1 Windows Tips and Tricks This document contains many of the hidden features of Windows 7 to assist in making many tasks accomplished in Windows much easier. Feel free to distribute this document.

3 Set up Display and Jump Lists. 1. Right click on the Start ICON and click Properties. 4. Click Apply and OK button. 2. Click Customize Button. Search 1. Use this to do a search on any files, applications, etc 3. Change Number of recent programs to display to 30. Change Number of recent items to display in Jump Lists to 40. Click OK.
4 Add key applications above the line 1. See example below. You can Pin to Start Menu applications to start menu or to taskbar. Calculator It has many more functions to include calculating Mortgages, Vehicle Lease, Fuel Economy, unit conversion, Date Calculation, etc Example below: Calculating Mortgage.
5 Jump Lists It allows you to see the most recent files used by each Microsoft Applications. 1. Right click on any application located on your Menu Taskbar. See EXCEL Example below. Example below: New file is now located on the Pinned list. 2. You can also Pin your favorite files to either the Display or Jump Lists. Notice the Pin shows up next to every file listed in either the Display or Jump Lists. Just click the Pin and it will be appear in you Pinned list.
6 Libraries It allows the End User to setup a library of folders at one location. Example: I can create a single library with more than one folder from different locations. 3. Click the Include a folder to add a new folder. 1. Open Windows Explorer by holding down the Window key and then pressing E. Click on Libraries. 4. See Example below. 2. Right Click in the Library section of Explorer to create a new Library. Click New and Library Example: Type Test within the Libraries. 5. Click the 1 Location and the Test Library Locations box opens. 6. Click the Add button if you want another folder added.
7 Shake Grab any active window in the title bar and shake it back and forth and the rest of the active windows will minimize. Shake the same window again and all minimized windows will maximize again. See Example below. All other windows are minimized after Shake was done. 7. Example: I now have two folders saved in my Test Library. Peek 1. Hover in the lower left hand corner and it will minimize all windows. All windows will stay minimized if you left click on the lower left hand corner. All windows will reappear if you left click on the lower left hand corner. Snap Snap will allow you to snap a window either right or left of a Monitor. 1. Two methods can be used to snap a window. One is move the window as far right as possible and it will snap at 50% or hold down the Windows key plus the right arrow. 2. Same result when moving a window to the left, except Windows Key plus the left arrow. See example below with a dual monitor.
8 Snipping Tool Snipping tool will allow you to take a screen capture of anything displayed on one or more monitors. 3. See Example below. You have the option to paste to word, PowerPoint, etc 1. To access the snipping tool, press the Window key and type Snipping. Click the Snipping Tool application and then capture any part of the viewing monitor or monitors. 4. You can send an too. See Example below. 2. Click and drag anywhere to crop a portion of your screen, then release to capture the image. Sticky Notes Sticky Notes allows you to put sticky notes on your computer. You can minimize, move, etc 1. To access the Sticky Notes tool, press the Window key and type Sticky. Click Sticky Notes on Start Menu. Example below.
9 1. To access the PSR tool, press the Window key and type psr. Click psr.exe on Start Menu to bring up the application. Example Sticky Note 2. Click the Start Record. 3. Now it s recording you re every move. 4. Click the Stop Record after you ve finished. 5. Another window appears asking for a name and a place to save the file. See below. Problems Steps Recorder (PSR) PSR is a feature that enables users to record their interactions with an application and provide a detailed screen-by-screen view with accompanying information.
10 6. It displays as a Zip folder. Our example: Testing.zip. Attach this file to an and send it out. File is inside this folder. Name of the file displays the year, month, day, hour, and minute you stopped recording. See example below. 7. Double click the file to open. You can do any three below to review. Quick Save As F12 Key: Save As for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc This works in many Microsoft Applications Adjust Taskbar Buttons 1. Right-click on the Taskbar and click Properties. 1. To save a document or file using Save As, just press the F12 key and you will be presented with the Save As dialog box. 2. There are three different choices. Type 1: Always combine, hide labels (Default), Type 2: Combine when toolbar is full, and Type 3: Never combine. We ll choose Never combine with this example. Adding folders to Favorites Frequently accessed folders can be added to favorites in Windows Explorer 3. Click Never combine, click Apply and click OK. 1. Click and Drag any folder to favorites until you see a message box saying Create link in Favorites. Release click and this folder will always be available in Windows Explorer as a Favorite. Note that if you drag the folder over another folder, it may move that folder instead of adding a favorite.
11 2. See that the Music folder is now a part of the Favorites list. Scroll All Open Windows Use Windows Key plus Tab to view all open Windows. Stop on the window you want to view. 1. Hold down the Windows key and then press Tab to tab through open windows.
