CHAPTER 1 Troubleshooting This document provides troubleshooting guidelines for EMC VFCache. Topics include: Understanding VFCache performance on page 9 First things first on page 10 Partitioning source devices on page 10 Card issues on page 10 Error messages on page 14 Understanding VFCache performance Understanding how VFCache works will enable you to best take advantage of its benefits. On a write request, VFCache first writes to the array, then to the cache, and then completes the application IO. On a read request, VFcache satisfies the request with cached data, or, when the data is not present, retrieves the data from the array, writes it to the cache, and then returns it to the application. The trip to the array can be on the order of milliseconds, therefore the array limits how fast the cache can work. As the number of writes increase, the VFCache performance decreases. VFCache is most effective for workloads with 70% read-write ratio or more, with small, random IO (8K is ideal). IO greater than 64K will not be cached. Understanding VFCache performance 9
First things first When you have any concern about caching performance, check these issues first: Confirm that IO is flowing through the cached source device. Verify that the cache source device(s) are those being used by the application. Verify the application access pattern to make sure it can be accelerated with VFcache: Partitioning source devices Card issues Use OS tools to confirm that request sizes are smaller than 64k, and that read-write ratio is around 70% and higher. If the application does mostly reads, but the statistics show more writes, it may be that most of the reads are satisfied by the application caching. Use the application tools to verify this. Verify that the card is operating correctly. For more information, refer to Card issues on page 10. In Linux, once a source device has been started it cannot be partitioned. To partition the device, first stop the device, then create the partition, then restart the device. This section describes the following card issues: Operational states on page 11 Flash device health on page 11 Unplanned shutdown on page 12 LED indicators on page VFCache Troubleshooting Guide for Windows and Linux
Operational states The VFCache device can be one in the following operational states: State Started Stopped PT-RD PT-WR PT-RW Description Reads and writes are being processed by the cache device. This is the normal state. The device has been stopped. New source reads bypass the cache. This state would be entered if the cache encounters more than 64 read IO errors on cache device. New source writes bypass the cache. This state would be entered if the cache encounters more than 64 write IO errors. New reads and writes bypass the cache. This state would be entered due to health of the device. For more information, refer to Flash device health on page 11. Check the log for additional information. Flash device health You can manually change the operational state of a cache device or source device using the vfcmt set -opmode command. Flash devices have a finite life, usually determined by the program erase cycles (e.g. writes). In addition, flash devices can overheat if they sustain a high level of write requests. VFCache performs periodic "health check-ups" to prolong the life of your device. In some cases, VFCache may slow the rate of IO or bypass the device all together. Flash device health on page 11 Card issues 11
The following table summarizes the preventative measures that VFCache will take to keep your flash device in good shape: If this happens All flash program erase cycle ( life ) have been consumed. Drive enters write protect mode because the internal temperature is getting too hot Life consumed reaches 90% Life consumed reaches 100% The flash device reaches 100 degrees C The flash device exceeds 120 degrees C VFCache will do this Change cache status from started to PT-RW. Change cache status from started to PT-RW Write the following message to the log: %s: Attention! - VFCache cache device - Approaching End of Specified Lifetime. Continued usage may lead to loss of data and/or degraded performance %s is replaced with the actual OS device name Write the following message to the log: %s: Attention! - VFCache cache device - End of Specified Lifetime has been Reached. Any Additional Usage will Invalidate Warranty and Data Retention Specification. %s is replaced with the actual OS device name Write the following message to the log: %s: Attention! - VFCache cache is Now in Decreased Performance Mode due to Thermal Limiting. %s is replaced with the actual OS device name The flash device is taken offline, and VFCache writes the following message to the log: %s: Attention! - VFCache cache is Now in Thermal Shutdown mode to Prevent Over Heating. %s is replaced with the actual OS device name Unplanned shutdown An unplanned shutdown of the cache device, for instance from a power interruption, can cause the P320 device to enter into a metadata rebuild state. Rebuild can take up to 7 minutes. After the rebuild completes, you must restart VFCache manually. 12 VFCache Troubleshooting Guide for Windows and Linux
VFCache checks for the occurrence of an unplanned shutdown upon the execution of the vfcmt start -cache_dev command. If an unplanned shutdown is identified, VFCache sends the following message to the log: SfcMtStartCache:: Cache(<cache dev>, sn <serial# string> Rebuild <0/1, 0==the card is rebuilding> err <SfcMtError_t> LED indicators The following table describes the meaning of the LED indicator lights. Table 1 LED indicator codes HHHL Description Green LED Amber LED Red LED Off Off Off Indicates that power is off. Green/amber flashing alternately (200ms) Off Firmware is rebuilding tables. On Off Off Power on, no host activity. Flashing (30ms) Off Off Host, PCI, and NAND activity. Flash error code Flash error code Flash error code Indicates an error code. Error codes are three digits long and are displayed by blinking the first digit, then the second, then the third with pauses in between and a long pause before repeating. The drive is not operational. Firmware fatal error codes: 112: Failure during DRAM initialization 113: Not enough DRAM to run in the configured mode 313: DRAM UECC error 441: Error during chip initialization 411: Incorrect drive parameters in the firmware image Card issues 13
Table 1 LED indicator codes HHHL Description Green LED Amber LED Red LED Off Flashing (30ms) Off Meta data is being saved. Off On Off Safe to power off. Off Off On Drive encountered critical error. Call support. Log files Error messages By default, VFCache logs errors, warnings, and information messages. You can increase the log level to debug by setting the environment variable to debug mode "SFC_LOG_LEVEL=Debug". Note that doing so will affect performance. In Linux, you can find the log files in /var/log/messages. In Windows, all messages intended for the user are sent to the Windows Application Event log, together with a unique message ID. The following table describes common run-time error messages: Table 2 Common run-time error message Action Error Message Possible Reason Solution Adding a cache device, for example, vfcmt add -cache_dev /dev/rssdb cmdadd:: Cache for /dev/rssdb failed, Error: 0xe SFCMT Add Command error (14): Cache Device is invalid, not connected or discovered yet. In this case, /dev/rssdb is a non-existent device Use an existing, supported flash device. vfcmt add -cache_dev /dev/sdf cmdadd:: Cache for /dev/sdf failed, Error: 0x7 SFCMT Add Command error (7): Device not found or is unknown to VFC This error occurs when the device specified for the cache device is not supported by VFCache. Use a supported VFCache flash device 14 VFCache Troubleshooting Guide for Windows and Linux
Table 2 Common run-time error message (continued) vfcmt add -cache_dev /dev/rssda1 cmdadd:: Cache for /dev/rssda1 Succeeded, hd=4 Proceeding to start cache device cmdstart:: Cache for /dev/rssda1 failed, Error: 0x26 SFCMT Add command error(38): The size of the cache device does not meet minimum requirements.
