5 1 Before You Begin This section describes the following: Supported Platforms on page 3 Hardware Requirements on page 3 Installation Files on page 3 Supported Platforms The elements of basic VMware structure must be implemented prior to deploying the Dell SonicWALL IBR Virtual Appliance. Dell SonicWALL IBR Virtual Appliance runs on the following VMware platforms: ESXi 4.1 Installable and vcenter Server 4.1 ESXi 4.0 Update 1 Installable and later with vcenter Server 4.0 Update 1 and later ESXi 4.0 Installable and vcenter Server 4.0 Use the vsphere client to import the image and configure the virtual settings. Hardware Requirements Following are the minimum hardware requirements for the Dell SonicWALL IBR Virtual Appliance: 40 GB Thick provisioned hard disk space Note that if thick provisioning is used, the OVA image for the Dell SonicWALL IBR Virtual Appliance specifically allocates 40 GB on the virtual disk and cannot be altered. 2 GB RAM 1 CPU Backup storage: network (NAS) or local (virtual disk) Installation Files The Dell SonicWALL IBR Virtual Appliance image file is available for download from < For a fresh install, the Open Virtual Appliance (OVA) file with the following file name format is available for import and deployment to your ESXi server: IBRv1.0.0.x.ova Note: Do not rename the OVA file. Updater File For a software update, a file with the following file name format is available from < IBRv-1.x.x.x.signed.sh Note: Do not rename the updater file. The updater file is uploaded to the Miscellaneous Setting/Upload Patch section of the System > Administration > Upgrade page on the appliance management interface of your existing Dell SonicWALL Intelligent Backup and Recovery deployment. Users already running Dell SonicWALL CDP appliances will need to use the updater file. 3

6 2 Installing Dell SonicWALL IBR Virtual Appliance The Dell SonicWALL IBR Virtual Appliance is installed by deploying an OVA file to your ESX/ESXi server. Each OVA file contains all software components related to Dell SonicWALL Intelligent Backup and Recovery. You can deploy the OVA files as needed for your Dell SonicWALL Intelligent Backup and Recovery environment. Deploy the OVA file by using the VMware vsphere client, which comes with Esx(i). For vsphere, point a browser to your ESXi server, and click on Download vsphere Client. About Thick vs Thin Provisioning When you deploy an OVA file on your ESXi server you have option of choosing thick or thin provisioning. Thick provisioning pre-allocates the maximum hard disk space for the IBR Virtual Appliance at the time the disk is created, and can consume large amounts of disk space. ESX 4.0 and later can use thin provisioning, which assigns disk space on the fly, and uses storage only equal to the actual amount of data on the disk. Thin provisioning can have an impact on performance if many VM share the same datastore, and each expansion can require extra resources. With thin provisioning, data consumption should be carefully monitored. Installing Dell SonicWALL IBR Virtual Appliance using vsphere To perform a fresh install of the Dell SonicWALL IBR Virtual Appliance using the vsphere client, perform the following steps: 1. Download the IBRv1.0.0.x.ova file from MySonicWALL to a system that is accessible to your ESXi server. Note: Do not rename the OVA file. 4 Dell SonicWALL Intelligent Backup and Recovery Virtual Appliance 1.0 Getting Started Guide
