused COM ports. 6. If your system does not appear please a) Check that the USB cable is connected b) Check that the TPS system is ON. The displays should be lit. c) You may have to disconnect and reconnect, or connect to another USB port, the USB cable to make sure that Windows has detected the hardware. d) Click on Scan to start a new search. If this doesn t help please an error report, see chapter 0, to software@hotdisk.se and we will help you.

21 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 7. If you have a system with a Resistor Bridge (TPS 1500, TPS 2200, TPS 2500S or TPS 3500) a) Select the corresponding node in the tree view. The right panel changes to the one below: b) Enter the correct Rs from the Test Protocol delivered to you together with your system. 8. Click on OK

23 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 6 MICELLANIOUS SETTINGS Please switch off all screen savers. Screen savers, if enabled, may disrupt the measurement process, and the Hot Disk software will malfunction. Please also switch off all Energy Saving utilities. Make sure that computer does not go into Hibernation mode, and make sure that the Hard disk is not switched off. All these Energy Saving utilities will also disrupt measurement processes, in particular the Schedule measurements function. Please let us know if you have any further questions or requests regarding the software installation. 6.1 Enable VBA in Excel The Hot Disk software uses Excel to export calculations as Excel files. This only works if you have the correct version of Microsoft Office and VBA access is enabled in Excel. To enable VBA access, follow the following procedure. 1. Start Excel 2. Click on the Microsoft icon then on Excel Options

27 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 7 ERROR REPORTING 7.1 Support Wizard Please use the support wizard when assistance is needed. It can provide basic support, contact details to the relevant support team and assist with collecting the information needed for best possible support. Below is a description of what the support wizard can be used for. Here are a few of the tips that it will give you Checking for Updates If there are problems with a software bug, please check if it has been solved in a later version or contact your local Hot Disk representative. By keeping the software updated other improvements and new features will be made available. The complete revision history for the latest released software is in: Update Software With access to the internet, the latest software version can always be downloaded from: Before installing, please make sure that the Hot Disk software is shut down. An update will not require any new license information or similar. Once the software update is completed the program will be ready for use Installation and license problems Distributors usually help installing the software on one computer but it can be installed on a total of five computers using the same license key. This is useful e.g. when replacing the lab computer or to analyse measurements on an office computer or a laptop. Hot Disk AB recommend running the software on computers with screens larger than 20, since this results in better overview and easier-to-read graphs. When installing the software for the first time on a computer, please follow the instructions in the installation manual. It is found in the user s manual binder or can be downloaded from: This document also contains information on how to update the license, e.g. in case extra measurement modules have been acquired Lost measurement data If by mistake files have been deleted, if undesired changes in a batch file have occurred or if a file access error appears, it is possible to access backup files from the latest saved batch files. The default location is C:\HotDiskTPS_7\data\Backup.

28 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) Measurement Problems If unsure how to perform measurements or if the results seem incorrect, please consult this manual first, thereafter the local Hot Disk representative. When contacting the local representative or Hot Disk directly, please provide log files of the error in question, and also the affected measurement file, if possible. Screen dumps are not recommended. Local representatives can be found via the Hot Disk homepage, under the heading CONTACT: Ordering Extra Hardware or Software Modules To acquire additional sensors, accessories or new measurement modules, please contact the local Hot Disk distributor. Local representatives can be found via the Hot Disk homepage, under the heading CONTACT: Software Bugs To examine a software error, a log file is always required. Without it, it is not possible to track the bug or error. Screen dumps are of little use unless the problem is an error in the user interface (e.g. data field missing or misplaced). In the support wizard, add the log file under Selected files to send to support, see below. Another option is to select the Experiment file and check Include matching log files. See instructions in the support wizard.

29 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) To report a problem that occurred in a previous session and include the corresponding log file: Figure 1. Select log file to include The icons indicate if the log file contains errors, warnings, temperature readings or not.

31 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 7.2 Fatal error If a fatal error occurs, the following dialog box will appear: Figure 2. Fatal Error Please click support and follow the instructions. If Cancel is selected, the software will most likely terminate. Starting it up again will be required before proceeding with new measurements. 7.3 Other Errors If a recoverable error occurs, a dialog box will provide information on how to solve it. An example is seen below: Figure 3. Other Error If these instructions do not resolve the relevant problem, please click on the Support button.

33 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 8 HANDLE LICENSE 8.1 Update user information When the license was installed, it was possible to adjust the user information to be displayed on the splash screen, see chapter 13, point 5. This can also be done in the about form. 1. Click on the question mark at the top right corner of the main window and select About Hot Disk: version and license info: The following dialog box is then displayed:

36 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 8.2 Update License or Switch to another license If a client license is changed, for example if they have bought one more module or have upgraded from TPS500 to TPS 2500S, the old license data file needs to be deleted and a new one installed and authenticated using a new matching license key. Do also follow this procedure if a distributors license was used for testing and you what to switch to the clients license. 1. Click on the question mark at the top right corner of the main window and select About Hot Disk: version and license info: The following dialog box is then displayed: 2. Click on the Delete License button.

37 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 3. The following dialog box is then displayed. 4. Click on Yes. The removal is confirmed by a dialog box. 5. Restart the software and install the new/other license as described in chapter 4.

39 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 8.3 License problems In some cases the license data file needs to be removed manually from the hidden directory where it is located. To view the hidden directory in Windows File Explorer and remove the license, proceed as below: Alternative 1: Click View, tap Show/hide in the menu, and check the small box before Hidden items in the sub-list.

40 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) Alternative 2: Open This PC, click View and select Options. In the Folder Options window, choose View, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then click OK.

42 Installation Instruction for Hot Disk TPS (44) 9 HARDWARE CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS There are problems with some earlier NI-Serial version. If you don t have at least NI-Serial 4.1 you should upgrade. You can download the latest version from or download NI-Serial 4.1 installer from our web server: If you still have problems after installing NI-Serial 4.1, you may need to open Windows Device Manager and uninstall drivers before reconnecting the USB cable, see instructions below. It may look a little different depending on your Windows version. 1. Open the control panel by clicking on the Start button and on the Settings.

Click on Ports (COM & LPT). Right-click on the line of one of the ports that needs to be changed and uninstall. 5. Repeat this for all ports of the USB-RS232 hub.
