9 Reflective materials Objects that reflect light well: Have smooth, shiny surfaces and are usually pale colours. Give clear images because they reflect light regularly. Objects that do not reflect light well: Have rough, matt surfaces and are usually dark colours. Give diffuse images (or do not give any images) because they reflect light irregularly. This is called scattering.
10 Think of as many uses of mirrors as you can. Explain why the mirror is important in each case. What is different about the way mirrors reflect light to the reflection of light by other surfaces?
11 What happens to the light which isn t reflected? Some may be absorbed (e.g. as heat). Some may be transmitted (e.g glass reflects a small amount of light, absorbs some of the rest and allows most of it to pass through.)
12 Investigation Investigate how the angle of incidence affects the angle of reflection. Record your results in the table. Angle of incidence (º) Angle of reflection (º)
13 Investigation Draw the symbol for a mirror on your page.
14 Investigation Place your mirror on top of this and shine a ray of light at the mirror. Make sure the mirror is vertical.
15 Investigation Put two crosses on the incident ray and two on the reflected ray.
16 Investigation Remove all the equipment and join the dots up to the mirror using a ruler (remember light travels in straight lines!)
17 Investigation Draw the normal at 90º to the mirror surface and measure the angle of incidence and angle of refraction. Angle of incidence Angle of reflection
18 Investigation Investigate a range of angles of incidence from near 0º to near 90º.
19 Conclusion The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.

21 Rules of reflection in plane mirrors 1) The reflected image is the same size of the object 2) The distance between the image and the mirror is the same as the distance between the object and the mirror 3) In the image, left is right and right becomes left 4) Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection
