1 SymSYNC TM User s Guide Cautions and Warnings Refer to the Simplex 125 User s Guide (Part No ) for all appropriate Cautions and Warnings. Introduction This publication shows how to install, configure, and operate the SimSYNC software package and the SimSYNC converter (Part No ). This document also describes three basic applications when using these products with the Simplex 125-O Synchronized Time Stamp. SimSYNC software does not supply synchronized corrected time. The software package resides on an IBM Compatible PC that receives corrected time from an outside source (e.g., NIST via modem or network) and then distributes this time from the PC s COM port to another device (e.g., a time stamp. 2 SimSYNC Software Installation Overview This section shows how to install the SimSYNC software onto a PC. Use the following steps and figures to install the software. IMPORTANT: Save all work and close all open applications before attempting to install the SimSYNC software. Depending on your current PC settings, the install program may need to restart your PC. Software Installation Use Steps 1 through 7 and Figures 1 through 5 to install the SimSYNC software. The following assumes your CD Drive is your D: drive. 1. Insert the SimSYNC software CD into your D: drive. 2. From the Windows Start button, click Run. 3. At the prompt type D:\setup_126.exe and click OK. Figure 1 appears. Figure 1. SimSYNC Setup Program Screen 4. Read the instructions on the screen. Once you are finished, click the Next button. Figure 2 appears. 2

If you wish to install the software to an alternate folder, click the Browse button and choose an alternate folder. If you wish to install the software to the default folder, click the Next button to continue. If you wish to exit the Setup, click Cancel. If you select Next, the software will install the appropriate files to the folder indicated. Figure 3 appears. Figure 3. Program Manager Group Selection Screen 3

4 SimSYNC Software Installation, Continued Software Installation (continued) 6. From the screen shown in Figure 3 you can select which Program Group you want SimSYNC to appear in. This selection determines where in the Start>Programs Menu SimSYNC will appear. Choose from the list shown on your PC or click Next. Figure 4 appears. Note: Clicking on Next without choosing a group will give SimSYNC its own group called SimSYNC. Figure 4. Ready to Install SimSYNC 7. Click Next to begin the software installation. Once all files are successfully installed, Figure 5 appears. Click Finish to end the installation. Figure 5. Successful Install Screen 4

5 Activating the SimSYNC Software To Activate SimSYNC To activate the SimSYNC software, simply click the Windows Start button, click Programs, find the SimSYNC Program Group or the group in which you installed the software, and click on the SimSYNC application icon (see Figure 6). IMPORTANT: You must start the SimSYNC software in order for your time stamps to be synchronized to your PC. If you add the software to the Startup Program Group, SimSYNC will start automatically every time you reboot your PC. 5

6 Activating the SimSYNC Software, Continued Time/Date Tab Figure 7 shows the main SimSYNC application screen with the Time/Date Tab selected. SimSYNC reads the Local (PC) time and sends out SimSYNC time from a designated COM port to the devices that are configured to receive synchronized time. Time/Date Tab Screen From this screen you can Hide (minimize) or Exit the program. When exiting the program you are prompted for your password (see Figure 8). The default password is password (all lower case letters). You are allowed three tries at entering your password. Refer to the Changing Your Password section of this publication (see page 10) for more information about your password. Type password and click OK Figure 8. Password Screen 6

7 Activating the SimSYNC Software, Continued Hiding or Minimizing SimSYNC There are two methods you can use to Hide or Minimize the SimSYNC application: 1). Click the Hide button, 2). activate the Start Minimized option. Hide Button. Once the software is active, you can minimize the main screen so that you can run other applications. Simply click the Hide button on the main SimSYNC screen (see Figure 7). Start Minimized. For information on starting the SimSYNC software in minimized mode, see the Setting the Start Minimized and Master Clock Options section of this publication beginning on page 14. SimSYNC does not show up as a minimized program button in the taskbar (usually found at the very bottom of your screen) but instead shows in the background programs section of the taskbar (usually found in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen). SimSYNC does its task automatically. An example of the taskbar is shown with SimSYNC active in Figure 9. SimSYNC Icon Figure 9. Background Taskbar To restore the SimSYNC software so that you can view the time, make configuration changes etc., click the left mouse button on the SimSYNC icon. Right clicking on the SimSYNC Icon brings up a context menu (Figure 10). Click on Restore to make the main SimSYNC screen appear. Click on Exit to exit SimSYNC. 8 Configuring the SimSYNC Software (Options Tab) Overview This section describes how to configure SimSYNC with your PC. For a description of the three basic applications, refer to the Applications section of this publication starting on page 16. The SimSYNC Options Tab has eight main fields: SimSYNC Time Offset Notification Comm Port Start Minimized Baud Rate Master Clock Change Password Display Adjustment Setting the SimSYNC Time Offset The Order Audit Trail System (OATS SM ) requires that Time Stamps used in securities transactions be set to Eastern (New York) Time. The easiest way to accomplish this is to offset the time shown on a corrected PC. For example, if the time on your PC is 12:00PM Pacific Time you would want to add or offset the time by three hours. Click the + radio button in the SimSYNC Time Offset area and use the Up arrow on the left of the time box to scroll the hours until 03:00 is displayed (see Figure 11). Maximum time that you can Offset is 24 Hours. To reset the Offset time to zero, simply click the Clear button. When the desired offset time is entered, click the Apply button. 9 Configuring the SimSYNC Software (Options Tab), Continued Setting the Comm Port and Baud Rate The Comm Port Setting tell SimSYNC which one of your PC s Com Ports to use when sending out SimSYNC time. Choose the available Com Port on your PC from the options shown. The Baud Rate Setting is the rate at which SimSYNC will communicate with the corrected device (e.g., Time Stamps, Master Clocks, etc.). When changing either of these settings, be sure to click Apply to activate your new settings. You will be prompted for your password. 10 Configuring the SimSYNC Software (Options Tab), Continued Changing Your Password From the SimSYNC Options Tab, click Change Password. Figure 13 appears. Figure 13. Change Password Screen From this screen you must enter your Old (existing) password, type in your New password, then type it again in the Confirm password box. When you are finished, click OK. Figure 14 appears. IMPORTANT: Make a note of your New password. If you forget or misplace your New password, contact your local Simplex branch office. Click OK to return to the SimSYNC program. You do not need to click Apply to make your New password active. Figure 14. New Password Saved Screen 10

11 Configuring the SimSYNC Software (Options Tab), Continued Configuring Your Notification SimSYNC can be configured to keep a log of its activity. SimSYNC can also activate a customer programmed executable file, or any valid operating system command, every time SimSYNC enters Alarm state. 12 Configuring the SimSYNC Software (Options Tab), Continued Configuring Your Notification (continued) Alarm When the Alarm box is active, SimSYNC executes a customer provided Command every time the software enters Alarm mode. It will also turn the time display for the SimSYNC Time to red. It is the responsibility of the user to enter the appropriate expression in the alarm command line text box. If the Alarm box is not checked, the Alarm Command Line is not shown. A sample executable file called AlarmDemo.exe is provided that flashes on the screen when in alarm state. The default command line will run this. To include a message that will be displayed on the default Alarm screen, leave a space after the AlarmDemo.exe file name on the command line, then type the desired message. The example in Figure 15 shows the command line set to display the Alarm Screen as it appears in Figure 16. Some other uses of the customer executable file could be: Send an to the System Administrator that a loss of sync has occurred. Activate a bell or other notification device. Two conditions will trigger the Alarm state: No sync request is received for 65 seconds if using a SimSYNC converter, or 65 minutes if using a Master Clock. The time returned by the SimSYNC Converter (after sync) differs by more than three seconds from the SimSYNC time. Figure 16. Alarm Screen 12

13 Configuring the SimSYNC Software (Options Tab), Continued Configuring Your Notification (continued) Log File When the Log File is active, SimSYNC logs each transaction, including startup events, synchronization events, changes to the settings, and shutdown events. The log file records the type of event taking place along with some or all of the following information for each entry: Date and Time PC Time SimSYNC Time (returned from the SimSYNC Converter) The difference between PC Time and SimSYNC Time The specific change to settings At 24:00 every day, the program creates a new log file. The log file name is SSmm.dd.yyyy.txt. An example of a log file is shown in Figure 17. The file size will be about 160KB (for a full day) and is saved in the SimSYNC folder on your hard drive. This is an easy way of determining when SimSYNC has gone into no sync mode. You can review this file by simply double clicking the file name from Windows Explorer. Make sure that you have sufficient disk space for these logs. Delete or archive any unwanted files from time to time. WARNING: Do not open the log file for the current day while SimSYNC is running. If connected to a converter, SimSYNC requires access to the file every minute to add each transaction. When a Master Clock is in use, the file is accessed every hour at 35 minutes past the hour. 14 Configuring the SimSYNC Software (Options Tab), Continued Setting the Start Minimized and Master Clock Options In order to hide the SimSYNC main screen automatically, check the Start Minimized box. (See Figure 18.) If this option is active, SimSYNC is automatically hidden when you start it. When minimized, the program can be accessed by clicking on the SimSYNC icon in the Background Taskbar. See page 7 for moreinformation on restoring SimSYNC when hidden. If you are using SimSYNC with a Master Clock (rather than a SimSYNC converter), check the Master Clock box, which automatically changes some of the software settings. When this box is checked, the baud rate is set to 4800 (standard for the serial interface) and the Alarm is reconfigured to be activated only if SimSYNC receives no query from the Master Clock for 65 minutes (instead of the 65 seconds standard with a converter). After changing the Start Minimized or Master Clock settings, be sure to click on Apply to activate your changes. Setting the Display Adjustment The Display Adjustment (shown in Figure 18) accounts for any constant difference between your PC time and the SimSYNC time. To set the Display Adjustment, compare your PC time to the time display on the Master Clock or 125-O that your PC is connected to. If there is a difference, set the Display Adjustment to match the difference in seconds. The default setting for this field is 2 seconds, which is a typical delay resulting from transmission of the signal. The maximum display adjustment you can enter is 5 seconds. 15 Help/About Tab Using Help The Help/About Tab provides information about the SimSYNC software. Here you can see the version of SimSYNC that you are running and can click on Help to view a Readme.TXT file that may contain useful information that does not appear in this publication. Figure 19. 16 Applications Overview This section describes the three main applications or solutions using Simplex equipment. These solutions will provide synchronized time to Simplex 125-O time stamps. Refer to the Simplex 125-O Addendum (Part No ) for wiring terminations to the Simplex 125-O time stamp. For more information on the equipment needed for the installation, refer to the data sheet (Pub. No. S ). Consult the Wiring Distance Chart section when calculating your line distances for all solutions. Solution 1 Figure 20 shows an application using the SimSYNC Software and the SimSYNC Converter. Note: When configuring the SimSYNC software, ensure that the Baud Rate is set to 9600 for this solution. Figure 20. Solution 1 Using SimSYNC Software and Converter 16

17 Applications, Continued Solution 2 Figure 21 shows an application using the SimSYNC Software to a 6400 Master Clock. This solution requires an optional RS-232 Module installed in the Consult your 6400 Installation/Operating manual for more information on configuring the RS-232 Module. For this solution, use the following steps as a guideline. 1. Install and configure the SimSYNC software. Note: When configuring the SymSYNC software, ensure that the Baud Rate in the software and at the 6400 is set to 4800 for this solution. 2. Connect an RS-232 Cable from the configured Com Port on the PC to the RS-232 Module of the Connect Belden 8760 or CAT5 wire from the BCD out of the 6400 directly to the Simplex 125-Os OR to a patch panel/punchdown block out to the time stamps. 18 Applications, Continued Solution 3 Figure 22 shows an application using the 6800 WWV Receiver and the SimSYNC Converter. This solution does not require the SimSYNC Software.
