1 R E L E A S E N O T E S Agilent 7890 GC Instrument Control Software Version 2.01 These release notes explain how to install Waters Instrument Control Software (ICS), version 2.01, for the Agilent 7890 Gas Chromatograph (GC) module in Empower software (build 1154), Empower 2 software (build 2154), and Empower 3 software (build 3471). This software release addresses a reported incompatibility between the Waters 7890 ICS software version 2.00 and the most recent Agilent 7890 firmware versions. This release also addresses other issues, which appear later in this document. This release of v2.01 ICS supports Agilent firmware version A , A , A.01.12, and A Note: Firmware version A is not supported. If you have a previous version of the Agilent 7890 GC ICS installed, remove it using Add/Remove Programs and then reboot the computer. Minimum requirements for Empower 1154, Empower 2154 and Empower 3471 Software: Empower 1154 with Service Pack L Empower 2154 FR3 with Service Pack B Empower 3471 The computer configurations, operating systems and hotfixes that the Waters Instrument Control Software (ICS) supports for the A7890 GC module are the same as those tested with Empower 3 Software, build 3471, Empower 2 Software, build 2154, FR3, FR5 and Empower software, build 1154, Service Pack L. For details on supported service packs and incremental operating system and hotfix support, see the Empower, Empower 2 and Empower 3 installation and configuration guides, software release notes as well as the Waters Web site ( Installing the A7890 GC ICS Recommendation: Back up all Empower projects, library information, and databases before installing this software. The Agilent A7890 GC ICS consists of these components: Driver Needed for Empower software to communicate with the module. User interface Includes the instrument method editor and control panels in Empower Quick Start and Run Samples utility. Online Help for the A7890 GC Access Help when working with an Agilent instrument method by clicking the question mark button while using the instrument method editor. As the software included in this release is installed, only the files required by the software are installed. No Oracle or system files are affected. Page 2 of 8

3 Requirement: Install Empower software before installing the 7890 driver. To use the ICS software on an Empower Enterprise (client/server) system, you must install it on every computer, LAC/E 32 module, client, and Citrix application server that interacts with the A7890 GC, its methods, or results. For consistency, install the ICS on all clients, LAC/E 32 modules, and Citrix application servers. You need not install the ICS software on the database server unless the server hosts client software and interacts with the GC instrument, its methods, or results. General installation instructions using ICS media (not for a Citrix application server): 1. Power-off the A7890 GC, and reboot the computer. 2. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privilege. 3. If you have a previous version of the Agilent 7890 GC ICS installed, use the Windows Add/Remove Programs function to remove it, and then reboot the computer. 4. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privileges. 5. Insert the A7890 GC ICS media in the media drive. 6. Browse to the root of the media, and double-click the setup.exe file. 7. Follow all prompts to finish the installation. 8. Reboot the computer to correctly establish communication with the instruments. Requirement: Use Configuration Manager to verify Waters DHCP Server Service is running on the computer before you power-on the A7890 GC. 9. Power-on the A7890 GC. General installation instructions using a downloaded executable file: 1. Power-off the A7890 GC, and reboot the computer. 2. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privileges. 3. If you have a previous version of the Agilent 7890 GC ICS installed, remove it using the Windows Add/Remove Programs function, and then reboot the computer. 4. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privileges. 5. Browse to the A exe file (downloaded from Waters.com) on your local hard drive, and then double-click it 6. Click Unzip to extract the installation files, browse to the extracted file location, and then double-click the setup.exe file. 7. Follow all prompts to finish the installation. 8. Reboot the computer to correctly establish communication with the instruments. Requirement: Use Configuration Manager to verify Waters DHCP Server Service is running on the computer before you power-on the Agilent GC. 9. Power-on the A7890 GC. To install the Agilent 7890 ICS on a Citrix server: 1. If you have a previous version of the Agilent 7890 GC ICS installed, remove it using the Windows Add/Remove Programs function. 2. Insert the Agilent 7890 ICS media in the media drive. Page 3 of 8

4 3. Open the Control Panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs. 4. Click Add New Programs. 5. In the Run Installation Program dialog box, click Browse. 6. Browse to root of the media. 7. Select the setup.exe file and then click Open. Tip: To view the file, you sometimes must select All Files from the Files of type list. 8. Follow all prompts to finish the installation. Validation Information After you install or uninstall the Waters A7890 ICS on a qualified system, Waters recommends determining your requalification needs based on your laboratory s standard operating procedures. If this is an initial installation in a GxP-regulated environment, perform a full qualification of Empower Software. Waters recommends that you run the Verify Files utility or the ConnectionsAQT for Empower IQ and review the resulting file for an entry that states No installation changes were detected. Note: The date displayed when running Verify Files (IQ) always reflects the last installation. See the Empower.log file for the complete history. Verifying the Installation To verify the installation, select Start > All Programs > Empower > Empower Installation Log. Search for lines similar to this: ***************************************************************** Installed Waters A7890 Software on :00:28 ***************************************************************** The installation of any option or service pack is documented in the checksum.txt file on your Empower computer. This file indicates the installation of any option(s) or service pack(s) and verifies the integrity of disk files by comparing their current CRC and sizes with original values recorded during installation of the base software and any installed option or service pack. This file is created when you run the Verify Files utility by selecting Start > Programs > Empower > Verify Files. To display the checksum.txt file, navigate to the \Empower\Script directory, and then double-click the checksum.txt file. Uninstalling the ICS for the Agilent 7890 module To ensure successful file verification following the removal of the ICS, you must reboot the computer before you uninstall the ICS. To remove any version of the Agilent 7890 ICS from your system: 1. Reboot the computer. Page 4 of 8

5 2. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privilege. 3. Open the Control Panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs. 4. At the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click the Change or Remove Programs icon. 5. Click the version of Agilent 7890 ICS that is on your system, and then click the Change/Remove button. 6. Follow the prompts to remove the control software from your system. The registry and new CRC checksums are updated for the Empower installation. No Oracle or system files are affected. Resolved issues Note: Waters uses Product Change System (PCS) numbers to track the status of issues. PCS Number Description Acquisition using the 7890 stopped after a long run (10 min) in Run Samples using Equilibrate or Condition Column. This behavior is now corrected Agilent 7890 GC ICS v2.0 was not supported for use with 7890 GC firmware version A This has been corrected. Now use of firmware version A is supported for use with ICS v When testing Agilent 7890 GC firmware versions A and A with A7890 ICS version 2.01, some plots and data channels were missing. This has been corrected. The A7890 ICS v2.01 now displays appropriate information for both GC firmware versions listed here Using the 7890 GC v2.0 ICS for data collected in Empower 1154 produces different (lower) peak areas when the data is restored and integrated in Empower 2. This has been corrected in version v2.01 of the ICS. However, any Empower 1154 systems running version 2.0 of the ICS will still display this behavior. Known issues Note: Waters uses Product Change System (PCS) numbers to track the status of issues. PCS Number Description The A7890 ICS v2.01 does not support version A of the Agilent 7890 GC firmware The following file verification problem can occur when you uninstall Agilent LC ICS version 1.06 from the same Empower node where the 7890 ICS v 2.01 is installed: If Agilent LC ICS v.1.06 is uninstalled before the A7890 ICS v 2.01 is uninstalled, then the file InstrIDL.dll appears in the in the Empower file verification results as NOT FOUND The following file verification problem can occur when you uninstall Waters 6850 ICS version 1.20 from the same Empower node where the 7890 ICS v 2.01 is installed: If Waters 6850 ICS v.1.20 is uninstalled before the A7890 ICS v 2.01 is uninstalled, then the file InstrIDL.dll appears in the Empower file verification results as NOT FOUND. 6 PCS Number Description All four fields (i.e., IP address, MAC address, Type, and Name) in the Waters DHCP Server Configuration window must be specified in order for Ethernet-enabled Agilent instruments to scan as Yes. This must be done manually during instrument configuration after ICS installation for Ethernet-enabled Agilent instruments. Currently there is no prompt to remind users when all four of the Waters DHCP Server Configuration fields are not specified After installing the A or A firmware, you must manually reset the syringe volume (using the GC front panel) from 0 to the correct volume. For details on updating the GC firmware, refer to the Agilent instructions. Installation Files The following files are installed in the Empower\Instruments directory.
