It s all Done with Mirrors Patterns and OCL KMF Kent Modelling Framework D.H.Akehurst and O.Patrascoiu
Goal Model Implementation
MDA Goal Meta-Model Specification Tool
Code Generation Is a Transformation But a special case mapping from concepts to textual language Templates Strings with slots for parameter values Provides quick way to write and visualise the target of a Model=>Code transformation Requires navigation over meta-model expressions Requires construction of strings
OCL Gives good navigation over model expressions Can be used to construct strings We have an executable implementation Use this as a template language A proper template language would be better
Patterns Move from Assembly to today's programming languages is due to behavioural patterns. Compilers map constructs to patterns of Assembler Today s patterns are also structural GOF, Visitor, Factory, Observer Repository, Accessor/Mutator, ClassImpl/Interface Enumerations! (implement java.util.enumeration) They are well-understood and widely used why should they be programmed manually? What can / can t be done with Patterns?
Scalable Patterns GOF patterns must be implemented in a scalable manner E.g. Factory Pattern Factory per Model Factory per Package Factory per Class How to link multiple factories!
KMF: Kent Modelling Framework Model (XMI) Libraries OCL Templates (Patterns) import Implementation
(OCL) Templates ~ 30 OCL expressions / templates Can be re-written to provide your own favourite pattern / style. can be used to generate from other models don t have to use UML MM as a source (show some examples)
Libraries Browser Tree View of Repository OCL Expression Evaluator Generic XMI Save / Load Linked Association Ends Property Editor
XMI Loader Handles Stereotypes looks for stereotype name in repository set properties according to tagged value definitions additional properties added using tagged value values
Examples Used KMF to provide implementations of many different models UML 1.X, UML 2.0, MOF BPEL, OCL constraints to validate model RM-ODP Viewpoint models RM-ODP tool for specification of Distributed Systems Demo KMF
Transformations Model 1 Model of Mapping Model 2 between 1 and 2 OCL Templates Implementation
Relations Transformations are a relation between source and target components / models Use mathematical concept of relations Extend to define a hierarchy of relations relations contain sub-relations Declarative specifications Generate Transformers via patterns Complex mappings require constraint solver! Simple ones can be done without
Model Transformation Examples Visual Language definition Diagram Spatial Relationship Abstract Textual Language Text Tokens Abstract Viewpoint Consistency RM-ODP viewpoints Refinement / Code Generation Model (UML) Code (KMF itself!) Language Translation EDOC-ECA Breeze (DSTC) BPEL Timed Automata CSP
Example: State Machine Editor a w y b x c z d
Three Models Diagram Spatial Relationship Abstract Syntax Models and Mappings defined in a UML tool
Conclusion Much can be done with Patterns OCL is essential for Meta-modelling Constraints, well-formedness model navigation (similar role to XPath) What can t be done? More work to be done on behavioural constructs generation patterns from modelled behaviour
