4 4 Rising Software Auralia 2.1 Installation Guide 13 Network Operating System Issues Novell Netware Issues It has been found that filenames and directory names with spaces do not appear to work correctly with the Borland Database Engine (BDE) and Novell Netware / Intranetware. Do not use Rising Software as a directory on the server; we suggest that you use the name Rising or RisingSoftware instead. You may receive Invalid Filename messages if this procedure is not followed. Windows NT Issues THIS PAGE HAS BEEN LEFT BLANK INTENTIONALLY There are no specific Windows NT issues at this time.

If the box marked Use shared Settings is enabled, Auralia will read the AURALIA.INI file from the server rather than from the local hard disk. The AURALIA.INI file contains your administration choices such as whether to use security or not and which MIDI Input device to use. If you have the same MIDI Input device available on every computer on your network, you should use this option to make configuration changes apply immediately to all your computers. If some computers have a different MIDI Input setup, you can use the local INI file on those machines alone. Use shared topic data and program files will enable Auralia to use topic data from the network directory, so that any custom topic data that you enter (eg. chords) will be used on all workstations. Click on Ok to save your settings and exit the network screen. 2. Select Administration -> General -> Security from the main menu. Check the the box labeled Use names and passwords at all times. If you did not add an administrator user correctly in the Server Installation section, Auralia will not allow you to select this option. This is to prevent the enabling of the login system without having an administrator defined, a situation that will leave you locked out of the administration features. Click on Ok to exit the Security screen. 3. Select Administration -> Users -> Options from the main menu. Automatic User Registration and Allow users to change their settings should be checked for minimum maintenance. For a complete guide on these settings refer to the section entitled User Administration Options in the User Guide. Record Statistics should also be checked for maximum benefit in a network environment. This will ensure that all results are recorded. Installation Instructions Installing Auralia You must have already installed Windows 95, 98 or Windows NT on your computer to install Auralia. Installation will take approximately 15 minutes, and requires 10Mb of free hard disk space. The Auralia installation will copy Auralia to your hard disk and configure it for your use. 1. Firstly, start Microsoft Windows, and insert the CD-ROM provided with the package into the CD-ROM drive. 2. A welcome screen should automatically appear when the CD-ROM is inserted. If a welcome screen does not appear: * Click on the Start menu and choose Run. * Enter X:\auralia\setup, where X is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. Now press Enter on your keyboard. 3. The Installshield Wizard will now guide you through the setup process. You will need to enter your serial number at the beginning of the installation for Auralia to work correctly. This serial number is located on the inside front cover of the User Guide and on your license agreement. If you are upgrading Auralia, you will need your previous version serial number; you may need the original CD-ROM or diskettes. 4. Auralia installation is now complete. You may need to change some settings if you have an unusual sound or MIDI configuration; see the section on MIDI and Wave Setup in the User Guide. You can also prevent access to the administration menus if you chose to enable the login system; see the Security section of the User Guide.

6 6 Rising Software We recommend the use of 800x600 video resolution with at least 256 colours for maximum picture quality. Performance may be affected if this is not available. Auralia 2.1 Installation Guide 11 click on the Tab labelled Configuration. the setting LOCAL SHARE to be TRUE on the System page. Installation Notes Auralia 2.1 will install files into two directories (folders). They will both stem off a directory called Rising Software. It is absolutely essential that this directory structure is not altered in any way. It is possible, to rename the Rising Software directory to a different file name (perhaps if your file system does not support long filenames.) The Data2 directory contains databases which contains user, class, test and topic details. The statistics databases are also kept here. There is a good reason for having these in a separate directory: Musition 2.0, Rising Software s theory training package will utilise the databases in the data directory. This means that you will have only one set of data and statistics to deal with. Imagine that you have 100 students using Auralia 2.1 on your computer. You then add Musition 2.0. Instead of having to print and maintain two sets of statistics for the students, you only have one. The students only need one login name and password. Rising Software Enabling Network Functionality Each workstation now needs its Auralia configuration changed to allow network database access. Ensure that you have added an administrator user to the network database as described in step 3 of Server Installation 1. The first task is to setup Auralia to use the databases on the server, instead of the local machine. Start Auralia and select Administration -> Network from the main menu. Using the browse button, choose the path of your Rising Software directory. This directory should contain the subdirectories Auralia21, Data2 and Network, as described in the Server Installation section. The directory can referenced by using a mapped drive letter, or, preferrably, using UNC. An example of each is shown below, together with the UNC syntax. Mapped Drive Letter Y:\APPS\MUSIC\RISING SOFTWARE\ UNC \\SERVER\APPS\MUSIC\RISING SOFTWARE\ UNC Syntax \\(server name)\(share name)\(path) Auralia21 Data2 Using UNC will result in a more stable system and is highly recommended. Regardless of which method is used, the setting must be exactly the same on all workstations. This will prevent data loss and corruption. Now, check the box marked Use shared user data files ; this will

7 10 Rising Software Auralia 2.1 Installation Guide 7 Workstation Installation Auralia must be installed on each workstation; Auralia cannot be run from the server installation. 1. Install Auralia on each of your workstations. Third-party automated installation software may make this process easier. It is advisable to read the following sections entitled Workstation BDE Configuration and Enabling Network Functionality before installing on all workstations, especially if you use a specialised installation product to install Auralia. NOTE: If you used a workstation to install Auralia onto your server, ensure that you REINSTALL Auralia on this workstation. Workstation BDE Configuration There are issues to be resolved when using Auralia on Peer to Peer networks (where each machine acts, or can act, as both a client and a server.) and also Client-Server Networks. If you wish to achieve a reliable network database system, we do not reccomend using a Peer to Peer network situation, such as Windows 95 or Windows 98 networking. We recommend using a dedicated server such as Windows NT or Novell Netware. Various UNIX implementations should also work well. Auralia utilises the Borland Database Engine, which provides database services for record keeping and tests, among other things. The setup of the BDE is not automatic on either Peer to Peer or Client-Server networks. To ensure the databases work correctly, there is an option that you must set on each client machine, to allow the BDE to function correctly. You will utilise the BDE Administrator, which can be found under the Control Panel in both Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT. If either of the following errors occur, double check the setting as outlined below. * Directory is controlled by other.net file... * Multiple.NET files in use In the BDE Administrator, found in the Windows Control Panel, Network Functionality Network Installation In an environment where Auralia installed on many computers (Desktop Site License, Lab Pack or multiple Single Licenses required) we recommend that you utilise your computer network (if available) to help you track student performance. Auralia fully supports networked record keeping. This means that all of your student results can be stored centrally, reducing your administration load and giving students far greater flexability regarding the choice of computer that they use. All user, class, statistic and test databases can be stored centrally and a central configuration file can also be used. Auralia 2.1 will share data with Musition 2.0, allowing students to use the same user names and passwords for either program. Class, statistic and test data will also be shared. Network Installation Instructions If you are running Windows from a local hard drive on each computer, Auralia 2.1 must be installed on each computer on your network. It is not possible to simply install Auralia onto the server and run it on each of the clients; some system DLLs and registry keys must be installed on each computer by the setup process. The setup process will also add shortcuts to Auralia on the Start menu under Programs. Once Auralia is installed on each workstation, it can easily be setup to read databases and configuration from a network server. Thirdparty automated installation software may make it easier to install Auralia on all computers if you have many.

8 8 Rising Software Server Installation Auralia is installed onto the server to provide databases and configuration files required for successful network installation and usage. Auralia will install files into two directories. Both of these directories will stem off a parent directory called Rising Software. It is absolutely essential that this directory structure is not altered in any way. It is possible to rename the Rising Software directory and some installations may require this; see Network operating system issues. File Permissions For maximum security and performance, we recommend that you set file permissions as outlined below. This will ensure that student users cannot comprimise the integrity of your result databases. Auralia21 Rising Software Data2 Network 1. Install Auralia onto your server using one of your workstation computers; if you are running a Windows server, you may install it directly using the system console if you wish. When Auralia is installed, check that the directory that you installed it into contains the correct directories as shown above. The Network directory stores temporary network files, and must be available to all users. 2. We are now going to add you to the user database that resides on the server. On the workstation or server console where you installed Auralia, run the program. Select Administration -> Users from the main menu. a. Enter a login name b. Enter a password c. Select the Default Class d. Choose Administrator access Click on Accept and then Ok to exit the screen.
