December 2-5, 2003 MGM Grand Hotel Las Vegas Step-by-Step Photorealistic Renderings in Autodesk Land Desktop By: Harry Ward, PE - Of: OutSource Inc. Code CV33-2L Class Description: This class provides hands-on instruction in how to build surface models; apply grass, asphalt, and other materials; create light sources; and produce magnificent photo-realistic computer renderings entirely in Autodesk Land Desktop. This lab is presented by Harry Ward, PE, the country's leading civil and forensic graphics expert who has worked on public hearings and civil and criminal court cases for over 16 years. About the Speaker: Harry Ward, P.E. Harry is a registered civil engineer who, since 1984, has pioneered computer renderings and animations within the Civil Engineering, Surveying and Litigation industries. His graphics have been used in countless public hearings as well as civil, criminal and personal injury litigation in which he has been certified as an expert witness in the technology. He is the executive vice president for OutSource Inc., a consulting firm and Autodesk Premier Training Center. He has been an engineering professor at George Mason University since 1997, an Autodesk Authorized Consultant since 1991, and an Autodesk Registered Developer since He serves on the editorial advisory board for P.O.B. magazine, on the Autodesk ISD Customer Council, and is GIS chair for AUGI. He also writes feature articles routinely for CE News, P.O.B. CADence/CADalyst, and other magazines and his computer graphics and renderings have
appeared on the front covers of CADence and P.O.B. Magazines. He can be reached at or VRREALITY. Overview for Developing Renderings The general outline of what has to be accomplished in order to produce realistic looking renderings is shown below and will be discussed during the lecture and lab. There will be hands-on examples of how to perform each of these functions that should introduce you to what can be done with AutoCAD and Land Desktop tools. The tasks which must be performed are shown below. Develop 3D Data for Proposed Site and Surrounding Terrain This of course is the majority of the trick. The content must be prepared and few within the civil engineering field are prepared to do this. That is why we must undego a paradigm shift in our way of thinking. We must design in three dimensions, perhaps not on every job, but certainly on those with rendering potential and those which are anticipated to undergo major grading changes. Develop Any Structures Involved These are not always involved but they add a sense of realism to the graphics. Develop Adjunct Data Again, these are not always involved but they add a sense of realism to the graphics. Landscaping People Lightposts, etc. Develop, Customize and Attach Materials This function is where the photo-realism comes in. Use some of the materials that come within the product and construct those which do not. Develop Viewpoints Viewpoint development is crucial to showing the perceived strong points of the project. They should be saved with a functional naming method for later restore. Develop Light Sources Good lighting can make a poor model shine, (no pun intended). Conversely, poor lighting can make a good model appear badly. 2
Procedure for Proposed Surface Development Create the Existing Ground Develop the 3D Data for the project. E.O.P. for 200 x 100 Parking Lot Using Grades Shown Add Curb Returns Join to a Single 3D Poly 3
Step-by-Step Photorealistic Renderings in Autodesk Land Desktop 4 Create Curb for Remaining Curb & Gutter Components Add 3D Building Add Sidewalks, Island and Tie-out Breaklines Add Grading Objects Merge the Surfaces Involved into a Single Surface
Complete all Design in 3D Use Land and AutoCAD for Development and Display of 3D Data Set Viewpoints of Interest Test With the Hide and Shade Commands Develop Materials Paint Stripes, Brick, Grass, Door, Wood Decking, Roof, Custom Sidewalk, Asphalt, Glass, Trees, Concrete, Trees 5
Customize Existing Materials Many of the materials may need to be customized and we will use the tools shown on the previous page to accomplish this. During the lab we will create the following materials and backgrounds. Asphalt > Bumpy Grid Grass > Green Vines >>Adjust Bitmap, Fix Scale Brick > Brown Brick >> Adjust Bitmap, X=4, Y=2.25 Stripes > White Light >> Set all Color Values = 1 Glass > Blue Glass Deck > Wood Medium Ash, Fit Scale, Scale=13.0 Roof > Bumpy Grid-roof >> Bitmap Blend=.19 Ambient=.67,.3,.02 Sidewalk > Tile Pink Granite, or Bumpy White Stone Concrete > Bumpy Metal, Bitmap Blend =.2 Door > Door03, Scale=1, Fit to Object Trees, People > Various, with Variety of Heights Background > Sky Set Light Sources We Need to Create Light Sources Beyond the Default. Begin With a Distant Light, Set to the Following Parameters. Then Create a Scene for This Light and View. 6
Check Rendering of Proposed Site Day Scene Set Light Sources Additional Light Sources Might Include Night Lights. Begin with a Spot Light, set to the Following Parameters. Position it on Top of the Light Posts and Point It Down Then Create a Scene for This Light and View. 7
Check Rendering of Proposed Site Night Scene Conclusion and Summary The Public Expects High-tech Communications The Land Desktop Software Has Been Capable of Creating 3d Models for Over a Decade Land Desktop Has Been Capable of Performing Photo-realistic Renderings for a Decade User s Skill Levels Are Approaching What Is Needed for Producing These Products Management Is Under the Gun to Communicate More Clearly and to More of the Public Than Ever Before NOW Is the Time to Respond! 8
