2 To the Learner Hey! This is your time to learn about figures for this module falls on simple geometry. You will discover some kinds of polygons. You will draw and color during the activity. Let s Learn This Identifying the different kinds of plane figures. Let s Try This Have you gone to the city? How about reading stories about the life in the city? Now, read this simple story. Lucia and Gary went to visit their uncle and cousins in the city. When they arrived at the city proper, they saw signs like the following: SCHOOL CROSSING STOP ONE WAY BUS STOP Can you name the shapes of the different signboards they have seen? Do the shapes have meanings? How important these signboards on the street? Do we need to observe and follow these signs? Why? 231

3 Let s Study This Look at the plane figures below. Count the number of sides in each figure. rhombus parallelogram square trapezoid triangles quadrilateral pentagon hexagon heptagon octagon nonagon decagon circle The figures above are called plane figures because they don t have thickness. A plane is a mathematical term for a flat surface and takes any of the geometric plane in the family of simple closed shapes made up of segments called polygons. 232

4 A polygon is a closed plane figure formed by line segments. If polygons are closed plane figure, what could be the least number of lines that determine a polygon? Polygons are named according to the number of sides or angles they have. The number of sides is equal to the number of angles. Triangles have three sides. Quadrilaterals (square,, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid) have four sides. Pentagons have five sides. How many sides does a nonagon have? How about octagon? How about a circle? How many sides does it have? Is it a polygon? Let s Do This Write A inside the figure with 3 sides, B inside the figure with no sides, C inside the figure with 4 sides and D with more than 4 sides. 233

5 Let s Do More Identify the different figures and count how many. Let s Remember This Plane figures are figures that have no thickness. It includes the geometric plane in the family of simple closed shapes made up of segments called polygons. 234
