1 Session 2: Intermediate Windows TYPING: Register for an online typing account at by clicking on Register. You will need to fill in a few text boxes. My Username is. My password is. You can access your account to practice typing on any computer with internet access; it will remember your progress. Once logged in, take the typing test to determine your level. COMPUTER TERMS: Ctrl+Alt+Delete & Task Manager Dialog Boxes VS. Windows Memory- byte kilobyte (KB) megabyte (MB) gigabyte (GB) terabyte (TB) Storage capacity (hard drives, discs, flash drives) VS. RAM (Random Access Memory) To see the size (how much storage space something takes up) of a file or application: External storage devices in Windows XP appear as icons in My Computer and must be ejected on the screen before being removed. START MENU & TASK BAR CUSTOMIZATION: Right-click on either to open their settings. Some useful Accessories in the Start Menu: Paint & Calculator A useful System Tool : Disk Defragmenter (run monthly to speed up your computer!) CONTROL PANEL: Change the computer s settings here. To change the resolution (how big things are on the screen) To change the desktop picture To change the screen saver To change the input language, make sure the language bar is displayed, or that a little, blue is on the Taskbar. If it s not, 1. Select Regional and Language in the Control Panel. 2. Click on the Tab, then click on the Button. 3. Click on 4. Check these: &, then click. 5. Click and then click. Right-click on the taskbar, select Toolbars, and make sure there is a check next to Language Bar. The should appear. If your language isn t listed, it may need to be added to the bar list or installed from a system disc. You can also do an internet search for Arabic keyboard or Tibetan keyboard, and many ways to type online will be offered. Simply copy and paste the text onto your computer!

2 Session 3: Intermediate Word. (Refer also to the Word 2003 Personal Trainer Quick Reference) Insertion Point VS. Cursor Lines of text VS. Space VS. Columns Normal View VS. Web Layout VS. Print Layout VS. Outline VS. Reading Views FORMATTING DOCUMENTS File Menu : Page Setup Page Orientations: Portrait (Vertical/Tall) VS. Landscape (Horizontal/Wide) 3 Ways to change the margins: 1. In Page Setup, type the # s. 2. File Menu : Print Preview. Drag the dotted lines wider or narrower. 3. Drag between dark grey & white areas of the Rulers on upper & left borders of the document (opposite the scroll bars). NAVIGATING (See Quick Reference for use of Home/End/Pg. Up/Down!) Arrow keys <Ctrl> + Arrow keys - Backspace VS. Delete HIGHLIGHTING Click & Drag (with the mouse) OR Double-click - Triple-click - Click in the left margin (cursor looks like this: ) - <Shift> + Arrow keys - <Ctrl> + <Shift> + Arrow keys - <Shift> + <Home> - <Shift> + <End> - <Ctrl> + <Shift> + <End> - Edit Menu : Select All, OR <Ctrl> + <A> - SPACING & ALIGNMENT Push <Enter> to add a space between lines or begin a new line. Normal spacing is called single-spaced, with little space between lines. Lines with a small, blank space in between lines (big enough to fit another line of text in it) is called double-spaced text. 3 <Enter> pressings = a triple-space. To leave room for a signature at the end of a letter, type the closing (i.e. Sincerely, ), then use a quadruple-space (press Enter four times), then type the name of the person who will sign the letter. To change the spacing of a whole paragraph or document, highlight the text, open Format Menu : Paragraph. In the Line Spacing drop-down menu, choose Single, 1.5, or Double. It also has a button on the Formatting Toolbar. To change how much space is between letters, choose Format Menu : Font, then select the Tab. In these menus, choose either Condensed or E x p a n ded, and adjust the amount of the change with the numbers in the By: box. To indent (by default = 5 spaces, or go to next Tab Stop ) and begin a new, left-aligned paragraph, push the <Tab> Key. For more on alignment (i.e. Left, Center, Justified) see the Quick Ref. FORMATTING TEXT Always highlight the text you want to format (and only the text you want to format) before making any changes. With Microsoft Word, we can change the following about text: Font typeface, calligraphy, character set, alphabet/language in which we type = the kind of letters Size measured in points, usually no smaller than 8 or larger than 24, except in special cases. To increase or decrease one point at a time, hold <Ctrl> and press <[> or <]>. Color (this won t change on paper if you don t use a color printer. Then it s all Grayscale.) Style (Bold, Italics, Underline, Strikethrough, Superscript, Subscript, Shadow, Embboossss,, ALL CAPS, etc.) To change it, click on the button in the Toolbar, or choose Format Menu : Font.

3 Session 4: Basic Résumé Writing There are thousands of résumé sites online, so this class won t have a handout. We ll just pass out samples in class.

4 Session 5: Intermediate Internet The Internet.com.org.edu.gov URL/web address Modem Internet Service Provider (ISP) Address Bar Search Bar (searches for a term in your default search engine) Web Portals (aol.com, yahoo.com, msn.com, etc.) have links to many kinds of websites. Internet Explorer (and web browsers) To open a new tab with the keyboard: To open a new tab with the mouse: To close a tab without closing Internet Explorer: To make the words BIGGER: To see your surfing history: Cursors: When does your cursor look like these? Q&A: Answer the following (orally in complete sentences). What does a computer need to connect to the internet? What web browser does your computer use? What is a home page? How many times should we click on a link? Why is it better to open new tabs than to open new windows? How can you open a link in a new tab? Search Engines: The three most popular are: Google, Yahoo, and Bing (MSN). Types of searches: Web Image Video News Shopping Maps When you type a word or term in a search engine, it will find pages of hits in its search results. Exercise: Favorites. Add a dictionary site to your Favorites list (click on Favorites menu and choose Add to Favorites ). The sites below are recommended for Spanish and Chinese speakers; others should use a search engine and test the results. If you read a newspaper or magazine, search for its website in a search engine and add it to your Favorites, too. Spanish: Chinese:

What are three ways to go to a website you ve visited before without typing its address again? What is different about closing Internet Explorer when you have more than one tab open? To copy & paste from the internet into a word processor: 1. Highlight/select what you want to copy. 2. Right-click on the selection and choose Copy 3. Activate (go to) the file where you want to paste it. 4. Put the cursor exactly where you want to paste it. 5. Right-click and choose Paste. ( Copy and Paste also live in the Edit Menu. Or with the keyboard, Copy = <Ctrl> + <C>, Paste = <Ctrl> + <V>)
