On a relation between the Szeged index and the Wiener index for bipartite graphs arxiv: v1 [math.co] 4 Oct 01 Lily Chen, Xueliang Li, Mengmeng Liu Center for Combinatorics, LPMC-TJKLC Nankai University, Tianjin , China lily6061@16.com, lxl@nankai.edu.cn, liumm05@163.com Abstract TheWienerindexW(G)ofagraphGisthesumofthedistancesbetween all pairs of vertices in the graph. The Szeged index Sz(G) of a graph G is defined as Sz(G) = e=uv E n u(e)n v (e) where n u (e) and n v (e) are, respectively, the number of vertices of G lying closer to vertex u than to vertex v and the number of vertices of G lying closer to vertex v than to vertex u. Hansen used the computer programm AutoGraphiX and made the following conjecture about the Szeged index and the Wiener index for a bipartite connected graph G with n 4 vertices and m n edges: Sz(G) W(G) 4n 8. Moreover the bound is best possible as shown by the graph composed of a cycle on 4 vertices C 4 and a tree T on n 3 vertices sharing a single vertex. This paper is to give a confirmative proof to this conjecture. Keywords: Wiener index, Szeged index, bipartite graph. AMS subject classification 010: 05C1, 05C35, 05C90, 9E10. 1 Introduction All graphs considered in this paper are finite, undirected and simple. We refer the readers to [] for terminology and notation. Let G be a connected graph with vertex set V and edge set E. For u,v V, d(u,v) denotes the distance between u and v. The Wiener index of G is defined as W(G) = d(u,v). {u,v} V This topological index has been extensively studied in the mathematical literature; see, e.g., [4,6]. Let e = uv be an edge of G, and define three sets as follows: N u (e) = {w V : d(u,w) < d(v,w)}, 1
N v (e) = {w V : d(v,w) < d(u,w)}, N 0 (e) = {w V : d(u,w) = d(v,w)}. Thus, {N u (e),n v (e),n 0 (e)} is a partition of the vertices of G respect to e. The number ofverticesofn u (e),n v (e)andn 0 (e)aredenotedbyn u (e),n v (e)andn 0 (e),respectively. A long time known property of the Wiener index is the formula [5,13]: W(G) = n u (e)n v (e), e=uv E which is applicable for trees. Using the above formula, Gutman [3] introduced a graph invariant, named as the Szeged index as an extension of the Wiener index and defined by Sz(G) = n u (e)n v (e). e=uv E Randić[11] observed that the Szeged index does not take into account the contributions of the vertices at equal distances from the endpoints of an edge, and so he conceived a modified version of the Szeged index which is named as the revised Szeged index. The revised Szeged index of a connected graph G is defined as Sz (G) = e=uv E ( n u (e)+ n 0(e) )( n v (e)+ n 0(e) Some properties and applications of the Szeged index and the revised Szeged index have been reported in [1,8 10,14]. In [7], Hansen used the computer programm AutoGraphiX and made the following conjectures: Conjecture 1.1 Let G be a bipartite connected graph with n 4 vertices and m n edges. Then Sz(G) W(G) 4n 8. Moreover the bound is best possible as shown by the graph composed of a cycle on 4 vertices C 4 and a tree T on n 3 vertices sharing a single vertex. Conjecture 1. Let G be a bipartite connected graph with n 4 vertices and m n edges. Then Sz (G) W(G) 4n 8. Moreover the bound is best possible as shown by the graph composed of a cycle on 4 vertices C 4 and a tree T on n 3 vertices sharing a single vertex. ItiseasytoseethatSz (G) = Sz(G) = W(G)ifGisatree, which meansm = n 1. So, the second conjecture considers graphs with m n. This paper is to give confirmative proofs to the two conjectures. In fact, if G is a bipartite graph, then Sz (G) = Sz(G). Therefore, if we give a proof to Conjecture 1.1, then Conjecture 1. follows immediately. ).
Main results In [1], Gutman gave another expression for the Szeged index: Sz(G) = n u (e)n v (e) = µ x,y (e) e=uv E e=uv E {x,y} V where µ x,y (e), interpreted as contribution of the vertex pair x and y to the product n u (e)n v (e), is defined as follows: d(x,u) < d(x,v) and d(y,v) < d(y,u), 1, if or µ x,y (e) = d(x,v) < d(x,u) and d(y,u) < d(y,v), 0, otherwise. We first show that for a -connected bipartite graph Conjecture 1.1 is true. Lemma.1 Let G be a -connected bipartite graph of order n 4. Then with equality if and only if G = C 4. Sz(G) W(G) 4n 8 Proof. From above expressions, we know that Sz(G) W(G) = µ x,y (e) {x,y} V = {x,y} V {x,y} V d(x, y) ( ) µ x,y (e) d(x,y). Claim: For every pair x,y V, we have µ x,y (e) d(x,y) 1. In fact, if xy E, that is d(x,y) = 1, then we can find a shortest cycle C containing x and y since G is -connected. Then, G[C] has no chord. Since G is bipartite, the length of C is even. There is an edge e which is the antipodal edge of e = xy in C. It is easy to check that µ x,y (e ) = µ x,y (e) = 1. So the claim is true. If d(x,y), let P 1 be a shortest path from x to y and P be a second shortest path from x to y, that is, P P 1 and P = min { P P is a path from x to y and P P 1 }. Since G is -connected, P always exists. If there are more than one path satisfying the condition, we choose P as a one having most common vertices with P 1. 3
If E(P 1 ) E(P ) =, let P 1 P = C, and then E(P ) E(P 1 ) and all the antipodal edges of P 1 in C makes µ x,y (e) = 1. We also know that µ x,y (e) = 1 for all e E(P 1 ). Hence, µ x,y(e) d(x,y) d(x,y) > 1. If E(P 1 ) E(P ), then P 1 P = C, where C is a cycle. Let P i = P i C = x P i y. It is easy to see that E(P ) E(P 1 ), and the shortest path from x (or y) to the vertex v in P is xp x (yp y ) together with the shortest path from x (y ) to v in C; otherwise, contrary to the choice of P. So, all the antipodal edges of P 1 in C makes µ x,y (e) = 1. We also know that µ x,y (e) = 1 for all e E(P 1 ). Hence, µ x,y(e) = E(P 1 ) +d(x,y ) d(x,y)+1, which proves the claim. Now let C = v 1 v v p v 1 be a shortest cycle in G, where p is even and p 4. Actually, for every e E(C) we have that µ (e) = 1 for i = 1,,, p. Then vi,vp +i µ v (e) = C = p, that is, i,vp +i µ v (e) d(v i,vp +i i,v p +i ) = p. Combining with the claim, we have that Sz(G) W(G) ( ) n + p ( p ) 1 ( ) n + 4n 8. The last two equalities hold if and only if p = 4, n = 4 or 5. If n = 4,p = 4, then G is a C 4. If n = 5,p = 4, then G is a K,3, and in this case we can easily calculate that Sz(G) W(G) > 1. Thus, the equality holds if and only if G = C 4. Next we will complete the proof of Conjecture 1.1 in general. Theorem. Let G be a bipartite connected graph with n 4 vertices and m n edges. Then Sz(G) W(G) 4n 8. Moreover the bound is best possible as shown by the graph composed of a cycle on 4 vertices C 4 and a tree T on n 3 vertices sharing a single vertex. Proof. We have proved that the conclusion is true for a -connected bipartite graph. Now suppose that G is a connected bipartite graph with blocks B 1,B,,B k, where k. Let B i = n i. Then, n 1 + n + +n k = n+k 1. Since m n and G is bipartite, there exists at least one block, say B 1, such that n 1 4. Consider a pair {x,y} V. We have the following observations: Obs.1: x,y B i, and n i 4. For every e B j,j i,µ x,y (e) = 0, combining with Lemma.1, we have that ( ) µ x,y (e) d(x,y) = µ x,y (e) d(x,y) 4n i 8. {x,y} B i {x,y} B i (B i ) 4
Obs.: x,y B i, and n i =. In this case, ( ) µ x,y (e) d(x,y) = 0 = 4n i 8. {x,y} B i Obs.3: x B 1,y B i,i 1. Let P be a shortest path from x to y, and let w 1,w i be the cut vertices in B 1 and B i such that every path from a vertex in B 1 to B i must go through w 1,w i. By the proof of Lemma.1, we can find an edge e E(B 1 )\E(P) such that µ x,w1 (e ) = 1. Because every path from a vertex in B 1 to y must go through w 1, we have µ x,y (e ) = 1. We also know that µ x,y (e) = 1 for all e E(P). Hence, µ x,y(e) d(x,y) 1. We are now in a position to show that for all y B i \{w i }, we can find a vertex z B 1 \{w 1 } such that µ z,y(e) d(z,y). Since B 1 is -connected with n 1 4, there is a cycle containing w 1. Let C be a shortest cycle containing w 1, say C = v 1 v v p v 1, where v 1 = w 1, p is even. Set z = v p +1. By the proof of Lemma.1, we have that (B 1 ) µ z,w 1 (e) d(z,w 1 ) p. It follows that there are two edges e,e which arenot intheshortest pathfromz to w 1 such that µ z,w1 (e ) = 1,µ z,w1 (e ) = 1. Thus, µ z,y (e ) = 1,µ z,y (e ) = 1. Hence, µ z,y(e) d(z,y). If we fix B i, we obtain that ( ) µ x,y (e) d(x,y) (n 1 1)(n i 1)+(n i 1) = n 1 (n i 1). x B 1 \{w 1 } y B i \{w i } Obs.4: x B i,y B j,i,j,i j. Let P be a shortest path between x and y. If P passes through a block B l with n l 4, and B l P, then we have that µ x,y (e) d(x,y) 0. So, µ x,y (e) d(x,y) 1. Otherwise, ( ) µ x,y (e) d(x,y)) 0. x B i \{w i },y B j \{w j } Equality holds if and only if P passes through a block B l with n l = or n l 4, and B l P = 1. 5
From the above observations, we have that Sz(G) W(G) = µ x,y (e) {x,y} V = = {x,y} V k {x,y} V d(x, y) ( ) µ x,y (e) d(x,y) i=1 {x,y} B i + 1 ( ) µ x,y (e) d(x,y) + i j x B i \{w i } i 1,j 1y B j \{w j } k ( ) µ x,y (e) d(x,y)) k k (4n i 8)+n 1 (n j 1) i=1 j= = 4(n+k 1) 8k +n 1 (n n 1 ) = 4n 4k 4+n 1 (n n 1 ). j= x B 1 \{w 1 } y B j \{w j } ( ) µ x,y (e) d(x,y) Since n 1 +n + + n k = n+k 1, n 1 4,n i, for i k, we have that 4 n 1 n k +1, and k n 3. If k 5, then n 1 (n n 1 ) 4(n 4). Thus, 4n 4k 4+n 1 (n n 1 ) 8n 4k 0 8n 4(n 3) 0 = 4n 8. Equality holds if and only if n 1 = 4,n = n 3 = = n n 3 =, and B,B 3,,B n 3 form a tree T on n 3 vertices, which shares a single vertex with B 1. If k 4, then n 1 (n n 1 ) (n k +1)(k 1). If k =, then 4n 4k 4+(n k+1)(k 1) = 5n 13 4n 8. Equality holds if and only if n = 5, G is a graph composed of a cycle on 4 vertices and a pendant edge. If k = 3, then 4n 4k 4+(n k+1)(k 1) = 6n 0 4n 8. Equality holds if and only if n = 6, G is a graph composed of a cycle on 4 vertices and a tree on 3 vertices sharing a single vertex. If k = 4, then 4n 4k 4+(n k+1)(k 1) = 7n 9 4n 8. Equality holds if and only if n = 7, G is a graph composed of a cycle on 4 vertices and a tree on 4 vertices sharing a single vertex. Since G is a bipartite graph, n 0 (e) = 0, and thus Sz (G) = Sz(G). So we have the following corollary. 6
Corollary.3 [Conjecture 1.] Let G be a bipartite connected graph with n 4 vertices and m n edges. Then Sz (G) W(G) 4n 8. Moreover the bound is best possible as shown by the graph composed of a cycle on 4 vertices C 4 and a tree T on n 3 vertices sharing a single vertex. References [1] M. Aouchiche, P.
