Initial Comments By now you have either purchased a new computer with Windows 10, or upgraded to Windows 10. o Or have decided you do not wish to upgrade to Windows 10. o The free upgrade ended July 29 th. o Should you wish now to upgrade, you will need to purchase the $100 license. Windows 10 uses some common modern menu icons, but new to Windows. o "Hamburger" Menus (three horizontal lines look like a hamburger and bun. o Ellipsis ( ) menus Are also used to denote that more items are available. Or the name has been clipped. Similar function to using the double caret. o V shaped menu indicating a drop down menu. Microsoft released an Anniversary Update in August. Most have not yet received it. o Perhaps this is because some have experienced difficulties after installing it. o I personally like the additions, though meager as they are to risk some hiccups. And have not noticed any serious problems. I will discuss the few I problems or deficiencies I have seen, and the advantages below. o If you want to install the update before it automatically appears: Download the Media Creation tool. Or follow this link: us/help/12387/windows 10 update history. Windows 10 in the Start Menu All Apps list offers a Get Started App. o Explains many Windows 10 functions and configuration capabilities. o If you have the original version, it is seen after clicking on All Apps. o Once the Anniversary update installs, all Apps are immediately visible without needing to first go to All Apps. Probably the three most important changes for most users are the Start Menu, the Taskbar, and Microsoft Edge, the intended Internet Explorer replacement. o Because the default browser is now Microsoft Edge. o Unless you change the default back to Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, or your favorite. Otherwise, most of Windows 10 operates pretty much like always, including keyboard shortcuts. If you are a truly new Windows computer user, I refer you to the Basic Lessons found on our website for those Basics. 1

Introductory Remarks With Windows 10, Microsoft returns Windows desktop to us. Windows 10 combines the best features of both Windows 7 and 8, but makes them both better by combining features from each. o Searching for programs, apps, and files is easier. Just open the Start menu, and begin typing. Searches files, web, settings, and Windows help. Whether it be a modern App, or a traditionally installed program, they all now open the same, specifically as a window on the desktop. o All windows are fully resizable. o Use them full screen, or any size in between. o Snap as many as four windows/apps to a screen. o Open as many as you want. Windows 10 offers a very customizable Start menu. New to Windows 10 are more universal modern menu icons. o "Hamburger" Menus (three horizontal lines look like a hamburger and bun. o Ellipsis ( ) menus indicate "there is more to see". Used to denote more items are available, or more "path" hidden. o You can publish the video to Facebook, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar Social media sites from Movie Maker and share it this way. Yes, Windows 10 places a lot of information on the Internet. o To allow multiple device users to access documents, addresses, , etc. from any of their devices. o If concerned about keeping your privacy, check out the article on our website under the Select Topics menu, Regain Windows 10 Privacy. Full screen is still available, if that is what you want. o So they can be resized to full screen, or any size just like any other window. o And also they can be snapped to the side, or a quarter of the screen. Windows 10 has a Start menu (which can be made a Start Screen if desired). The Windows 10 Start menu is a hybrid combining the traditional program access of Windows 7 menu, but with availability also of the Windows modern Apps introduced with Windows 8. Windows Update is now automatic and all inclusive. o No more Optional, Recommended, or Critical or other confusing terminology. 2

The Windows 10 Start menu Windows 10 Revisited The Start menu returns to a two pane menu. o The left pane listing items like any other Windows version. o The right pane contains "Tiles", customizable boxes again with a right click. These Tiles are actually shortcuts to the Apps or installed applications. Customize size Turn "Live tiles" on or off. o Initially only Tiles for select modern Apps are present. But Pin to Start any item to that area as a tile, with a right click. Including conventionally installed applications, control panel or its items, such as Devices and Printers, and folders like Documents, Pictures, etc. You may need to use Cortana to find certain system folder components. Remove (Unpin from Start) any item also with a right click. If you prefer the Windows 8 full Start Screen approach, make it full screen by Personalizing. o Go to Start Settings Personalization Or right click on the Desktop screen and choose Personalize Do not choose Personalization from Control Panel! o Turn on "Use Start full screen." o You still have the left side menu by using the hamburger menu top left. In the left column of the initial Start menu are links to Frequently (Most) used programs at the top, and a few important functions at the bottom, including All Apps, Power, and Settings. o Control which items: Settings Personalization Start. Settings, offers many configuration changes without using the Control Panel. o Settings is designed to mimic other smart devices which turn functions on and off by On/Off buttons, rather than the old conventional radio button and check box method. o Control Panel is still there however. For former Windows XP users, Control Panel has changed icon names. Power, offers the Shutdown, Restart, and Sleep functions. o Windows Anniversary update places these menu items as icons in a narrow column just to the left of all the listed Apps and Applications. Expand that also with a hamburger menu at the top. Instead of Pinning, drag any item on the list of Apps displayed on the Start menu onto either the Desktop, or the Taskbar, to place them there. 3

The Windows 10 Start menu (cont'd) The Start button has a Right click Quick Access menu. o Provides access to a non customizable list of commonly desired functions, Control Panel, or frequent accessed Control Panel items, such as: Programs and Features Device Manager Disk Management (to change drive letters, etc.) Shut down options Add Hibernate to Shutdown options via Power Options Choose what power button does Change settings currently unavailable. Then put check in hibernate. Switch users by clicking on the User name at the top left of the Start menu. o Or top of the narrow column of icons with the Anniversary Update. o Windows 8.1 Switch Users was at the top right of the Start screen. Personalization of the Start Menu includes: o Choosing which personal folders and items appear in the left pane. The choices are limited. Go to Start Settings Personalization Start. o Choosing to use Full Screen (like Windows 8) o Make the right pane three, or four Medium sized boxes wide. o Drag the edge of the Start menu toward the top to lengthen the menu. Or towards the right to increase the number of groups displayed horizontally. o In the right hand pane: Move tiles around by dragging. Move groups of tiles up or down by dragging its name. Or the blank area just above the group. Create new groups by dragging a tile or group of tiles all the way to the top or bottom of the right menu pane. o If you do not want ANY tiles, you must individually right click each and Unpin it. Then drag the Start menu to the single column. But why would you want to do that? Instead, Pin your important folders, applications, or tools. 4

Windows 10 Taskbar The Taskbar looks and functions essentially the same as Windows 7. o Other than a few new icons/buttons added: Cortana Personal Assistant, or Search box (if Cortana disabled. Task View Displays thumbnails of all open windows. Also, provides opportunity to add/create "Virtual Desktops". o Have a productivity desktop and a separate entertainment or game desktop. o Provides a way of having multiple monitor views with only one monitor. Microsoft Edge New browser meant to replace Internet Explorer. More about Edge below. Store Accesses the Microsoft Store to find and install free or paid for Apps. Will need a Microsoft Account (ID) to obtain Apps from Store. Action Center (talk bubble icon in the Notification area at the right). The Windows 8 Charms menu is replaced by the more extensive and functional Action center. Open Action center by dragging in from right on a touchscreen. The talk bubble Icon turns white when a new notification (mail, hints, warnings) is available. Bottom area contains access to other features (Connect to a device, and Bluetooth for example). Windows 10 switches easily between Desktop and "Tablet" Modes from the Tablet button in this location. Customize which icons display with Anniversary Update. Customize what displays on the Taskbar by right clicking on the Taskbar, not over an icon, and clicking on any listed item on the right click (context) menu to toggle between display or hide. o Pin items to the Taskbar by: Right click in the All Apps list and choose More, then "pin to Taskbar". Or simply drag to taskbar from All Apps list. 5

Windows 10 Taskbar (cont'd) Windows 10 Revisited Customization of the Notification area (far right side of the Taskbar) involves: o If no Anniversary Update, right click taskbar and choose Properties, then "Customize Notification area. o This takes you to equivalent of Start Settings System Notifications and Actions Select which icons appear. Turn System icons on or off. o After the Anniversary Update, right click to choose Settings. You are taken to equivalent of Start Settings Personalization Taskbar for the same options. o However, also after the Anniversary Update: You can choose which buttons are included at the bottom of the Action Center. Customize them at Start Settings System Notifications and Actions. Here you can also decide which Apps display notifications in the upper Action Center list. Again, with the Anniversary Update, even items such as Auto hide, location of the taskbar (sides, bottom, or top), etc. are under the Start Settings Personalization Taskbar. 6

More about the New Microsoft Edge browser Microsoft Edge is the new streamlined Internet browser intended to replace Internet Explorer. o Internet Explorer is still available should you prefer to use it (see instructions below). o You can also import your Favorites from Internet Explorer or another browser. o Edge offers a Reading view. Book like button at the top right, next to the Add to Favorites star shaped button, removes all the distracting advertisements and page content. Shows only the article and related graphics you are viewing. o Find Favorites, History, and Downloads with the Hub icon, the hamburger menu, top right. o Mark up by writing or highlighting items on a web page, using the button which appears as a rectangle with a pen inside. Then share that marked up webpage via Facebook, , Twitter, etc. This only shares from if you have set up the Windows 10 Mail app! Will not work with Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, MS Outlook, or webmail. o Restore Internet Explorer to the Start menu or Taskbar. Some websites still require the java and activex functions to display content properly. The Edge ellipsis ( ) menu will offer the opportunity to "Open this web page in Internet Explorer". Then a right click on the Internet Explorer taskbar button offers to Pin it to the taskbar. First find Internet Explorer by using Cortana (the search box) or just begin typing Internet upon opening the Start menu and. Internet Explorer should appear at the top of the list. Now right click to Pin it to the Start menu as a tile, or Taskbar. 7

Set up of Microsoft Edge is straight forward. However, Edge hides its Favorites, and makes organization like what was (and still is) available for Internet Explorer much more involved. o And no Sort by Name prior to the Anniversary Update, to alphabetize Edge Favorites. You had to do it by dragging from a "pinned" Hub menu. You can import Favorites from Internet Explorer, Chrome, or other browsers. o Open Edge Settings by clicking on the menu and choosing Settings at the bottom of the list, then Favorite settings. o Click on the "Import favorites from another browser" link. Choose IE, Chrome, etc.) o Turn on the Favorites bar if desired (by clicking the button. Put a home button on the Navigation bar. o On the Settings list, scroll to the bottom and use the "View advanced settings" button, and turn on "Show the home button". Change (or Add) a home page. o By default, Edge opens with the "about:start page. o Change the radio button to the "A specific page or pages". Choose Custom from the drop down list. By doing so, an " Enter a web address " box appears. o In the "Enter a web address box, type the URL for the desired page. It may be easier to first go to that page, and Copy the URL from the address line. Once entered, be sure to click on the Plus sign (to the right of the box) to add it. o You can add as many pages as you want to open. Remove pages by clicking the "X" to the right of the address. o Also, you can set a home page button, without it opening at startup. Further Customization of Microsoft Edge o Rearrange icons in the Favorites, or on the Favorite Bar Open Microsoft Edge. Open the Favorites list by clicking the "Hub" (three bars to the right of the star). Pin it to the side by clicking on the push pin at the right. Now you can drag items to the desired locations. Unfortunately, Edge did not offer a way of simple alphabetizing until the Anniversary Update. Now you can Sort by Name to re alphabetize. 8

Set up of Microsoft Edge (cont'd) o Make Microsoft Edge search open in new tab. Perform a search, any search. On the window, click the sprocket (upper right within the search window, not Title bar area) and choose Settings. Within Settings go to the Web tab. On the Web settings, put a check in "Open links in a new browser window". Click Save (lower left). o Customize the about:start page weather Click on the current location, or the ellipsis menu to the right. Search for your location or use location finder (Always detect my location). Set location as a favorite (star+ button). Or Save if using the Anniversary Update. If necessary, set as home location by clicking on "Make this place my home ". o See the small sprocket icons on the about:start page to change or remove some start page icon locations and items. Using Microsoft Edge Open multiple instances of Edge just as you would any Taskbar item: o Right click the Microsoft Edge icon on the taskbar and choose Microsoft Edge. A new Microsoft Edge window appears. o Or drag an existing tab downward for it to appear as its own window. Unfortunately, you cannot Pin a website to the Taskbar as you can with Internet Explorer. o If this is important, stay with Internet Explorer for now. o You may be warned by Norton or other antivirus programs that Edge is not currently capable of having "Extensions", which makes it less secure. With the Anniversary Update, Edge allows some Extensions, but Norton has not yet created one. Just ignore the warning for now, or it bothers you, click the "Don't remind me about this again" link to the left of the warning. According to Microsoft, Microsoft Edge, stores its original favorites in: %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bb we\ac\microsoftedge\user\default\favorites 9

Other Useful Windows 10 Customizations Customize the Desktop background appearance. o Right click the desktop and choose Personalize. Or the Start Settings Personalization o Then in the left column menu choose Background, Colors, Lock Screen, or Themes. File Explorer is also now using the ribbon interface rather than menus. o New Folder is on the Home ribbon. o link is on the Share ribbon. File Explorer by default opens in the Quick Access view. o I find that sometimes a little crowded. o Instead, open it in This PC (like Windows 8, or Computer opened in prior versions) Open File Explorer and switch to the View ribbon. On the View ribbon, click on Options (far right) and choose Change Folder and Search Options. On the top of the General tab, change "Open File Explorer to" from Quick Access to This PC. Apply and OK. 10

Some important Features to mention, but discuss in later sessions Tablet Mode. o Useful mainly for touch screen tablets, but try it. o Opens a simpler interface optimized for using a finger rather than a mouse. Airplane mode o Useful if connected by cellular or Wi Fi, and want to avoid cellular calls. o Airplane mode blocks both Wi Fi for Internet, and the ability to receive phone calls, while letting you otherwise use the device, such as for games or productivity applications. Cortana o A personal assistant to compete with Apple Siri. o Makes appointments and set alarms. o Does searches of web or computer contents. On Screen Keyboard o Made for touch screen, but offers a numeric keypad if needed. Use Start or Cortana and type keyboard, and then On Screen keyboard. The keyboard icon in the notification area is different. When using a touchscreen, holding down on many on screen letters offers you other special options. o Otherwise use the Character map for those special characters. 11

Virtual Desktops o I mention it because you may accidentally create one and be puzzled why your Desktop suddenly looks different, or lacks icons. o Purpose is to allow screens with specific open windows. For example: One screen with windows (programs open) which are for completing work items While a second desktop has windows open to play games, or entertainment. o Open the Task View (button to the far left, but right of Cortana on Taskbar). o Click on the New Desktop button (+ sign) in the lower right. o Open any programs you want. o To switch desktops, use the Task View button and choose the desired desktop. o Drag programs from one desktop to another. Drag a program until it reduces in size and drag onto the other desktop. Phone Companion app: to see how to use your Android or ios phone with Windows 10. See how much space each App or Application is taking up, and on which Drive. o Settings System Apps and Features See how your Storage is used. o Settings System Storage o Storage properties are better broken down. Search Cortana for "Storage" (or just choose Settings from the Start menu and Storage), then click Storage System settings. Click on the desired drive and watch. 12

Other Setups Set up Cortana o Again, Cortana acts as a personal assistant. Reacts to voice as well as typed commands. Once the microphone (if present is configured (see below). Provides help for Windows functions as well via Web. o Click in the search box (left side Taskbar), and agree to the various request and Next boxes. o It will ask you what you want to be called. o If you click on the microphone, and have a microphone (webcam or dedicated microphone), it may tell you your microphone isn't good caliber. Just ignore that and continue with the microphone setup. o It will ask you to read a paragraph, then most likely will have a Finish button. o Now, a right click on the Taskbar (empty area), will allow you to decide if Cortana is displayed as a search box, just an icon, or hidden from view. If you had a very full Taskbar of icons prior to the Upgrade, the Cortana search box may be hiding some. In that case you want Cortana to display just as an icon. o More customization (turning functions and off) can be accomplished through the various menus found to the left under than "Hamburger menu". Click on the hamburger menu to make the icons have labels. Choose Notebook, and then Settings. Consider turning on "Hey Cortana", so all you need to do is say "Hey Cortana" to have the personal assistant take commands. Some are concerned with privacy with Hey Cortana. Is she listening to more than just your commands? Is she eavesdropping? o Find what Cortana can do: "What can you do?" o Also, Cortana can help when surfing the web. A blue Cortana icon appears in the browser bar (on the right) with "I've got more info," when Cortana can provide more information about the website (Such as Yelp info on a restaurant). 13

Setting up Mail o Mail allows POP accounts (Comcast, CenturyLink) as well as IMAP (Yahoo, Gmail, AOL,) to be set up. o Add accounts Click on the Settings sprocket at the bottom left. Choose Accounts from the list which opens on the right. Click on the Plus sign at the bottom to add an account. Designate what type account. Google/Gmail, Yahoo, Other such as AOL or POP/IMAP, Or choose Advanced Setup to manually insert settings. Manual settings will require knowing the Incoming and Outgoing server addresses and ports. Refer to ISP help for those settings. Insert the address and password. Let Mail attempt to set it up automatically. Or choose Manual setup. It is easy to delete account if not set up to your liking automatically. o Add pop account, but Mail prefers IMAP accounts. o Be careful, and aware during Mail setup. By default, "Other Accounts" wants to install as an IMAP, not POP. o Scroll farther down the account choices to Advanced setup. o You may still prefer to use either Windows Live Mail, or MS Outlook. Adjust Windows Updates o Updates are now mandatory, but you can: Schedule a restart for a specific time If on a Wi Fi connection, you can allow updates to be downloaded only when NOT on a metered wireless connection. To avoid updates, mark you main Internet connection as metered. This will not work for a wired connection! o Can also download from Microsoft a tool to hide certain updates which have caused you trouble. us/kb/ These are often driver updates. 14

Apps and Using Windows Store Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are all available as Mobile Apps for free. o They have limited functionality from the full programs, but sufficient for many. Photos o View, edit, and play with Photos Store o Need a Microsoft Account Calendar o Leave reminders for events People o This is the contact list for Mail and Outlook.com account. o Combines Skype, Windows Live, MSN, Hotmail contacts Groove Music Phone Companion 15

Select Windows keyboard shortcuts for Windows 10 Most Windows keyboard shortcuts work for the last few versions of Windows.
