One of a series of eclectic notes on how to do things on the E&PS Network by Jim Connolly (Network Administrator), Updated 1-Sept-2001 The purpose of this document is to list all of the software available for general use on the Local Area Network (LAN) in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Most of this software is installed on the Windows NT 4.0 workstations in the Computer Lab in the department. Some software is licensed for use only on those workstations, and some may be used on any Windows NT or Windows 95/98 system connected to the network. The names of the programs are listed below. Clicking on the names will take you to more detailed information about that program. Note that as of this writing, this document is not complete (i.e., some of the links will take you to nowhereland). When it is completed (which I estimate to be by mid-october), all the links will work and there will be an Adobe Acrobat document containing the same information. For anyone wanting to print the information, it is strongly suggested that you print from the Acrobat version because it will let you control how many pages will print. This HTML (web -based) version is basically a very long document indexed so that you can jump around in it by clicking on links. Most browsers will print all of the document. This usually results in printing lots more pages than you really want (which you then must pay for). Feedback and suggestions for additions and improvements to this page are always welcomed (particularly for some of the more specialized software in which I have limited experience). It has been setup for students who use our network exclusively as a location where they access their . There is a separate document which explains how to setup and use Eudora for your , but first-time users are encouraged to use Mulberry as an alternative to Eudora. If you check from a variety of locations on campus (i.e., the CIRT pods) or from home through a dialup connection, you will be better off using Mulberry which is part of the CIRT-supported Mirada suite of Internet programs. Mulberry is supported by CIRT and works best for multiple users so is recommended over Eudora, particularly for new users. We will keep Eudora available for students who are already setup and using it. For students who want to convert from Eudora to Mulberry, Jim Connolly or the computer TA, Melissa Pfeffer, can help you in switching. GEOrient (Simple free program for making Stereonet plots)

4 Page 4 of 6 Mulberry is UNM's preferred client software, and it is part of the "Mirada" suite of Internet software. For all students who have used Eudora on our workstations in the past, we are recommending converting your client to Mulberry. Eudora will still work, but it is possible that UNM may not support POP mail for too long into the future, making the conversion mandatory. Mulberry is installed on all of the workstations in the lab which are capable of running it (all of the NT systems and most of the Macs). For those systems which are not capable of running it (old Win based systems and older Macintosh systems), Telnet and Pine are available for checking . Mulberry is an IMAP mail client. With IMAP, all of a user's mailboxes, address books, and mail configuration files are stored on the mail server at CIRT. With POP mail (the protocol used by Eudora Lite), all user address books, and configuration files are stored on the user's system and, by default, all mail is downloaded to the local system and removed from CIRT's system. The advantage of IMAP is that you can check your mail with Mulberry from anywhere (i.e., the lab, your home system, or the CIRT computer pods) and everything is the same. The disadvantage is that you need to be continuously connected and your mail client performance is dependent on the performance of your network connection. Bottom line here is that IMAP (i.e. Mulberry) works best when connected to a reliable and relatively high-speed network. Mulberry's advantages over Pine (the text -based client formerly supported by CIRT and still available through Telnet) are legion. They include: Ease in converting and accessing attachments, graphical user interface and ability to display messages formatted in a variety of formats (plain text, formatted text, HTML, etc.), excellent and easy to use address books for both groups and individuals, very good multiple mailbox capabilities, and a very powerful search function for searching your messages. The advantages over Eudora are significant, but not overpowering, particularly for people who do not need total access to their from different locations. Compared to Eudora Lite, the address book and search capabilities are much better, there is a built-in spelling checker, and unlike Eudora, which automatically downloads attachments to your system (a possible security hazard), Mulberry lets you choose which attachments to download. Also, as part of the Mirada setup, you can choose to open attachments in a file viewer rather than the "native" application which made the attachment; this can minimize the spread of varous Word and Excel "macro" viruses. Mulberry, when installed as part of the Mirada suite, includes excellent documentation of various sorts. A 45-page Adobe Acrobat Document, "Using Mulberry at UNM" is probably all anyone ever needs -- it includes all of the basics plus a large section on how to configure Mulberry preferences to be customized for your use. Mulberry also includes some interactive computer-based training specifically developed for the UNM environment which is a quick way to learn the basics of the program. Important Mulberry Usage Notes: Don't change the default location for downloads on the workstations this will be set to either the c:\temp folder or the C:\Mirada\Mulberry\ Attachments\ folder. When getting an attachment, use the file location dialog and choose where you want it to go -- this will typically be your own folder on the L: drive. Changing the default location for attachments can create problems for other users. Netscape Communicator 4.x (Netscape's free Web browser with , News and HTML editing capabilities) RSI Rivertools

5 Page 5 of 6 (Specialized GIS tool for topographic and river network analysis of DEM data) Sigma Plot 2001 (Scientific plotting program with statistical data analysis capabilities) Telnet and Pine (for ) (Remote login software for accessing UNIX systems) WinZip (Client software for accessing files contained in compressed "ZIP" archives) Winsock FTP (Upload and download files from FTP sites) XWin32 (Graphical X-Win software for remote operation of UNIX systems) The latest version (5.0.3) of Starnet's X -Win32 has been installed on all of the NT Workstations in the lab and on several other systems from which remote access to the X-Windows servers is desired. This software is available for installation on systems in UNM's IP network (i.e., systems with an IP address xxx.xxx) as a licence from CIRT for $15.00 per seat. The software may be installed from a share on our server, but to activate it in anything but "Demo" mode, you must enter a valid license key acquired from CIRT. The new version of this software is a full-blown 32-bit program designed to be used in a multi-user environment. The advantage of this is that each user's configuration and settings for the program are saved and remembered for the next session. The disadvantage is that each user must set the program up to connect to the systems desired on each workstation. The section below explains how to set up and connect to the Sun Solaris UNIX network (geo-0012 or epswmdavis) in the EPS Department. Configuration of your Solaris environment is something entirely different and is not covered here. Configuring and Running X-Win32: 1. In the Start Menu -- Programs find the program group for X-Win and run X-Config. If you wish to

6 Page 6 of 6 read the online documentation before proceeding, click on the X-Win32 Help icon. Help is not available from within X-Config (although you can always go to the programs group and run it if you get confused). 2. A small Window with lots of tabs will pop up. First go to the tab labeled Window and select "Single" Window mode (changing from the default "Multi"). 3. Click on the tab labeled Sessions, and click on the Wizard button. The first box asks for the Host name: enter geo-0012.unm.edu, then click on Next. 4. The next box asks for the connection method: choose XDMCP, then click on Next. (This is the X -Windows display manager mode.) 5. The next box asks for the XDMCP mode: choose Query, then click on next. 6. The next box asks for the Name of Session: enter geo Make sure the box to start the session is not checked. 7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for epswmdavis and any other host sessions you wish to set up. When done, close the X-Config window. 8. In Start Menu -- Programs -- X-Win32 5.0, find and Run X-Win32. It should start in full screen mode and be blank. Click on the X-Win icon in the upper left corner of the screen, and from the menu which pops up, choose sessions and pick the session you want to run. 9. You will be presented with the logon screen (first username then password) for the Host system you want to access. From this screen you will be able to choose the Desktop Environment you wish do start in. This will vary depending on what is installed on the host, but in the case of our systems you will have a choice of the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) or the Open Windows Desktop. When logon is completed you will be logged in to the system of your choice using the desktop environment of your choice. 10. When you are done working, it is extremely important that you exit your session properly. Failure to do this can cause UNIX processes to remain running even though you are long gone contributing to significant decrease in system performance. Users of the UNIX network should consult with Peter Fawcett, Mousumi Roy or Dave Gutzler for the proper way to close a session, but basically you must logout from the host system (so that you have a blank X-Win32 screen) before you close X-Win32. This version of X-Win32 is a new one to us as of this writing (October, 2000), so we don't have a bug list or FAQs to post. The only documentation included with the program is in the online Help file, but it does explain much of the basics of what is going on and how to configure things while it assumes a moderate level of knowledge of UNIX windows environments.
