1 Refraction What is a medium? Ex. Refraction refers to the bending of light as it changes medium. Light will always bend the same way in the same medium. Different media will bend light more or less depending on their optical density. Order the following media from less dense to more dense. Vacuum Air Water Glass Oil 1
2 2. Lateral Displacement Activity Instructions obtain a ray box and a rectangular block. Place the block along the line indicated and send the ray along the path indicated. Trace the block and the refracted ray before returning your equipment. 2
3 Place a coin on the bottom of the cup. Slide the cup away, stopping when you can't see the coin anymore. Get your partner to slowly fill the cup up with water. Switch with your partner. Describe what happened. Has the coin changed positions? Why can you now see the coin? 3
4 Refraction and Lenses Refraction is the when a ray changes mediums. Lenses are optical devices which take advantage of the refraction of light to 1. produces images real and 2. change the size of the image. Lenses have to be carefully constructed to produce clear images. Over the history of time, many different shapes with many different materials have been created but the most basic shapes are listed below. Match the following shape with the correct definition for lenses. note these terms are adjectives for the shape of the lens. Concave: hollowed or rounded inward like the inside of a bowl Convex: curved or rounded outward like the exterior of a sphere or circle Concave convex: a lens that has a concave section and a section that is convex. Convex and Concave Lenses: Which is converging and which is diverging? 1. Using the 3 slit cover in the ray box, aim the rays at both a concave and a convex lens such that they are perpendicular to each lens as indicated in the sketch below. 2. 10 That frosty mug full of A&W root beer seems to drain so quickly. What seems like a lot of root beer is actually a lot of glass. The deception is uncovered when the root beer mug is submerged in water. When looking at the mug above the water level, there appears to be a lot of root beer. But when looking at the mug below the water level, one observes the truth; the water surrounding the glass minimizes the effect of refraction and reveals the large quantity of glass. We've been deceived! 10
