3 1. Introduction 1.1 System Requirements Windows 98 / ME / 2000 / XP / Vista USB 2.0 Host 1.2 Multilingual Support English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Portuguese & Japanese 1.3 Disk Partitioning UFD Utility can be used to partition a flash drive into two separate partitions. By default, the flash drive has only one partition. This partition is known as Public Area. Public Area Default setting where there are no security restrictions. Users can use the entire memory area as Public Area. Security Area All data in the Security Area is protected by a password. 2
4 Public Area + Security Area All data stored in the Security Area is protected by a password. However, the Public Area has no restrictions in access. 1.4 Note Please be aware that some utility functions will format the flash drive after executing the UFDUtility.exe. Please backup all flash drive data before executing the program. 3
5 2. Icon Descriptions After executing UFDUtility.exe, the following toolbar will appear. Close Button Minimize to system tray and stay active Security Folder Bookmark Manager PC Lock Manager Autorun Manager Security Manager Boot Manager Partition Manager 4
6 2.1 Partition Manager Partition flash drive into public area only or public area + secure area. It allows user to modify the disk volume label and password for security area. 2.2 Boot Manager Format the flash drive as a bootable disk, either USB-ZIP or USB-HDD. 2.3 Security Manager Enables user to enter password and login to the security area. 2.4 Autorun Manager Create a virtual CD-ROM partition with the Autorun feature. This tool also supports ISO image file making. 2.5 PC Lock Manager Lock PC to prevent unauthorized use for set time after flash drive is unplugged. User can define PC lock time and text/picture to be displayed during PC lock time. 2.6 Bookmark Manager Copy favourites from Internet Explorer to the flash drive. User can then use the flash drive to browse favourite websites on any Windows Internet Explorer platform. 2.7 Security Folder If the flash drive hasn t been partitioned into a secure partition, the Security Folder can be used to create password protected, hidden, compressed folders. When the user moves any file to the Security Folder, it is automatically compressed to save space. 2.8 Note Whenever Partition Manager, Boot Manager or Autorun Manager is executed, the UFDUtility.exe will be automatically copied to the public area for user convenience. 5
7 3. UFD Utility Operation 3.1 Partition Manager Click Partition Manager on the UFD Utility bar. Partition Manager window will pop up as below. Select partition capacity by dragging this line Use keyboard (,,, ) or mouse to adjust public or security area capacity. The minimum capacity for public area is 5MB. Enter new password (maximum is 8 characters) Enter the password hint User may modify the disk volume label for each area (maximum is 15 characters) Execute by pressing Start 6
8 A warning message prompts user to backup flash drive data before partitioning. Press OK. Re-plugging flash drive is necessary after formatting is complete. 7
9 3.2 Boot Manager Configure Boot Disk Click Boot Manager on the UFD Utility bar Boot-Up window will pop up as below. Select the booting file folder made by users User can modify the disk volume label (maximum is 11 characters) User can select booting mode, USB Zip or USB HDD. Please select the same mode in the BIOS first boot device on PC. NB: USB HDD booting is supported under Windows 98 ONLY. 8
10 3.2.2 Making a Boot Disk (for Windows 98) Click Boot Manager on the UFD Utility bar Boot-Up window will pop up as below. User can modify the disk volume label (maximum is 11 characters) Two options for booting type Two options for source of system files Select the booting file folder made by users User can select either Internal MS-DOS system files or DOS system files located at: in Windows 98. If user selects Internal MS-DOS system files, then UFD Utility will copy command.com and io.sys from the Windows 98 Command folder to the flash drive public area. If user selects DOS system files located at:, then UFD Utility will copy command.com and io.sys from user specified folder to the flash drive public area. Press Start. 9
11 Only the public area is formatted so only data stored in the public area will be erased. A warning message prompts user to backup flash drive data before formatting. Press OK. Re-plugging flash drive is necessary after formatting is complete. 10
12 3.2.3 Making a Boot Disk (for Windows ME / 2000 / XP / Vista) Click Boot Manager on the UFD Utility bar Boot-Up window will pop up as below. User can modify the disk volume label (maximum is 11 characters) USB Zip option only Select the booting file folder made by users User can only select DOS system files located at: when using Windows ME, 2000, XP or Vista platform. UFD Utility will copy command.com and io.sys from user specified folder to the flash drive public area. Press Start. 11
13 Only the public area is formatted so only data stored in the public area will be erased. A warning message prompts user to backup flash drive data before formatting. Press OK. Re-plugging flash drive is necessary after formatting is complete. 12
14 3.3 Security Manager Login to Security Area Click Security Manager on the UFD Utility bar. Login/out window will pop up as below. Current status, Logged out will show in red. If previously entered, the Hint will be displayed to recall password if necessary. Enter the password to log into the security area. 13
15 Figure 3.31, Figure 3.32 and the removable disk window will pop up after successful login Logout from Security Area Double click icon in the system tray at the bottom right hand corner of your screen. The Login/out window will pop up. Current status, Logged in will show in green. Click Logout Removable disk Window will change from security area to public area after logout success. Only public area is accessible after logout from the security area. 14
16 3.4 Autorun Manager Start from Source File Preparation Prepare Source Files in advance, including Autorun.exe, Autorun.inf and Autorun.ico (optional) Example of Source Files Example of Autorun.exe 15
17 Example of Autorun.inf Click Autorun Manager on the UFD Utility bar. Autorun Manager window will pop up as below. Click on the button shown below to select the directory path where the source files were saved. Select the directory of the source files 16
18 Select the directory path where the source files were saved and click OK Select the directory path where you want to save the ISO File. Enter a name for the ISO File and click Save. NB: DO NOT save the ISO FILE to the same directory as the SOURCE FILES or Windows Vista ROOT directory. 17
19 Enter a volume label for the CD-ROM and click OK Build ISO complete window pops up, click OK. Click Burn to begin burning ISO file. A warning message prompts user to backup all the data before creating new partition. Click OK Burn ISO file completed. Click OK and then re-plug flash drive. After re-plugging the flash drive, two disks will appear in My Computer. Compact Disk and Removable Disk. The virtual CDROM has been partitioned successfully. 18

21 3.4.2 Start from Existing ISO Source File Use an existing ISO file to create a virtual CDROM for Autorun. Click Autorun Manager on the UFD Utility bar. Autorun Manager window will pop up as below. Click here to locate the ISO file Click ISO file browse button to locate ISO file. 20
22 Select the ISO file. Click Burn to begin burning ISO file. 21
23 A warning message prompts user to backup all the data before creating new partition. Click OK Burn ISO file completed. Click OK and then re-plug flash drive. After re-plugging the flash drive, two disks will appear in My Computer. Compact Disk and Removable Disk. The virtual CDROM has been partitioned successfully. 22
24 3.4.3 Restore To Default Single Partition Setting Click Autorun Manager on the UFD Utility bar. Autorun Manager window will pop up as below. 23
25 Check Single Partition option and click Burn to restore original partition. Check Single Partition option A warning message prompts user to backup all the data before creating new partition. Click OK 24
26 Burn completed. Click OK and then re-plug flash drive. After re-plugging the flash drive, only one Removable Disk will appear in My Computer. 25
27 3.5 PC Lock Manager Click PC Lock Manager on the UFD Utility bar. PC Lock window will pop up as below. Select lock time from Lock interval drop down box. When the flash drive is unplugged, PC Lock Manager will lock the PC for the time period selected in the lock interval. Users can select Execute and shut down after selecting lock interval time. When the flash drive is unplugged, PC will automatically shut down. When the PC is restarted, PC Lock Manager will lock the PC for the time period selected in the lock interval. Users can select text or a wallpaper screen saver to display during the lock interval. The wallpaper picture must be a JPG, GIF or BMP file. Users can select location of wallpaper as centre or stretch to the screen size. Users can set the speed of wallpaper change. 26
28 After setting and pressing <Start>, PC will be locked immediately when you unplug flash drive. Re-plug the same flash drive at any time to un-lock PC. This function does not support Fixed Disk Type. 27
29 3.6 Bookmark Manager Import My Favourites Click Bookmark Manager on the UFD Utility bar. UBookmark window will pop up as below. Click Import My Favourites to copy My Favourites directory to flash drive. After completion, remove the flash drive. A Favourites folder will be created on the flash drive Select PC Bookmark or Flash Drive Bookmark Click Bookmark Manager on the UFD Utility bar. UBookmark window will pop up as below. 28
30 Select PC Bookmark or Flash Disk Bookmark in the Bookmark Manager window. Internet Explorer will load the selected Bookmarks after Bookmark Manager window is closed How to use PC Bookmark or Flash Drive Bookmark Select Run Internet Explorer after the button is selected Select Run Internet Explorer after the button is selected and Internet Explorer will automatically run after the Bookmark Manager is closed. NB: Before the flash drive is removed, open Bookmark Manager and select Use PC Bookmark. 29
31 3.7 Security Folder Click Security Folder on the UFD Utility bar Disk Login window will pop up as below. Default password is blank. Leave password field empty. Click Login to enter Security Folder. 30
32 3.7.1 Hidden Area Data Access After logging in to hidden area, user can create, copy or delete folders or files. Files added to the Security Folder will be automatically compressed to save space. Copy, cut or delete files. Closing the Security Folder window will automatically logout of hidden area. To log back in to hidden area, click Security Folder on the UFD Utility bar. 31
33 3.7.2 Create or Change Security Folder Password Under Management tab, select Change Password. Enter New Password and Hint. Click OK After user has logged out or closed Security Folder, a hidden file called vfbest.vfo will be created in a folder called vfzip in the public area. This compressed Zip file can only be accessed after logging in to Security Folder. NB: DO NOT delete vfbest.vfo. This will delete all data in Security Folder. 32
