SUNDE VDI solution is achieved by running desktop virtualization software vpoint together with Virtualization software like VirtualBox. It does not require any third party VDI software or GPU hardware acceleration, but only needs SUNDE-VDI protocol, which is part of SUNDE VDI solution. Now users can experience perfect, smoothest desktop virtualization with the help of SUNDE Diana, a cloud terminal with only 5W power consumption. 1 Configuration requirements on Host PC (or Server) hardware The configuration of hardware of Host PC (Server), which is going to host virtual machines designated for SUNDE VDI solution, needs to support 64bit operating systems and VT (Virtualization Technology). The size of RAM is decided by the numbers of virtual machines to be created on the Host PC (Server). For a 10 virtual machines host, If 512Mb to 1024Mb memory is going to be assigned for each virtual machine, an amount of 8Gb to 12Gb RAM in total shall be installed on the Host PC (Server). SSD (Solid State Drive) is recommended for faster storage if the number of virtual machines to be created is above 5. SSD (Solid State Drive) is a perfect choice for housing virtual machines for higher performance. 2 The installation of vpoint version 2.1 The installation of vpoint Before installing vpoint, 64bit operation system (namely 64bit version of Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 2008R2 or Windows 2012) shall have been already installed on the Host PC (Server). 14 3 How to create virtual machines Now let s move on to next step: creating virtual machines. The operation system of virtual machines could be Windows, Linux, Mac, or actually any system supported by VirtualBox. You can choose the right one as you need. You can create multiple copies of same system on the Host PC (Server), say 5 copies of Windows XP intended for 5 users. Or you can also create virtual machines of different operation systems on the Host PC (server), say 1 copy of Windows XP, 1 Windows 7, 1 Ubuntu, etc. 3.1 VirtualBox Setting. Open VirtualBox, there is a VirtualBox update information, click OK to close this window: 20 Attention:vPoint Currently only support this version (4.2.8) of virtualbox packed in vpoint Installation Package. Do not upgrade it to any higher version! Click File, then Preferences: 21

Choose Update, uncheck Check for updates : Choose General, Change the default machine folder: 22 23

3.5 The Clone of Virtual Machines More often, we will be using more than 1 copy of same Operation System, say Windows 7, on the Host PC (server). One quick way to have multiple copies of Windows 7 is to clone it. When you have finished installing Windows 7 and necessary configuration, we can move on to clone it. There are two way to clone virtual machines: VirtualBox clone function or export/import VirtualBox Clone function Open Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager, make sure the VM you want to clone is powered off, choose that VM, right click and choose Clone : 69

Input the name for the new virtual machine, and check Reinitialize the MAC address of all network cards to avoid the IP address conflict, then click Next : 70 Choose Full clone, and click Clone to start: 71

Clone start. 72 After the Clone finished, you can find the new virtual machine in the list: 73

VirtualBox export/import Open Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager, make sure the VM that you want to export is powered off, click File, and choose Export Appliance : Select the virtual machines that you want to export. Picture 75: 74 75

Choose a destination folder to export the virtual machine: Click Export to start: 76 77

Exporting: 78 After the exporting finished, we can find a win7.ova file in C:\Users\Administrator\Documents. That is the Virtual Machine we have exported: 79

Now we can use the ova file to import virtual machine. Open VirtualBox Manager, click File, choose Import Appliance : Click Open appliance : 80 81

Browse the folder that we have export the ova file to, select win7.ova and click Open : After select the ova file, click Next : 82 83

In the Appliance settings, check the Reinitialize the MAC address of all network cards to avoid the IP address conflict. You can also make change to other settings of virtual machine like Name, CPU, etc. click Import to start importing: Importing: 84 85

When the importing finished, we can find the new virtual machine win7_1 in the list: 86

3.6 Add more virtual hard drives to virtual machine In production environment, we may need more storage space (more often hard drives) to store user data. In the previous steps, we have set up one virtual hard drive for the virtual machine, which has been used by the operation system (drive C). So, adding more storage space means we need to add at least one more virtual hard drive to this virtual machine so that we can have storage space for user data. To store user data in a different virtual hard drive instead of drive C is also a safety measure to protect the user data from damages as caused by system failure or a snapshot restoring operation. Click on the virtual machine for which you are going to add virtual hard drive, then Settings, Storage, Controller: SATA, click to add hard disk: 87

Choose Create new disk : 88 Choose the type of the new virtual hard drive. The default VDI is OK: 89

Select the type of virtual hard disk you want to create: Set the size of hard disk. Then click 90 Create : 91

When it is done, you can see a new hard drive is attached to the SATA Controller. Click OK to close this window: 92 After all these have been done, we still need to log on to the virtual machine to activate the newly added virtual hard drive.

Start the virtual machine with newly added virtual hard drive. Click Start, Control Panel, Administrative tools, then Computer management : In the popup window, choose Disk Management : 93 94

A window called Initialize Disk will pop up. Click OK. A new disk Disk 1 will appear in the drive list. The status is Unallocated : 95 Right Click the Unallocated Disk and choose New Simple Volume : 96

A new window called New Simple Volume Wizard will pop up. Click Next : 97 Choose a volume size, the default size is the total space of the disk. Then click Next : 98

Assign a drive letter, then click Next : Select the setting to format this volume, click Next :

Click Finish to complete the wizard: 101 You can see a New Volume (E:) is available now: 102

3.7 Take Snapshots and restore Snapshots of Virtual Machines Operation Systems like Windows may suffer from various kinds of problems like system failure or virus affection. VirtualBox has a backup function called Snapshot. We can take a snapshot for the system when we have installed all the programs and have done all the configurations. Since VirtualBox will take snapshot for the whole machines (including all hard drives), we need remove all thevirtual Drive except Drive C (system drive) before taking snapshot we do not want the other drives with user data to be affected by the snapshot. Go to the Settings of virtual machines, click on Storage, click system drive win7.vdi : to remove all the drives except the 103

Leave the system drive win7.vdi, then click OK : 104 Then go back to VirtualBox Manager, choose the virtual machines that we are going to take snapshot of. Click on the Camera button: 105

The popup window shows Snapshot Name and you can also input some words as Snapshot Description. Click OK to finish. Now you can see Snapshot 1 in the list: 106 When you finish the setting, there is a snapshot available: 107

After the Snapshot is done, we need to add back the removed virtual drive. Just like the way we add second drive (data drive) to the virtual machines, we need to go to the Settings, and then Storage. Here we need to click Choose existing disk : 108 Go to the folder, and add the virtual drive we have removed earlier: 109

Now you can see the virtual drive is back: 110 When the virtual machines suffer a system failure or corruption, we can click to restore the snapshot. Remember, a newly restored virtual machine is of settings without the second hard drive. So we need add back the second hard drive. Just follow the steps above to accomplish this. 111

In the window pop up, click Restore to start: 112

4 The vpoint Console & User Accounts Setting Up vpoint Console is the VM and User Account management center for Diana. We can use it to set up user accounts and assign virtual machines to the users. Double click vpoint Console icon to open it: 113 Legends and functions of vpoint Console: Button for stopping vpoint: when vpoint is running, click on this button will stop the running of vpoint; when vpoint is stopped, this button will be a start button (a triangle), and click on it will start vpoint. VM refresh button: if a new VM is created while vpoint is in running status, we can use this refresh button to include this new VM to the control of vpoint, thus it can be assigned to Diana users. vpoint user accounts data import button. Create multiple VMs by importing. VM power on button: if VMs need to be powered on before Diana users logging in, we can select those VMs (the Select column) and then click on this power on button. VM power off button: use this button to power off selected VMs. VM name This column shows the name of VM OS Type This column shows the type of VM operation system 32/64 This column shows the version of VM operation system, 32bit or 64bit

Status This column show the status of VM: a grey square stands for Power Off, while a green dot is for Power On. Terminal This column shows whether this VM is connected by a Diana terminal or not. Locked Select Reset This column shows whether this VM is in the control of vpoint or not. When the status is Lock, we can click on it to unlock the VM from vpoint control. After that, the VM is back to the control of VirtualBox Manager, thus we can use VirtualBox Manager to make changes to the settings of VM or other maintenance work. When it is done, we can click this column again to lock this VM to vpoint so that it can be available to Diana users. This column is used to make selection of VMs. Selected VMs can be powered off or powered on (depending on their current status) by click on the VM Power On button or VM Power Off button. When a VM is crashed (blue screen, freezing, etc), we can click on Reset button to power off it. Local Host : click on it will show the list of all VMs hosted on this server. In picture below, we can see four VMs there. 114

4.1 Create Diana accounts User Account : there are two types of User Accounts. One is Administrator, while the other is Users. Administrator by default has access to all VMs. Users have only access rights to the VM(s) assigned to him. Right click on Administrator. In the pop-up, choose New Administrator : 115 A new user unnamed will show in the list: 116

Click on the name to change name. In this example, we change it to sunde, type in password, and then click on OK to save: 117 Users are common Diana users who only have access rights to those VMs that have already assigned to them. The steps to create User are the same as those of creating administrator users. Right click on Users. In the pop-up, choose New User : 118

When a User is created, choose the VM to be assigned to him in Machine(s) denied to be accessed list, and then click on the key to move it to the Machine(s) allowed to be accessed list. Normally, we only need to assign only one VM to one Diana user. Of cause, you can also assign multiple VMs to a certain Diana user The usage of refresh button The vpoint service starts automatically when the operating system starts. If we create new virtual machine, finish the setting of the virtual machine, we can click refresh button machine to vpoint VMs list. to add the virtual Attention: before you click refresh button, make sure the virtual machine is powered off in VirtualBox.

4.3 Create multiple VMs by importing Attention: Make sure the space is enough for the virtual machines you want to import, if one virtual machine takes 10GB, for 10 virtual machines, you d better choose a space more than 120GB as the VM folder. And, remember to generate a random MAC address for every virtual Machine in VirtualBox manager after you have imported the Virtual Machine, to avoid any possible IP address conflict. Open vpoint Console, and make sure the vpoint service is started like this status, click to open Create multiple VMs by importing : 120

Click to browse the path where you have put the ova file: 121 Choose the ova file that you want to import and click open. Make sure there is no blank in the path of ova files. For example, C:\ovafile is OK, C:\ova file doesn t work: 122

Click to select the folder where to store these virtual machines, make sure there is no blank in the path too. Select the type of Virtual Hard Disk, vmdk is the default type of Virtual Hard Disk, other type is OK too. Set the number of CPUs and Ram size for Virtual Machine. The biggest RAM size is Set the number of VM you want to import, and input the Prefix of VM name. When you finish the setting, click OK to start import process. 123

Importing, it will take 3-5 minutes for one Virtual Machine: 124 After the import process finished, open VirtualBox Manager, you need to generate a new random MAC address in the network setting for every virtual machine to avoid any possible IP address conflict. 125

After you generate a new MAC address, you can start the Virtual Machine and change the Computer name in Virtual Machine: 126

4.4 Import user accounts data Attention: You must create the virtual machines before importing user accounts, and make sure the virtual machines name is input correctly in the profile. Make sure every virtual machine runs normally in VirtualBox manager, then power off all the virtual machines in the VirtualBox manager. In vpoint console, click to refresh the VM list. 127 Open the file which is in the compressed vpoint installation package. For example, if you want to import 10 users data, set Num=10. Then you need to set the users name, for example user1, user2, user3..., and set the password for these users, for example 123.

At last, you need to set the VM name which the user can access, make sure the VMs have been created in VirtualBox and listed in vpoint console, if this user can access more than one VM, the name can be separate by comma, for example, Account1=user1;123; win71,win72,win73;,then user1 can access win71,win72,win73, three VMs. 128 When you finish editing the profile, you can click this file, then the users data is imported. in vpoint console to browse the profile, and open 129

The users data has been imported: 130

5 Setting Up of Diana Terminal Please make sure that you have connected monitor, keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet cable to Diana Terminal before you power on Diana. Server List will show up when Diana is powered on and initialized. 131 Server with name sunde-pc as shown in the list is the Host PC (Server) on which we have installed vpoint. Choose it and click Log In. Enter User Name and Password and then press Confirm : 132

The coming up new window show all the virtual machines which have been assign to user sunde. Picture 133: 133 Choose one virtual machine from the list and then click Connect. You will now be connected to this virtual machine. If its original status is Power Off, a Connect click will automatically start the virtual machine.

Picture below shows the Setup page of Diana. You can press Setup button as shown in Picture 131 to come to this page. 134 Here users can set up the way Diana getting its IP address, screen resolution, language, Server IP, etc.

6 How to uninstall vpoint There are two ways to uninstall vpoint. One is to run vpoint Installation Package and when the following window pops up, choose Remove to uninstall vpoint. The other way is to go to Control Panel, and then Programs and Features. From the program list, find vpoint and click on it. When it starts, choose Remove, and then click Next : Click OK to confirm un-installation:

Uninstalling process will begin. VirtualBox will also be removed (if you want to reinstall vpoint later, you can keep VirtualBox). Click Next to continue: Select Remove:

Click Remove : 139 Click Ignore : 140

Click Finish : 141 Click No to restart later: 142

When the vpoint uninstall process complete, you can click Finish to restart: 143

7 Appendix I: Add Shared Folders to the virtual machine In production environment, we may need to have a storage space where all users (virtual machines) can access files which are shared among all the users (or group of users). In the VDI solution, we can achieve this by creating a shared folder in the host PC (Server) hard drive and then share it among the users (or group of users). In the settings page of virtual machine, click on Shared Folders, and then click on the Add symbol: Choose the location:

Browse the folder and click OK : 146 Choose Auto-mount. Then click OK to finish: 147

We can see in the Folders List, the folder we ve just chosen is shown: Start the virtual machine, we can see sharedfolder ( \\vboxsrv) (F:) as Network Drives:

8 Appendix II Modify the image quality of Diana When playing high-definition video, the Diana will take up a lot of network bandwidth. So the vpoint server compresses the video signal before sending it to Diana. The default compression ratio is 60%. However, if only few Diana play video, we can adjust this value to a maximum of 100%. Open the VirtualBox installation path: C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox, there is a profile ServerProperty. 150 Open the profile ServerProperty with notepad. 151

[ImageQuality] refer to the image quality of Diana. Quality=60 is the default value, we can change it to any higher value like 65, 70, 80, 90 or 100 the most. Restart the server to take effect. 152 The effect of the other parameters in ServerProperty : MachineOpenMode ShutDown =0, the virtual machines will not automatically start when the server powers on =-1, the virtual machine never shut down no matter how long the Diana terminal disconnected from it =1, all the virtual machines start automatically when the server powers on. =1~60 (minutes), the virtual machine will shut down if the Diana terminal disconnected from it for more than the time set
