2 History Windows XP is a line of proprietary operating systems developed by Microsoft for use on general-purpose computer systems, including home and business desktops, notebook computers, and media centers. The letters "XP" stand for experience. XP is the successor to both Windows 2000 and Windows Me, and is the first consumer-oriented operating system produced by Microsoft to be built on the Windows NT kernel and architecture. Windows XP was first released on October 25, 2001, and over 400 million copies are in use, according to a January 2006 estimate by an IDC analyst.[3] It is succeeded by Windows Vista, which was released to volume license customers on November 8, 2006, and worldwide to the general public on January 30, 2007.

The bad: You can install XP on only one machine; piddling discounts for additional PC licenses; nags you to sign up for Passport Web account; multiple-user login screens are often redundant; heavy system requirements. User Rating 2 out of 10: Pros: improved Remote desktop connection. Other than that, its the same windows with fancy names, worse outlook and useless heavy graphics that slow down the machine. Security: Microsoft sucks when it comes to security. Every other day they find a hole in the operating system. The original version had several security concerns and then they provided with service pack 2, which really added to the miseries of the user. It made previously stable programs non-functional. Speed: Its firewall made an already slow operating system way too slow. You run your computer for a few days, it gets slower and slower and ultimately you have to reboot the machine. "The best Windows yet." March 11, 2004 Pros: Ease of use unequaled by previous versions of Windows. Stylish interface. Extremely reliable; it's never crashed on me and it's never had the "blue screen of death" (as Apple likes to scare people with).
