7 Chapter 1: ocs_monitor 1.3 This description applies to ocs_monitor version The ocs_monitor probe monitors the health and performance of Microsoft Office Communications Server by gathering information about the audio and video quality of network media. Additionally, the probe collects usage information (CDR) about Office Communications Server, which helps you to calculate the return on investment of your deployment and also enables you to plan future growth of your deployment. Version Date What's New? 1.31 October 2011 Initial Release What is Microsoft Office Communication Server? Office Communications Server 2007 is a software platform for communicating with people. It gives you several communications options from existing Microsoft products, like Outlook. Office Communications Server 2007 delivers streamlined communications for users so they can find and communicate with the right person, right now, from the applications they use most. Without expensive infrastructure and network upgrades, you can deliver streamlined communications, including software-powered VoIP (voice over IP), Web conferencing, and enterprise instant messaging, while maintaining operational control. Office Communications Server 2007 builds on the foundation of presence and Instant Messaging, federated communications, and remote call control delivered by Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 and Microsoft Office Communicator The ocs_monitor probe is delivered with a default configuration with a selected set of profiles to be monitored. The profiles are grouped in seven predefined groups or categories, as follows: 1. Eventlogs: Monitor Windows event logs for specific event contents. 2. Files: Monitor specific files. 3. Filesystems: Monitor file systems for specific patterns. 4. Performance counters: Monitor performance counters for QoE Monitoring Server, CDR Service, LDM Memory, Mediation Server etc; 5. Processes: Monitor different processes running on the system. 6. Services: Monitor OCS related services. 7. WMI: Monitor specific WMI classes. Each of these categories can contain several profiles. The ocs_monitor probe is delivered with a default configuration with a selected set of profiles to be monitored, but you can also define your own profiles. 9 ocs_monitor GUI ocs_monitor GUI The ocs_monitor probe is configured by double-clicking the probe in the NMS Manager, which opens the ocs_monitor window for probe configuration. The ocs_monitor window consists of left and right panes, a menu bar and a status bar. To know more about the probe you can refer the online help. Press F1 to open the help file. Alternatively, you can select Help Show Help or click the Help button at the bottom of the ocs_monitor window. The left pane The left-pane contains a node called ocs_monitor. The ocs_monitor node contains seven group types, useful for logically classifying different profiles. Chapter 1: ocs_monitor 1.3 9

10 ocs_monitor GUI The groups types are: Eventlogs Files Filesystems Performance counters Processes Services WMI When you select a ocs_monitor node, all profiles appear in the right pane. Selecting one of the groups, the profiles sorted under that group are listed. The probe is delivered with a default configuration with a selected set of profiles to be monitored. However, you can also define your own profiles. Each of the profiles can contain several counters. The right pane This pane lists the profiles defined. Selecting the ocs_monitor node in the left pane, all profiles defined appears in the right pane. 10 ocs_monitor Guide

11 ocs_monitor GUI Selecting one of the groups under the ocs_monitor server node in the left pane, the profiles sorted under that group are listed. The following information is displayed for each profile record: The name of the profile. If the profile is enabled or not. The last status message received from the counter. Note: If the status message contains a message such as "...an instance name needs to be specified", it is necessary to select an instance for the profile counter. To select an instance: 1. Right click a profile record. 2. Select Properties from the shortcut menu. This opens the properties dialog. Chapter 1: ocs_monitor

12 ocs_monitor GUI 3. Select the Performance counter tab. 4. Select object and its associated instance. 5. Click OK. For some of the counters, an instance can not be selected before there is any traffic on the interface. If all profiles are listed (the Ocs_monitor Server node is selected in the left pane), the group name for the different profiles is also shown in the list. Icons The icon next to the profile name in the list indicates the profile status. Immediately after a restart, there is no icon at all during a short initialization period. After a few seconds, the status for the profile is shown. The following table contains icons and its description. Icon Description This indicates an active profile, but no data is yet sampled. The sample period is defined in profile s property dialog. This indicates an inactive profile. After the first sample period, defined in the profile s property dialog, one of the following icons should appear. Green means OK (Clear). Other colours means the threshold defined for the profile is breached, and the color reflects the severity level: Information Warning Minor Major Critical 12 ocs_monitor Guide

13 ocs_monitor GUI Right-clicking in the right pane Right-clicking in the right pane opens a shortcut menu offering a set of options. Selecting the Ocs_monitor Server node in the left pane, the right-click shortcut menu lets you: Delete the selected profile (Delete). Edit the properties for the selected profile (Properties). Selecting one of the groups in the left pane, the right-click shortcut menu lets you: Add new profiles for the selected group (New). Delete the selected profile (Delete). Edit the properties for the selected profile (Properties). The same menu opens when you select a profile record in the right pane and right click it. The Menu bar The menu bar, located in the upper part of the window, contains some options and tools to be used to manage the probe. File Chapter 1: ocs_monitor

14 ocs_monitor GUI This menu entry contains two options: Save Select this menu entry to save any configuration modifications you have done. Note that you can also save the configuration modifications by pressing the Ctrl +S keys. Exit Use this option to exit the configuration tool. If you have modified the configuration, the following confirmation message appears to save the changes before exiting the configuration tool. Probe 14 ocs_monitor Guide

15 ocs_monitor GUI This menu entry contains four options: Activate This option is enabled only when the probe is stopped (by using the Deactivate option, see below). It starts the probe again, and the status Started will be displayed in the Status bar. Deactivate This option is enabled only when the probe is activated (the status Started is displayed in the Status bar.). It stops the probe, and the status Stopped is displayed in the Status bar. Restart This option stops and then starts the probe again. Options Help Use this option to set the log level of the probe. This sets the level of details written to the probe s log file. We recommend to log as little as possible during normal operation, to minimize disk consumption. You may temporarily increase the log level for debugging purposes. 16 ocs_monitor GUI Show help Select this menu entry to launch the Nimsoft Probe on-line documentation, pointing directly to the section describing this probe. You may also launch this documentation by pressing the F1 key or by clicking the Help button in the lower right corner. About This option opens a small window displaying the probe configurator version number and the date it was built. The Status bar The status bar located in the lower part of the application window. The status bar offers the following information: The name and the version number of the probe. The status of the probe: Started or Stopped. 16 ocs_monitor Guide

17 Adding or editing a Profile Adding or editing a Profile Perform the following steps to add a new profile for a group: 1. Select one of the groups in the left pane. 2. Right-click in the right pane and click New from the shortcut menu. The properties dialog appears. To edit an existing profile, double click a profile record. The properties dialog appears. The properties dialog for the profiles has three tabs. General and Counter are the two common tabs for all the types of profiles, while the third tab is group specific tab. The General tab The General lets you define the general properties for the profile. This tab is valid for all types of profiles. The following table describes fields of the General tab: Field Description Name The name of the profile. Give a descriptive name to the profile. Chapter 1: ocs_monitor

18 Adding or editing a Profile Description Sample data every Startup delay Enabled Add a short description of the profile in this field. This description is not shown in the list of profiles in the right pane. Specify the profile s poll interval (how often the profile collects data). Valid units are seconds, minutes, hours or days. If you want a delay before the profile starts polling after the profile has been activated, you can specify this delay here. Valid units are seconds, minutes, hours or days. Select this check box to enable the profile. If enabled, the profile samples data at the poll interval specified. The Counters tab The Counters tab lists the counters available for the object being monitored by the profile. This tab is valid for all the types of profiles. The following table describes fields of the Counters tab: Field Description Counters Lists the counters available for the object. 18 ocs_monitor Guide

19 Adding or editing a Profile Thresholds Remove Send QoS Selecting one counter, you may define one or more thresholds for the counter. Select a counter in the list and click the Add button to set or modify the threshold value and severity for the selected counter. The counters available depends on categoy: Click this button to remove the selected threshold. This button is enabled only when a threshold is selected in the threshold list. If you select this check box, the probe sends QoS data on the counters defined in this profile. The following table describes counters for different group types: Object Type Available Counters EventLog Files Filesystems Performance counters Processes Services Wmi EventFound (true/false) NumberOfEventsFound Changed : seconds since file was changed Created : seconds since file was created NotFound (true / false) Directories: Number of directories in the directory specified. FileAgeNewest: age in seconds of the newest file in the directory. FileAgeOldest: age in seconds of the oldest file in the directory. Files: Number of files in the directory specified. NotFound (true / false). This is set to true is critical for default Filesystem profiles. TotalSize: size of all the files in the directory specified, in bytes. The counters available depends on the object (Object/Instance) selected. A number of counters are available for the process selected. The counters are common for all processes. One counter (State) can be selected for the service selected. The counters available depends on the object (Namespace/claass/instance) selected. Chapter 1: ocs_monitor

20 Adding or editing a Profile Add : Click this button to define a threshold value and associated severity level for the selected counter (see above). Note that you may define several thresholds. The Eventlog tab The Eventslog tab lets you define the log file to be monitored by the profile. This tab is valid for the Eventlog group s profiles only. 20 ocs_monitor Guide

You can specify the name of a computer to be searched for in entries in the log file. You can specify the name of a source to be searched for in entries in the log file. You can select the severity to be searched for in entries in the log file. You can specify the name of a user to be searched for in entries in the log file. You can specify the category to be searched for in entries in the log file. You can specify an event ID to be searched for in entries in the log file. 22 Adding or editing a Profile The File tab The File tab is valid for the file group s profiles only. This tab lets you define the file to be monitored by the profile. The following table describes field of the Files tab: Field File Description Browse for a specific file to monitor. The probe checks if the file is created or changed. 22 ocs_monitor Guide

23 Adding or editing a Profile The Filesystem tab The Filesystem is valid for the Filesystem group s profiles only. This tab lets you define the File system to be monitored by the profile. The following table describes field of the Filesystem tab: Field Directory Pattern Include Subdirectories Description Specify the filesystem to be monitored for a specific pattern. The probe will check that the directory exists, the size of the directory and age of the oldest and newest file. It can also check that a file exists. Specify the pattern (e.g. the name of a file or a regular expression) to be searched for within the filesystem specified. Select this checkbox to search within sub directories of the base directory. 24 Adding or editing a Profile The Performance counter tab The Performance counter tab is valid for the Performance counter group s profiles only. This tab lets you define the performance object to be monitored by the profile. The following table describes field of the Performance counter tab: Field Description Object Description Instance Select the performance object to be monitored. The drop-down list lets you select among all performance objects available on the host. This is a read-only field containing a description of the selected performance object. Some of the objects may have more than one instance on the system. If so, the Instance field is enabled, letting you select an instance.
