1 For assistance please contact the AIMS Help Desk: , In this document An AIMS Virtual Machine, or virtual PC, is a copy of Microsoft Windows running on a server at a remote location. This server actually hosts many virtual sessions, so your own virtual PC is not alone, but instead shares some very high performance hardware with many other virtual PC users. This reduces costs in a couple of ways. First, it lets us use modest computers as terminals since they really only need to show an image of what s going on back at the server rather than actually run Word, Outlook, etc., itself. Second, it allows for better performance and ease of maintenance since many virtual PCs are all contained within one high performance server. 2 Connecting to Your Virtual Machine Before you begin, please refer to Figure 3 on page 3. If what is shown in that figure is what you see when your computer starts, you are using a Thin PC and you should skip to Step 3 on page 3. Otherwise, continue here. Locate and double click the VMware Horizon Client icon on your desktop shown in Figure 1. Figure 1 In the window that appears, the connection server will appear as an icon with the caption view.aims.wisc.edu as shown in Figure 2. Double-click this icon. Figure 2 In the login window that appears, enter your user name into the User name: field and the corresponding password into the Password: field. Verify that the Domain: selected is AIMS, then click Login as shown in Figure 3. Note: this is the same user name and password you use to log into your computer. 3 Figure 3 For your first login, you may want to change the Display option to Window - Small. This will launch your VM in a small window that can be resized. Refer to Figure 4, and right-click your Virtual Desktop s icon. Then, on the pop-up context menu, hover over the Display choice to open the sub menu. Then click on Window - Small. The menu will close with your click. Note: On subsequent logins, feel free to choose Full Screen or All Monitors (if you have more than one display, VMware will remember your last setting so there is no need to do this every time.) 4 As shown in Figure 5, double click the icon to launch your Virtual Desktop. Note: The caption under your Virtual Desktop s icon will indicate your own unit name. Figure 5 While VMware Horizon Client prepares your virtual desktop, you will see the window shown in Figure 6. Do not click anything. 5 Next, you will see the Windows 7 Welcome screen of your virtual desktop in a small window like that shown in Figure 7, or full-screen if you are on a Thin PC. Figure 7 As you would on a physical machine, please wait until your login script has completed as indicated by a message like that in Figure 8. You can either click OK or let the window disappear on its own. Note: Your first login will take longer than subsequent logins, since your profile is being created. 6 You are now in your virtual desktop. Please see the last page of this document if you need assistance setting up your or adding a network printer. When you are done with your session, click the Start orb, then click the arrow to the right of the Shut down button. Next, click the Restart option on the pop-out menu as shown in Figure 9. Note: Do not click the Shut down button. Figure 9 If you are on a thin client, the dialog shown in Figure 10 will appear. Click Shutdown to turn off your physical machine. Your virtual machine will remain powered on and available for maintenance. If you are not on a Thin PC, as the virtual PC restarts, its window will close and the local copy of Windows may be used or shut down the computer in the normal manner. 7 Changing Your Network Password If the light blue VMware View Menu shown in Figure 11 is not pinned to the top of your screen, move your mouse to the top of your screen to display it.
