2 I will skip the creation of the Ubuntu server on aws using their ec2 console. This is a very easy step. Use Google if you are new to Amazon Web Services. Add new ports to your security group Go to your aws console and add the port 80(http), 443 (https), 3000 and 5432 (used later with passenger) to the security group for your server. It is done using the "security groups" option in the left side menu just edit the security group and add a custom port and make it available to the world Log into your server (I use Putty), (The following steps are taken mainly from the sites below but updated to remove errors or use a different DB and added steps that are missing) (best set but uses mysql) and Update your system Update your system, so you know you have the latest available packages for your system. sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade Install git and curl. sudo apt-get install git curl Install dependencies for gems. sudo apt-get install build-essential libxslt-dev libxml2-dev libmysqlclient-dev libpq-dev libsqlite3-dev libyaml-0-2 Fix sources issue open the file /etc/apt/sources.list in an editor sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list add the "universe" repository to the file deb precise main universe update system sudo apt-get update install sudo apt-get install libmysql-ruby

3 Also install the following dependencies if you want to enable OpenProject to generate images (recommended): Changed from the standard instructions (updated the versions) sudo apt-get install libmagickwand-dev libmagickcore-dev libmagickcore5-extra libgraphviz-dev libgvc6 or you could just run the following sudo apt-get install libmagickwand-dev It installs all the other modules as well and you do not have to worry about versions. Install the DB I am using postgresql so I have to modify a couple of the std instructions sudo apt-get install postgresql I did not install memcached Add the openproject admin user sudo groupadd openproject sudo useradd --create-home --gid openproject openproject sudo passwd openproject # passwd: password updated successfully >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> try this later >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Add the user so apache can run the web pages **** different from instructions sudo useradd --create-home --gid www-data openproject >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Create Production DB Configure your DBMS - I am using postgesql, We are only creating a prod environment sudo -u postgres psql postgres postgres=# CREATE ROLE openproject LOGIN ENCRYPTED PASSWORD 'passwordhere' NOINHERIT VALID UNTIL 'infinity'; postgres=# CREATE DATABASE openproject WITH ENCODING='UTF8' OWNER=openproject; postgres=# \q (you may want to change the default root passwords here as well or sometime soon)

4 Add Ruby through RVM As the openproject user su openproject -c "bash -l" (best to have two terminals going at this point, one for ubuntu and one for openproject...saving switching in and out) \curl -L bash -s stable source /home/openproject/.rvm/scripts/rvm Add following lines into profile file of the desired user: vi /home/openproject/.bash_profile cd $HOME source "~/.profile" source "/home/openproject/.rvm/scripts/rvm" (fyi the source command is like a run command) Use RVM to install Ruby rvm autolibs disable rvm install ignore errors - it works - takes a while Install bundler. gem install bundler Clone the OpenProject repository - takes a while to do the downloads git clone cd openproject git checkout stable Run bundler to install all gems - takes a while to do the downloads bundle install

5 Configure OpenProject In your openproject account Copy config/database.yml.example to config/database.yml. cd /home/openproject/openproject/config cp database.yml.example database.yml Edit database.yml and fill in your database username and password. vi database.yml my updates look like this >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> production: adapter: postgresql database: openproject host: localhost username: openproject password: mypassword encoding: utf8 >>>>>>>>>>>>> I commented out the dev and test options Configure notifications (using gmail account) by creating configuration.yml in openproject/config directory cp configuration.yml.example configuration.yml vi configuration.yml I uncommented and edited the production config >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> # production: _delivery_method: "smtp" smtp_enable_starttls_auto: true

Some plugins contains migrations. To migrate the database, run: RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rake db:migrate RAILS_ENV=production rake assets:precompile When you test you will use the rails web server, so you will need this next update. reverse it when you run under apache

8 vi /home/openproject/openproject/config/environments/production.rb add (change false to true) config.serve_static_assets = true Test the System and Run the App Restart your server from your Ubuntu session after all the changes just to clean things up sudo shutdown -r now login change to the openproject user and start the server and see if you can see a page on port 3000 using your web browser su openproject -c "bash -l" cd /home/openproject/openproject RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rails server (RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rails server d ) Use the d to start the server as a daemon Now open up a browser and go to your home page on port 3000 (the 2ec AWS console will tell you the IP address of your server) You should see the openproject home page You can log in as admin and the passwd is admin You will want to run the site using apache and not the more primitive ruby web server Install Apache As the Ubuntu users sudo apt-get install apache2 apache2-utils Check that you can see the default Apache page on your AWS server (you will find the ip address in the console) Fix root directory ownership of the www files sudo chown -R www-data /var/www/html/* sudo chgrp -R www-data /var/www/html/* Check that you can see the default home age from the internet

9 Set up Apache for OpenProject as the ubuntu user sudo apt-get install libcurl4-openssl-dev sudo apt-get install apache2-dev sudo apt-get install libapr1-dev sudo apt-get install libaprutil1-dev Free up memory for passenger install The server is very small and the passenger update will fail if there is not enough memory if you are using the free tiny aws server. sudo service postgresql stop sudo service apache2 stop login into openproject su openproject -c "bash -l" cd /home/openproject/openproject Install Passenger gem install passenger Compile Passenger for Apache This will take a while. Install ruby as one of the languages passenger-install-apache2-module ignore the warnings about lack of memory. (I am using the Tiny AWS server) I installed it for Ruby and python languages. If the install fails due to lack of memory, just stop a few more processes that you do not need at the moment. Update Apache2 Config using your ubuntu login cd /etc/apache2/mods-available create a passenger.load and passenger.conf file

10 sudo vi passenger.load add the line LoadModule passenger_module /home/openproject/.rvm/gems/ruby-2.1.0/gems/passenger /buildout/apache2/mod_passenger.so sudo vi passenger.conf add the lines <IfModule mod_passenger.c> PassengerRoot /home/openproject/.rvm/gems/ruby-2.1.0/gems/passenger PassengerDefaultRuby /home/openproject/.rvm/gems/ruby-2.1.0/wrappers/ruby </IfModule> Note. The version number of passenger changes. passenger may not be the version you install. Please check and update this. Reset the production.rd file reset the production.rd file as the openproject user sudo vi /home/openproject/openproject/config/environments/production.rb change true back to false config.serve_static_assets = false Enable necessary components on Apache - Mod and Site (as the Ubuntu user) sudo a2enmod passenger Create virtual host file using your ubuntu login Create virtual host file in /etc/apache2/sites-available sudo vi /etc/apache2/sites-available/openproject.conf add <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName DocumentRoot /home/openproject/openproject/public

11 RailsEnv production </VirtualHost> Note that the Server name is a dummy site. You can update this when you set it up in your hosts file or even better, in a DNS Edit the apache.conf file sudo vi /etc/apache2/apache2.conf and add <Directory /home/openproject/openproject/public> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks # This relaxes Apache security settings. AllowOverride all Require all granted # MultiViews must be turned off. Options -MultiViews </Directory> Enable openproject virtual host file sudo a2ensite openproject Disable default site sudo a2dissite 000-default sudo chgrp -R www-data /home/openproject/openproject/public sudo chmod -R g+r /home/openproject/openproject/public Restart your server just to make sure everything starts up as expect sudo shutdown r now Check that apache2 is running check your site on port 80
