Using a Ten Volt Module (TVM) Kit to Control LED and Fluorescent Fixtures Application Note #234 Revision A August 2008 What is a TVM Kit? A Ten Volt Module (TVM) kit, part number HW-TVMKIT-YYY is a box that contains that right set of tools that allow you quickly put together a system that controls fluorescent or LED lighting. This kit contains the base parts needed to control various LED and fluorescent load types with TVMs. Such load types are: Tridonic DSI DALI broadcast 0-10V sink 0-10V source Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) When would I need it? This kit is not designed for products that require phase control or high voltage dimming. The TVM kit is ideal when your lighting fixtures use a low voltage signal ballast or LED driver. The TVM kit can be used in various applications such as marine, residential and commercial. Some of the Lutron product families that can be used in conjunction with TVMs are HomeWorks, GRAFIK 4000, GRAFIK 5000/6000. Kit Contents The HW-TVMKIT-YYY contains all the essential parts needed to get you started controlling LED or fluorescent lighting. For maximum flexibility, TVM units are not included in the kit. (1) Addressing Harness (1) Power Supply (2) DIN Rail End Stops (1) DIN Rail (1) LV Barrier (1) ISO2 TVM units are NOT INCLUDED DIN Rail and Mounting Hardware DIN Rail End Stops ISO2 Power Supply Addressing Harness LV Barrier and Mounting Hardware Lutron Technical Support Center
Addressing Harness The addressing harness provides communication between the all the Ten Volt Modules (TVMs) in a panel. It not only passes information from the module interface but also gives each TVM a hard address. The first connector is tied to the ISO2, while each subsequent connector goes to a TVM. Since every TVM can control two zones of lighting, each connector takes up two lighting zones in the system. For example: Connector 2 takes up zones 1 and 2 on module 1 in the panel while connector 3 is tied to zones 3 and 4 on that very same module. ISO2 (GRX-TVM-ISO2) The ISO2 provides isolated power to the TVMs. Proper operation requires the use of an external power supply, such as the one included with the kit. Each ISO2 can provide no more than 750 ma of current equal to 6 fully loaded TVMs or up to 12 partially loaded TVMs. TVM2 (GRX-TVM2) This unit can be considered as the dimmer in a TVM system. It can control two zones of LED or fluorescent lighting fixtures through a low-voltage signal that can either be PWM, Tridonic DSI, DALI broadcast or 0 to 10V. Each TVM can sink/source up to 50 ma per output on the control signal. Installation 1. Mount the LV Barrier into the panel. The barrier takes the place of the existing barrier. Remove existing barrier by loosening each screw. The new LV Barrier comes in two pieces. Fasten each piece to its respective mounting holes as shown below. 2. Mount the Din Rail using the upper set of mounting holes, as shown below. 3. Mount the Power supply into the panel. The power supply should be mounted in the space where the last module is usually installed. This is module number 8 for HomeWorks PNL-8 panels, or module 1 in commercial panels. 4. Snap in the end stops. 5. Snap the ISO2 unit into the DIN rail. 2 Lutron Technical Support Center
6. Connect the class 2 power leads from the power supply to the ISO2. These leads go to terminals A and C of the ISO 2 located on the top of the ISO2 when the unit is mounted correctly. The power is 24 V, so there is no polarity. 7. Connect the last connector on the RPM harness labeled ISO TVM to the top of the ISO2. Be sure to slide this connector on gently, then firmly fix it into place. 8. Snap the Ten Volt Modules (TVMs) into the DIN rail. 9. Attach the addressing harness to the bottom of the ISO2 then to each subsequent TVM. Remember that the first TVM is automatically associated with circuit 1 and 2 of your program. 10. Connect driver circuits to the + and - terminals located on the top of the TVMs. Be sure to observe proper polarity. Terminals A and C are output 1 and terminals D and F are output Connect the primary side of the transformer to Live power. Use the L and N terminals for the top RPM in the panel. DIN Rail Stop TVM2 (not included in kit) ISO2 LV Barrier DIN Rail Addressing Harness Low Voltage Transformer RPM Harness Controlling TVMs with HomeWorks TVMs can be used in conjunction with an RPM to not only dim a ballast/led driver but also to provide a means to turn the ballast/driver on and off. The TVM provides the low-voltage control signal to the ballast while the RPM switches the circuit ON and OFF. Each TVM can control 2 circuits, so you will need one RPM module for every 2 TVMs. Setting the Load Type in the HW software Setting up a TVM compatible load type is as easy as setting up any other. Choose the appropriate load type from either the floor plan or load schedule screen. For example, select load type FL 0-10V for 0-10V dimming or select FL PWM for PWM dimming. 3 Lutron Technical Support Center
Assigning Ten Volt Module (TVM) controlled loads to an RPM in the HW software (version or earlier): If you are using an HWI-MI, then create a panel using any panel that will hold 7 RPMs. Next add up to 7 4U modules (4A modules can be used for up to 300 W of LEDs per output) in address positions 1-7 in the panel. You will need to create such a panel in the software whether you are actually using modules or not. The physical 8th position in the panel is reserved for the mounting of TVMs. If you are using a Circuit Selector, see the document titled HomeWorks Interactive GP/LP/XP Panel Support for details on creating a representation of an LP or GP panel in the Panel Assignment Screen. When assigning the TVM loads as 0-10V, DSI, DALI or PWM to the modules on the Addressing screen, it will indicate that the interface is undetermined, but the project will still compile and upload correctly. 4 Lutron Technical Support Center
Addressing Ten Volt Modules (TVMs) in the panel The TVMs themselves are addressed via the harness that is connected to them. The first connector on the harness always goes to the ISO2. The second connector is then considered to be the first communication connector, representing addresses 1 and 2.Whether you are using GP dimming cards or modules determines how the addressing is set up (see table below). For GP dimming cards, you need 2 cards for each TVM the dimming cards at addresses 1 and 2 will control ballasts connected to TVM at address 1. When using modules, 1 module will support 2 TVMs to control ballasts on a TVM at addresses 1, you will need an LP/RPM module at address 1 (using output 1 and 2). To control ballasts on a TVM at address 2, you would use that same LP/RPM at address 1 (using output 3 and 4). LED driver types There are many LED drivers available on the market today. When specifying LEDs, it important to understand what each driver requires. TVMs can control most LED drivers available, as long as you do not exceed the 50 ma sink / source rating of each output. In general, there are two types of LED drivers. Those that need to have an air gap off and those that have an internal shut-off. Some drivers can turn their outputs off when you dim all the way to 0% while others simply go the low-end light level. Drivers with internal shut-off With these types of drivers, you may not require an additional module or relay in order to turn off the LEDs. Whether your load type is PWM or 0-10V, these drivers are designed to turn off the output when you dim down to 0%. The best way to recognize these drivers is to read the manufacturers specifications or to test them. These drivers typically require a permanent supply or live feed, only a dimming signal is required. Drivers requiring an air-gap These drivers do not turn off when dimming to their low-end. They typically remain at their lowest light level when dimmed to a minimum. 5 Lutron Technical Support Center
