2 System Requirements to Run D2L In order to run D2L your machine is required to have the capability to run the program. For Windows PC Users Browsers (you need at least one of the following): Internet Explorer 6 Internet Explorer 7 Firefox 2.0 The Browser that is recommended for windows machines is Internet Explorer 6 Operating System: Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista The Operating System that is recommended by D2L is anything Windows 2003 or higher. Internet Speed: 56K modem with internet access The recommended Internet Speed for using D2L is a 56K modem, DSL or Cable Internet. Java Script: Enabled (if your JavaScript is not enabled see Logon Issues on pgs. 4-5) It is required to have Java Script Enabled when using D2L! Cookies: Enabled (if your cookies are not enabled see Logon Issues on pgs. 4-5) It is required to have your Cookies enabled when using D2L! For Mac Users Browsers: Safari 1.3 Safari 2.0 Firefox 2.0 The Browser that is recommended by D2L for Macintosh users is Firefox 2.0 Operating System: Mac OS X (up to 10.4) D2L recommends that you have a Mac OS X or higher Operating System. Internet Speed: 56K modem with internet access 2

3 The recommended Internet Speed for using D2L is a 56K modem, DSL or Cable Internet. Java Script: Enabled (if your JavaScript is not enabled see Logon Issues on pgs. 4-5) It is required to have Java Script Enabled when using D2L! Cookies: Enabled (if your cookies are not enabled see Logon Issues on pgs. 4-5) It is required to have your Cookies enabled when using D2L! Make sure that your machine meets all of these standards before logging on to D2L. How to get to Desire2Learn 1.) Open a browser (see Recommended Browsers, above). 2.) In the address bar, type in (or copy/paste) D2L s homepage: OR 1.) Go to your UWSP mypoint 2.) At the top right select the Academics tab 3.) At the top of the left hand column left click on Desire2Learn. This will take you to the login page of D2L 3

4 Log-on Procedures Students with UWSP Network Accounts When logging on to Desire2Learn (D2L), enter your current UWSP username and password, and left click once Login. If you have forgotten your password you will need to call the Help Desk at or them at Logon Issues If you are unable to log into Desire2Learn you may be working on a computer where IE (Internet Explorer) Privacy settings are set to High. This will disable the cookies used by D2L. To test: go to the logon screen for D2L, and left click once the link: "Check Your Browser Settings!. Refer to the picture above. 4

5 If "Cookies" fails the system check, 1. Left click once "Tools", on the IE browser's Menu bar and select "Internet Options " 2. Left click once on the "Privacy" tab. 3. If the Privacy setting is set to "High", move the slider bar down to "Medium" and left click once "OK". Note: campus computers here at UWSP have a Privacy setting comparable to "Medium". Secure and Non Secure Items While logging into D2L a box like the one above might pop up. This is due to the new updates in D2L. Simply left click once on Yes. Anytime you are in D2L and this box pops up just left click once on Yes. Once you have logged into D2L: Getting into your specified course Make sure that you look at the News section for information on downtimes and new features. Select the course in which you are currently enrolled by going to the My Stevens Point Courses box located at the bottom middle portion of the screen below the News box. 5

6 Checking News To check your professor s news, you will need to look in the News box which is located on the Course Homepage. If your professor uses the News box make sure to check this box regularly. An example follows: The Navigation Bar This is where all of the important items for the course are located, such as: Quizzes, Discussion, Grades, Content, and Dropbox. An illustration follows: Navigation Bars are located near the top of your screen above and below the name of the course. Left click once the item link to enter one of these areas. 6

7 Content This is where you will go to access course materials. To get to the course content you will need to: 1. Move the mouse up to the Navigation bar, and over the Content link. 2. Left click once on the Content link. You should now see the content list. Left click once a blue highlighted link to view a Content topic online. (You may wish to choose the option to save the file to your computer and open it offline to reduce download time.) To download/print content from this page, click on the Print/Download link on the top of the page. The next page will look like the picture below: 7

8 Place a check next to the items that you would like to print or download. Once you have selected all the items you need go to the bottom of the page and select whether you would like to print or download the checked items. The first checkbox, selects all items on the page for you. The next icon is to print the selected items and the third will download the checked items for you. Hover your mouse over these icons to see a tooltip description. Discussions It is in this window where you will be able to Post your class discussion assignments and questions. To access the Discussions item you need to: 1. Left click once the Discussion link on the navigation bar. To enter a Discussion topic, left click once the blue, highlighted link (see below) 8

9 To Post a Comment or Question: When you are going to post a comment or a question it is a good idea to write your comment or question in some kind of word processor and then copy it into the correct box. This is a good idea because if you switch windows while you are typing you will lose everything that you have written so far. 1. Move the mouse over to the Compose button and left click once on it. If you can t find the Compose button refer to the illustration below. 2. Type in the subject of your message in the Subject: input box. 9

10 3. Left click once in the Message Text Area and type your message. 4. If you would like to attach a file scroll to the bottom of the message, and left click once on the Add a File button. Then type in your files location, or use the Browse button to locate the file. 5. Once you have completed typing your message if you would like to spell check your message you will need to go up to the top right of the message box and left click once the button and follow the onscreen instructions. If a word is misspelled it will give you a list of suggestions where you will need to select the right spelling and left click once Change. If you want to keep it the way you spelled it you will want to left click once Ignore. When you are all finished left click once Finish. 6. Then left click once Submit at the bottom right of the screen. (*Important) Replying to a Message: If you would like to reply to a message someone has posted you will need to first: 1. Left click once on the message that you would like to reply to. 2. Left click once on Reply. 3. Type in your message and run spell check. 4. Then Left click once on Submit. 10

11 Switching the view to Threaded: Not Threaded: Threaded: 1. Go up next to View: and left click once on the drop down box to get a list of choices. 2. Select Threaded and there you go, it is now threaded. Opening Attachments in the Discussion Pane: 1. Left click once on the attachment and a new window should come up displaying the contents of the attachment. 2. If you would like to print this attachment simply go up to file and left click once print. A window will come up and just left click once OK. Grades To view your grades you will need to left click once on the Grades link located in the navigation bar. Only your grades will show up in your view. Your instructor may also post statistics on how the class did in that particular assignment (Average and Score Distribution). 11

12 Quizzes To view your quizzes that are up for completion, you will need to left click once on Quizzes in the navigation bar. The quizzes window will look as follows on the next page: If your course requires that you take quizzes or Exams in D2L, they would be listed under the current quizzes column. To access a quiz you will need to left click once on the quiz you want to take and follow the on-screen instructions. 12

13 Dropbox The Dropbox is used for instructors to receive papers or assignments that you have completed on you computer. To get to the dropbox you will need to left click once on the Dropbox button in the navigation bar. If there are any folders it will look something like this: If you are using Word Perfect or Microsoft Works for writing your documents, save your documents as Rich Text files (.rtf format) before you upload them into the Dropbox. If you do not want to save it as rich text you will need to copy it into Microsoft Word or Wordpad and then upload it (.doc is preferred). Your instructor may not be able to open your assignments if they are written in WordPerfect or Microsoft Works! To submit something to a folder simply: Left click once on the folder you want. This will take you to that folder. Left click once on Add a File Left click once on browse and select the file you would like to upload and left click once Open If you would like to add more then one file select add and browse again for the other files. When you are all finished left click once the Upload button, this window will close Verify that the files you want to download are correct If you want to add a comment, you can type that in the comment box. 13

14 When you are all finished Left click once on the Upload button, which is located at the top and bottom of this screen. View Feedback of Dropbox Submission Once you have submitted an assignment to the dropbox in D2L your instructor may choose to give feedback of your assignment. There are a couple of ways you can view this feedback. One of those ways is looking in the Dropbox: Left click once on the Dropbox button in the Navigation Bar. Locate next to your Assignment the Feedback Column. 14

15 Left click once on the link with the text New to view your Feedback. Another way to view feedback from an assignment is to go into your grades. Left click once one the Grades button in the Navigation Bar. Underneath the Assignment Name and Grade you should see your feedback for the assignment. Editing your Profile in D2L To get to your profile in D2L left click once on Classlist located in the navigation bar at the top of D2L. Once you are there find your name in the list. Find the? next to your name on the left and left click once on the?. Here you will find all sorts of information that you can include and tell people about yourself. One big thing to remember is that anything you put in here will be shown in all of your courses in D2L, and any students in those classes will be able to see your information. When you are done filling out your information go down to the bottom of the screen and left click once on Save Changes. Logging Out To log out you will need to follow these steps: 1. Left click once on Logout located in the navigation bar. That was easy wasn t it? If you had problems finding the Logout button refer to the illustration as follows (Some teachers may choose to move the logout button, if that is the case either consult your teacher or look around on the top of the document): 15

16 When you left click once the Logout button it will bring you back to the D2L Log on page. If you would like to Log back in you will need to enter your username and password once again and left click once Login. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: What is the best way to print content pages? A: It seems to work best if you print content pages by left clicking once on the printer icon in the upper right corner of the D2L frame. If you use the print command in your browser instead, it might print all of the frames and possibly some extra blank pages. Q: What is the best way to print discussions? A: First, you will want to make sure the discussion pages are in the "Threaded" View. Next to this View box, scroll over the icons until you find one that says "view posts in a printable format." Left click once this icon, then left click once the D2L "print" button. Q: How do I change my font size and face of my course home? A: You will first need to make sure that you are at your course home. To make sure that you are at the course home you will need to left click once on Course Home in the navigation bar. When you are at the course homepage you will need to go to the left of the screen and you will see a box labeled Welcome. In that box there will be a section labeled My Settings. Under the label there will be My Preferences. Left click once on My Preferences and a window will come up with Font Settings. Choose the font and the size you would like and then left click once Save on the bottom if you scroll all the way down. Your settings should have changed. 16
