2 Model: IPR10 Quick Start and Application Notes The IPR10 is an access router with asynchronous serial RS-232 interface for use with dial-up modems, leased line modems or ISDN Terminal Adapters. The device may be applied in one of three modes: Internet Access mode, Remote Dial-in mode, or Lan-to-Lan mode. This Application Note (AN) is specific for Internet Access mode. PC settings: The PC must be running MS Windows 98/98SE/ME/NT4/2000/XP, have a configured network interface card (NIC), and installed with the Net Device Manager software version For this example, we will use the private IP address, Class C, of /24. The PC's TCP/IP settings are shown in the following Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties screen. Use your ISP's recommended DNS server IP. Connection: The connection of the IPR10 requires an Ethernet cross cable when connecting to a PC or a straight cable when connecting to a HUB. For most modern switches, if they support the auto-mdix connection, it doesn't matter what cable is used as they will negotiate a link with either PC or other HUB. The power adapter for the IPR10 supplies 12V AC voltage. A 12VDC adapter can be used if the center pin is positive. Set the mode switch on the IPR10 to 'Setup' and apply power. Start the NetDevice Manager software. The software uses the Cisco router discovery protocol to find the IPR10, no matter what the current IP setting of the IPR10 is.

3 This is the initial window that will open if the IPR10 device does not have an IP that matches the PC's IP subnet. In the example we set it to This IP will now be the default gateway address for our LAN network. Click 'OK' and the main NetDevice Manage (NM) window will open. Note: To reset the device to factory defaults, select the 'Load Settings' button and select the load factory default option.

4 Now we will continue to configure the IPR10. From the NM main page, we click the 'General Settings' button. We need to make sure the IP address and subnet mask are properly set. Click the port function radio for 'Internet Access', and then click the 'Internet Access Settings' button. In this screen, fill in the ISP information, ie. Phone number, username, and password. Leave the external IP alone, as the ISP will assign that IP by their own DHCP server. Click 'OK' when completed.

5 Now proceed with the 'Modem Settings' from the main NM window. Here is where the modem settings are done. Choose a good fast baud rate, or even faster up to bps. Don't worry if your modem is not that fast as the speed can negotiate down automatically. If your modem is in the 'Select Modem' pull down menu, select it. If not, enter the 'Initial String' manually as recommended from the modem's user manual. The example here is for an Intracom Netmod ISDN TA. When finished, click 'OK'. Leave the 'Dialup /Hangup Settings' alone. Or you can modify the disconnect timeout to a shorter or longer time. ML-PPP requires the IPR20, two port router.

6 From the NM main window, click 'LAN DHCP Server'. The IPR10 can act as a DHCP server for your entire LAN. If the PCs on your LAN set the TCP/IP Properties to 'Obtain an IP address automatically', then the DHCP server will automatically assign them an IP address from the available address pool. You will then be able to enter the address pool. The IP address mapping reserves is a way to fix an IP address to a particular MAC. You can find the MAC address of a PC by opening a command window and entering the command 'ipconfig /all'. The NIC's MAC address will be displayed as a group of 6 bytes. The first three bytes represent the IEEE assigned manufacture's ID while the last three bytes are assigned by the manufacturer to that particular device. No two MAC addresses should be the same in the whole world. If you wish to completely set static (fixed) IP addresses to all your network devices or if you have another server to do the DHCP service on your LAN, then you will want to disable the DCHP function of the IPR10. Finish up by clicking 'OK'. The remaining buttons 'Routing Table', 'IP Mapping", and 'Client Filter Settings', require no immediate settings to start operating the device and providing Internet Access to the LAN. The routing table is required for Lan-to-Lan applications or if the LAN has more than one router. The IP mapping function allows one of your private IP devices to be accessed from the public network (if your WAN IP is known). The Client filter settings allow you to control access to different Internet Protocols by your client PCs. You can allow or deny access to HTTP, SMTP, FTP, etc. Now do 'Save & Exit'. Return the mode switch to 'Normal'. Connect the modem and power up everything.
