8 Chapter 5-1: The Ray Model of Light Text Notes Scientists have used several different models to understand light and its properties. Read page 168. Then in the spaces below, write what you know about each of these different models., Particle Model of Light Wave Model of Light Ray Model of Light Describe the Model How is the model used? Now read pages in the text, and answer the questions about the Ray Model of Light 1. What are the 3 things that can happen to a light ray when it hits an object or material? - the light may be absorbed (trapped in it) - the light may be reflected (bounce off it) - the light may be transmitted (pass through) 2. What are the 3 ways of classifying materials based on their ability to transmit light and images? - opaque - translucent - transparent 3. What is transparent? give an example of a transparent material draw a picture of light passing through a transparent material = allows light to pass through it freely. Objects can be seen clearly through transparent materials example: water, glass, air = most light rays get through, but they are scattered in all directions. Objects cannot be seen distinctly through these materials example: waxed paper, frosted glass Science 8 Workbook Ms. Jamieson
9 4. What is translucent? give an example of a translucent material = prevents any light from passing through. It may absorb or reflect, but does not transmit example: metal, wood, cement draw a picture of light passing through a translucent material 5. What is opaque? give an example of an opaque material 6. Make diagrams using rays to show how a shadow is formed by an object blocking light rays a) First show an object that is close to the light source and far from a screen b) Now show an object that is far from the light source and close to the screen 7. 10 Classifying Materials Transparent materials let light rays pass through and an image can be seen. Translucent materials let light rays pass through but scatter light so an image is not formed. Opaque materials block both light and images. Science 8 Workbook Ms. Jamieson
