Portabee GO Mobile 3D Printer Portabee 3D Software & Support Romscraj Manufacturing & Engineering
A. Software Package Please download the following pre configured software package for your operating system: Windows Mac CURA and Pronterface are fantastic open source 3D printing software solutions that we love to use with Portabee GO. More information can be found here: CURA 3D Model Preparation PRONTERFACE Printer Control
B. Set up & Unfolding 1. Deploying your Portabee GO A demonstration video of deployment can be found here: Unfold your Portabee GO according to the following visual instructions. a. Your fully folded Portabee GO from the underside:
b. Turn the lead screw in the extruder arm to reposition the X rail and extruder - Manually turn the leadscrew to move the X rail and extruder -
- Move X rail and extruder by turning the lead screw - - Position of X rail and extruder after turning lead screw -
c. Move the extruder such that it is cleared for extruder arm rotation - Position of extruder before repositioning - - Position of extruder after repositioning -
d. Rotate the extruder arm counter clockwise until the maximum allowable angle - Rotate the extruder arm carefully to max range -
e. Turn the lead screw in the extruder arm to reposition the X rail and extruder assembly - Position of X rail and extruder before turning lead screw - - Position of X rail and extruder after turning lead screw -
f. Slide the extruder arm to your left until the X rail and extruder are beyond the main body g. Rotate the extruder arm clockwise until it is upright
h. Locate the wing nut near the lower part of the extruder arm i. Secure the extruder arm by tightening the wing nut
j. These wing nut positions after tightening are acceptable
k. These wing nut positions after tightening are not acceptable
l. Turn the lead screw in the extruder arm to lower the X rail and extruder assembly to the middle of the arm: - Position of X rail and extruder before turning lead screw - - Position of X rail and extruder after turning lead screw -
1.2 Your deployed Portabee GO should now look like the following
2. Connecting your Portabee GO to PC/MAC 2.1 Locate the Micro B connector on your Portabee GO. 2.2 Connect your Portabee GO to a PC/MAC using the USB A to Micro B cable provided.
3. Powering on your Portabee GO 3.1 Locate the power input connector on your Portabee GO. 3.2 Connect your Portabee GO to an electrical outlet using the power cord (with adaptor) provided.
C. Software Set up 1. Installing the software MAC Drag the PortabeeGO_Cura file into your Applications directory Run the App Choose Other > Next > Portabee_GO_Mobile_3D_Printer during first setup WIN Run "Cura_for_PortabeeGO_Setup.exe" Run "Pronterface_for_PortabeeGO_Setup.exe" The software is ready and configured for your GO
2. Drivers No drivers are needed for MAC, and CURA will auto detect connection details for you. MAC If CURA has trouble finding the device, you can do the following: Open a terminal (Go > Utilities > Terminal) and enter: ls /dev/cu.* Look for a connected device that says dev/cu.usbxxxxx (or similar). The dev/cu.usbxxxxx (or similar) device is your 3D printer WIN Open Device Manager and look for Other devices Look under Other devices You should see Unknown device Locate the Drivers folder in the software package unzip location Right click Unknown device and choose Update Driver Software Select Browse my computer for driver software Click Browse to specify the location which contains the driver Windows will install the driver. Device Manager should show Arduino Mega 2560 (COM#) under Ports (COM & LPT) Take note of COM#. This will be used later for the printer controller software
3. Printing Temperatures Printing temperatures are as follows: 1.25 GO 190 Degrees C 1.0 GO 210 Degrees C 1.25 GO round extruder (2015+) 1.0 GO square extruder (2014) There is new start.gcode for 210 degrees in the folder GO_1.0_Model MAC The temperature is set in the Basic > Printing temperature (C) area of CURA. The temperature is set in Pronterface in the Heat: 190 [ SET ] area. WIN * Temps are pre configured to 190 degrees with software install
3. Pre Loading PLA Filament 3.1 Loosen the hex screw (right turn) and then push your filament through the drive gear assembly. Ensure that the filament is within the drive gear of the extruder. - Feeding PLA filament into extruder - The hex screw with the spring assembly can be turned to tighten or loosen the grip. If during printing the filament is slipping, the gear is too loose: turn left to tighten If the extruder motor is struggling during a print, and making clunking sounds, the gear is too tight, turn right to loosen.
5.1 Printing Process for MAC MAC Start up CURA by clicking on the shortcut Press the rounded " Load " button Locate the " SampleObject.stl " file Press the rounded " Print via USB " button Press the small " Connect " button Click the small " Print " button to commence the 3D print proper Your Portabee GO will begin to heat up, " Temperature: X " will show increasing values The print will begin as the nozzle temperature becomes within range.
5.2 Printing Process for WINDOWS WIN CURA Start up CURA Press the rounded " Load " button Locate the " SampleObject.stl " file File > Save GCode PRONTERFACE Start up Pronterface Enter " " next to the Connect button, you can find COM# in Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT) Press " Connect " If the console just sits at "Connecting...", press reset until connect (Some windows environments contain a small bug that requires this step) Press " Load File " Locate the saved gcode file from the CURA section above Make sure the temperature is " Heat: 190 " Press " Set " Wait for the nozzle heat is ranging within degrees Press " Print " The 3D print will begin.
D. Software Reference 1. Pronterface Settings 1.1 Pronterface is used for controlling Portabee GO. Pronterface is open source software that is produced by Kliment. You can view more info here: Here are recommended settings for Pronterface:
Do not use the Z-home button in Pronterface Portabee GO has its own auto-leveling for the Z axis

E. Troubleshooting Guide 1. Extrusion Troubles If the melted filament doesn t seem to flow out of the nozzle smoothly or flows out unusually slow without the help of your pushing of the filament, adjust the grip of the drive gear and bearing. This can be done so by tightening or loosening the countersunk screw a little. By tightening the screw, the gap between the drive gear and bearing will increase. Loosening the screw will cause the gap to decrease. You must find the optimal gap that will provide the correct pressure and allow the filament to grip and extrude well. - Check the tightness of the extrusion mechanism -
2. Auto Levelling If the nozzle isn t probing the points well and continues to go right into the depressed points, check if the nozzle tip is clean. You want to use tissue paper and a pair of pliers to carefully remove all filament from the nozzle tip before the GO does its auto levelling routine. The nozzle should not be oozing filament before the auto levelling, so retract the filament a bit, and let the extruder sit for a few seconds and then do a quick clean of the tip. For perfect auto level accuracy, a clean nozzle tip is the way to go.
Customer Service & Support A.
