1 Domain 4 Lesson 5 Area Common Core Standard: 7.G.6 Getting the Idea The area of a figure is the number of square units inside the figure. Below are some formulas that can be used to find the areas of common polygons. Formula Triangle A 5 1 bh, where b represents the base length and h represents the height. Parallelogram A 5 bh, where b represents the base length and h represents the height. Rectangle A 5 lw, where l represents the length and w represents the width. Square A 5 s, where s represents the length of a side. Diagram h b h b l s w Trapezoid A 5 1 ( b 1 1 b )h, where b 1 and b represent the base lengths and h represents the height. b 1 b h 5

2 Example 1 What is the area of this trapezoid? 6 in. Strategy Step 1 Step Solution Use the formula for the area of a trapezoid. Write the formula for the area of a trapezoid.
