PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer Installation Guide Chapter 1 - Installing PHD Virtual Backup This guide describes the steps required to install and configure PHD Virtual Backup, including the PHD Console, PHD VBA, and also, the PHD Exporter. To begin, download the installation package from the PHD Virtual Web site. When the download is complete, use the overview steps below to implement PHD Virtual Backup in your Citrix XenServer environment. The PHD Virtual Backup installation package contains: PHDVB_Install.exe: The PHD Virtual Backup installation file to install the PHD Virtual Backup Console and Plug-in. PHDVBA.xva: The PHD Virtual Backup Appliance XVA. PHDVB_Exporter_Install.exe: The PHD Virtual Backup Exporter installation file to install the PHD Exporter. Documentation Installation Overview 1. Review the System Requirements on page 6 and Implementation Planning on page 7 to help you decide how to install and configure PHD Virtual Backup. 2. Install the PHD Virtual Backup Console and Plug-in. See Installing the PHD Virtual Backup Console and Plug-in on page Deploy a PHD Virtual Backup Appliance. See Deploying the PHD Virtual Backup Appliance on page Optionally, if you plan to export backup files to a staging location for archive or long term storage, install the PHD Virtual Backup Exporter. Note: PHD Virtual recommends running the same version of both the PHD Console and PHD VBAs (a v5.2 PHD VBA managed by a v5.2 PHD Console, for example). If you need to maintain multiple versions in a single environment, you can install different versions of the PHD Console on separate Windows machines. 5

Chapter 1 - Installing PHD Virtual Backup System Requirements The following requirements must be met to install and use PHD Virtual Backup. Table 1 - PHD Virtual Backup System Requirements PHD Virtual Backup Appliance Citrix XenServer 5.5 Update 2, 5.6, 5.6 FP 1, 5.6 SP2, GB free space is required for the VBA's virtual disk. Additional free space is required if an attached virtual disk is used to store backups. PHD Virtual Backup Plug-in (for integrated menus) PHD Virtual Backup Console Backup Storage Networking XenCenter 5.5, 5.6, 6.0 Note: The plug-in is supported on XenCenter 5.5 when running on 32-bit Windows platforms, only. Running the plug-in on XenCenter 5.5 on 64-bit Windows platforms is not currently supported. XenCenter 5.5 requires Powershell installed on the Windows machine where PHD Virtual Backup will be installed. Additionally, the XenServer PowerShell Snap-In is required. Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Vista, with.net Framework version 2.0 installed. Refer to the Backup Storage topic in the Installation Guide for details and best practices about backup storage. To initially configure a PHD VBA, it must receive an IP address either through DHCP or by assigning it a static address. To assign a static address, refer to the product documentation. HTTPS access is required for communication between the PHD VBA and Console as well as with each XenServer host. File Level Recovery VM Replication PHD Virtual Backup Exporter To recover files from backups when using Windows, the Microsoft iscsi Software Initiator must be installed and running. If you are using Linux or Unix, install an Initiator for your operating system. VM Replication may require an additional PHD VBA, one deployed at a primary site and another deployed at a secondary (disaster recovery) site, depending on your environment and replication requirements. Windows Server 2003 (32 bit) or Windows Server 2008 R2 with.net Framework version 2.0 or later installed. 6

PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer Installation Guide Implementation Planning Before installing and configuring PHD Virtual Backup, consider the following: 1. Will you be installing the PHD Console and Plug-in or a standalone PHD Console? The PHD Virtual Backup executable included with the installation package can be installed to a Windows computer with or without the XenCenter installed. If it is installed to a machine with XenCenter, the Plug-in is automatically installed, allowing direct access to PHD Virtual Backup from your native environment. If you install to a machine without XenCenter, you can still use PHD Virtual Backup by accessing the PHD Console from the Windows Start menu. 2. Where will you store backup files? You can store backups on an NFS share, CIFS share, or an attached virtual disk. If using an attached disk, it can be created on either local or shared storage. Review Backup Storage on page 9 for additional details to consider when choosing and defining your backup storage. 3. Where should the PHD VBA be deployed? PHD VBAs must be able to access the VMs they will back up, for example, if you have VMs running on a host's local storage, you will need to deploy a PHD VBA to that host in order to back up those VMs. If you are using shared storage in a resource pool, you will need to deploy a PHD VBA to a host within that pool that has access to the shared storage in order to back up those VMs. Figure 1 - A PHD VBA can back up VMs on different hosts when using shared storage. 7

Chapter 1 - Installing PHD Virtual Backup 4. How many PHD VBAs do I need? You will need to deploy at least one PHD VBA per XenServer resource pool. Each appliance can perform backups and restores for VMs within the same resource pool as long as those VMs are using shared storage. If you have more than one resource pool, you will need to deploy an appliance to each pool. Depending on your environment, you may choose to use multiple appliances within each pool. Although multiple appliances can be deployed within an environment, PHD Virtual Backup is licensed on a per-host basis. 5. What archive retention policy will you implement? PHD Virtual Backup can manage the backup archives it creates and automatically purge them based on the retention settings you define. Retention settings are configured per PHD VBA using the PHD Console. Refer to the User Guide or online help for additional information. 6. Will you use reporting? After installing the PHD Console and deploying a PHD VBA, you can enable reporting, per PHD VBA, to receive reports about PHD Virtual Backup. Reports include detailed backup and restore results, errors, and warnings. reports are configured using the tab in the Configuration area of the PHD Console. For additional details, refer to the User Guide or online help. 7. Will you be replicating VMs with VM Replication? VM Replication lets you replicate virtual machines from one location to another, for example, from a production environment to a disaster recovery (DR) site. This feature requires at least one PHD VBA installed and configured with access to both environments - but if you will be using replication in larger environments, you may need additional PHD VBAs. For instance, one PHD VBA deployed at the primary site would be configured to run regular backups of your VMs while a second PHD VBA could be deployed to the DR site configured to replicate VMs from the primary site to the secondary location. After reviewing your replication requirements, deploy the PHD VBAs necessary to meet your DR needs. 8. Will you be exporting backups for archive purposes with the PHD Exporter? The PHD Virtual Backup Exporter is used to make backup files available in an uncompressed state for sending to tape or other long term storage options. The PHD Exporter is a separate Windows application which must be installed on a Windows server machine that will be used as your staging server. Files can be stored locally on the Windows server or any other storage the Windows machine can access. 8

PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer Installation Guide Backup Storage PHD Virtual Backup can use local or external storage locations to store VM backups. When you deploy a PHD VBA, you configure the backup storage by either adding a second virtual disk to the appliance VM (Attached Virtual Disk) or by specifying a network storage location (an NFS or CIFS share). When using an attached disk, it can be created on local or shared storage. Attached disks are formatted and configured automatically by the appliance virtual machine. CIFS/SMB Shares The CIFS service account must have full permissions (read/write/delete) for the share used as the backup target. Also, antivirus software should not be configured to analyze or scan the PHD VBA CIFS storage repository. NFS Shares The PHD VBA requires direct write access to the NFS export. During backup, the PHD VBA will directly mount and copy files to the NFS share. It is important to configure the export to allow this behavior. The following is an example export line: /export/share * (no_root_squash,insecure,rw,sync) Detailed instructions for configuring backup storage are included as part of the PHD Virtual Backup Appliance deployment steps. Note: USB drives are not supported when used as backup storage. How much storage do I need? Due to data deduplication and compression, you can store, on average, one month of backups for each VM by allocating backup storage equal to the total size of the VM data you would like to back up. For example, if you have 500 GB of virtual machines, you should allocate at least 500 GB of storage space. Additional details on determining how much backup storage space you will need can be found the white paper Backup Storage Sizing Guide available on the PHD Virtual web site. For even more information and scenarios, refer to the PHD Virtual Knowledge Base. Your backup retention policy determines how many backups are kept for each VM. By default, all backups are kept. Retention settings can be configured using the Retention tab in the PHD Virtual Backup Console's Configuration area. Hard Links A hard link is essentially a reference to a file or directory on a file system. PHD Virtual Backup makes use of hard links when deduplicating data on the backup data store. Because of this, hard links must be supported and enabled (if necessary) on the storage device used as a backup target. By default, most storage device file systems support hard links and have them enabled, by default - if your storage device supports hard links but does not have them enabled, refer to your vendor's documentation for details on enabling them. If hard links are not supported or enabled for your backup storage location, you will encounter errors after defining the Backup Storage, after the PHD VBA restarts. Typically, these errors will be displayed in the PHD VBA virtual machine's console log as 'operation not supported' when testing the backup storage for hard links. The PHD Console will also display an error in the Dashboard stating that the backup storage has not been configured or mounted. To fix this issue, you will need to either enable hard links on your current backup storage or select a backup storage location that supports hard links, then restart the PHD VBA. 9

Chapter 1 - Installing PHD Virtual Backup Backup Storage Notes For performance reasons, backing up to USB storage is not supported. Backup storage cannot be shared by multiple PHD VBAs - each VBA must use its own unique backup data store. When using multiple PHD Virtual Backup Appliances with network storage, the same backup target destination can be used if you create separate shares for each appliance. For example, you could send backups for PHDVBA-1 to \\StorageServer\backupshare\vba1 and send backups for PHDVBA-2 to \\StorageServer\backupshare\vba2. If you're using an attached storage disk you can increase the size of the storage disk after it's been added by shutting down the PHD Virtual Backup Appliance and increasing the disk size. For additional information and best practices, refer to the User Guide. 10

PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer Installation Guide Installing the PHD Virtual Backup Console and Plug-in When the installation program is run, the PHD Virtual Backup Console is installed and the plug-in is installed to XenCenter, automatically. 13 PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer Installation Guide Deploying the PHD Virtual Backup Appliance The PHD Virtual Backup Appliance is a small virtual machine that performs the backup and restore processing for the VMs in your environment. Follow the steps below to deploy a PHD VBA to your XenServer environment. For information about where you should deploy the PHD VBA and how many you may need, review the section Implementation Planning on page 7 Note: The PHD VBA is configured with 1 GB of memory, by default. If necessary, to improve backup and restore performance, this can be increased after deployment. Note: If you plan to use a second network adapter to access storage on another network, you must complete the PHD VBA configuration by following the steps in the section, Deploying a PHD VBA with Multiple Network Adapters on page 23. What you will need The PHD Virtual Backup Appliance XVA file (PHDVBA.xva) extracted from the PHD Virtual Backup installation package. A Windows computer with XenCenter installed that has access to your XenServer environment. If you will be using NFS or CIFS to store backups, you will need the path to the share and credentials with proper access permissions (if necessary). Caution: If you need to make custom changes to the PHD VBA's default network interface (assigning a specific MAC address, for example), you must make these changes before powering on the PHD VBA for the first time. If you need to make these changes after powering on the PHD VBA, either contact PHD Virtual support to obtain instructions on how to make the changes properly, or deploy a new PHD VBA and make the changes before it is powered on. To deploy and configure the PHD Virtual Backup Appliance for Citrix XenServer 1. From the extracted zip file contents, double-click PHDVBA.xva. XenCenter launches and the Import wizard opens. Note: If you are using XenCenter version 5.5, select Exported VM as the Import type. 2. Make sure the path to the correct XVA is displayed, then click Next. 13

Enter the fully-qualified name or Management IP address of the Pool Master XenServer for the resource pool to which the PHD VBA was deployed. If you are using a single host only, use the IP address or host name of that host. The PHD Virtual Backup Appliance requires these credentials to perform the functions necessary to backup and restore virtual machines. 10. Click the Backup Storage tab. 15

Chapter 1 - Installing PHD Virtual Backup Here you will define where to store your backups. Select from the following: NFS (Network File System): a pre-existing share on a Network File server. SMB/CIFS: a pre-existing share on a Windows storage device. Attached Virtual Disk: a virtual disk added to the PHD Virtual Backup Appliance VM. The attached disk can be created on XenServer local storage or on a shared storage location, for example an NFS share. To create an attached virtual disk: o o o Minimize the PHD Virtual Backup Console (if you close it, you'll need to enter hypervisor information again). Within XenCenter, select the appliance VM, click the Storage tab, and click Add... Enter a name, size, and location for the new disk and click Add. The size entered here is the amount of space you will allocate for storing backups. Location can be either local storage or a remote storage repository (recommended). 11. In the PHD Virtual Backup Console, click Save then click Yes to restart the PHD VBA. The PHD Virtual Backup Appliance is now configured and you are ready to begin running backups. Additional configuration options are available but not required to begin running backups. Refer to the User Guide or online help for details. 16
