Quadro FX 4500 will not support 3D stereo LCD monitors. Quadro FX 3700 was minimally tested, and found to perform acceptably with one CRT or 3D stereo LCD monitor; however, roaming in stereo is slow when configured with two monitors. Quadro FX 3500 was not tested, but is expected to perform similarly to the FX Quadro FX 3500 will not support 3D stereo LCD monitors. Please note the following restrictions from NVIDIA Corporation: Quadro FX 4800 cannot be used with 2 CRT monitors. Use of an additional monoscopic monitor (either LCD or CRT) with a Planar 3D Stereo Mirror display is only supported on the Quadro FX 4700 X2. Note: This document was prepared using NVIDIA driver running on Windows XP. Changes to the NVIDIA Control Panel in Windows 7 or on future drivers may make these instructions obsolete. Page 3

4 2. Setting Up the Planar 3D Stereo Mirror Display Hardware The Planar 3D Stereo Mirror display system uses an add-in mirror card to accomplish 3D stereo viewing. The In connector on the mirror card must be connected the graphics card. The Out connector on the mirror card must be connected to the upper Planar monitor. The following sections show you how to connect the cables for the NVIDIA cards that were certified with the Planar display system. Please note that the cards in the photos are installed into the systems upside down. Use the 3-pin DIN stereo connector on the back of your card as a point of reference to determine which way your cards are installed Quadro FX 4600 Page 4

7 3. CRT Display Configuration 3.1 Setting Up CRT Displays Right click on the desktop and select Properties. Select the Settings tab, and click Advanced. On the Monitor tab, clear the Hide modes that this monitor cannot display checkbox: Click OK, then continue to click OK on each dialog until the Display Properties dialog is dismissed. Right click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel. If prompted, select Advanced view. Page 7

9 For use with one CRT, select Only use one display (Single). For two CRTs, select Configured independently from each other (Dualview): Page 9

10 Select Change resolution: Set the desired Display resolution and Refresh rate for the first CRT, and click Apply. A refresh rate of 100 Hz or higher is recommended for stereo viewing. Repeat for the second CRT, if present. Page 10

11 3.2 Configuring the Driver for CRT Displays Select Manage 3D settings: Page 11

14 4. 3D Vision Stereo LCD Display Configuration A separate hardware driver is required for use of 3D Vision Stereo LCD displays for stereo viewing. Install the driver before plugging the 3D Vision stereo emitter into the system. 4.1 Installing the NVIDIA 3D Vision Driver Unplug the 3D Vision stereo emitter, if it is plugged in to the system. Remove any previous 3D Vision drivers, if present, and reboot the system. Install the NVIDIA graphics card driver, if you have not already done so. Reboot. Install the NVIDIA 3D Vision USB Stereo driver. By default, this will copy the files to C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA StereoUSB Driver. Plug the 3D Vision stereo emitter into a USB port on the system. The light on the emitter will glow red. If a 3 pin mini-din stereo cable came with your 3D Vision kit, plug it into the stereo connector on your NVIDIA graphics card. On Windows XP only: The Found New Hardware Wizard will appear. Choose No, not at this time when prompted to connect to Windows Update. Choose Install from a list or specific location (Advanced). Choose Search for the best driver in these locations, and browse to the location where the 3D Vision driver is installed. The default location is C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA StereoUSB Driver. Configure the driver as described in the next section. When the installation is finished and the driver is configured, the light on the emitter will glow dull green. When a stereo application is started, the emitter will glow bright green. If the emitter does not glow bright green, or the application does not display in stereo, reboot the system. Page 14

15 4.2 Setting Up 3D Vision Stereo LCD Displays Right click on the desktop and select Properties. Select the Settings tab, and click Advanced. On the Monitor tab, clear the Hide modes that this monitor cannot display checkbox: Click OK, then continue to click OK on each dialog until the Display Properties dialog is dismissed. Right click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel. If prompted, select Advanced view. Page 15

20 From the Global presets list, select Intergraph ISSD: If you have a 3 pin mini-din stereo cable plugged into your graphics card: Set Stereo Display mode to On-board DIN connector (with NVIDIA IR Emitter). If you do NOT have a 3 pin mini-din stereo cable plugged into your graphics card: Set Stereo Display mode to Generic active stereo (with NVIDIA IR Emitter). Page 20

22 5. Planar 3D Stereo Mirror Display Configuration 5.1 Setting Up Planar Displays Right click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel. If prompted, select Advanced view. Select Set up multiple displays: Page 22

23 For NVIDIA nview Display Mode, select The same on both displays (Clone): Page 23

24 Select Change resolution: Set the desired Display resolution and Refresh rate, and click Apply. A refresh rate of 60 Hz provides smoother stereo roaming than does 75 Hz. Page 24

25 5.2 Configuring the Driver for Planar Displays Select Manage 3D settings: Page 25

27 Under Settings, make sure these features are set as follows: o Enable overlay is set to On. o Exported pixel types is set to RGB overlays (RGB555 format). o Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration is set to Compatibility performance mode. o Stereo Display mode is set to nview Clone mode. o Stereo Enable is set to On. 28 5.3 Configuring an Additional Monitor with the FX 4700 X2 Right click on the desktop and select Properties. Select the Settings tab. Highlight monitor 2 and check Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor: Set the desired Screen resolution for monitor 2. If you desire to change the refresh rate, click the Advanced button and select the Monitor tab. Page 28

29 In the configuration shown above, the Planar display will be the primary monitor. To make the additional display the primary monitor, check Use this device as the primary monitor: If you have physically placed the additional monitor to the left of the Planar display: Drag the monitor 2 icon to the left of monitor 1. Right click on the Taskbar at the bottom of the Planar display. Uncheck Lock the Taskbar, if it is checked: Page 29

30 Place the mouse cursor over the Taskbar. While holding down the left mouse button, drag the Taskbar from the Planar display to the additional monitor. Reboot the system. Page 30

31 6. Configure 3D Settings for ISAT Multiphoto Make sure ImageStation Automatic Triangulation is installed on the system. While still in Manage 3D Settings, select the Program Settings tab. Click Add: Page 31

32 Browse to isat.exe (default location is C:\Program Files\ISAT): Under Settings, make sure these features are set as follows: o Enable overlay is set to On. o Exported pixel types is set to Color indexed overlays (8 bpp). o Stereo Enable is set to On. Page 32

33 Select the setting for Stereo Display mode according to the type of display you are using, as described in previous sections of this document. Click Apply Page 33

34 7. Tips for Optimum Stereo Performance Stereo views must not span monitors. Stretching a stereo view across two monitors will disable hardware acceleration on the graphics card, severely impacting roam performance. View windows must not overlap each other, as this can significantly affect the smoothness of the roaming. Do not allow dialog boxes or menus to overlap any views while roaming, as this can also affect roaming. o Positioning the ISFC Active Feature dialog over the master stereo view does not seem to affect roam performance. Other dialogs do affect performance, even when they are obscured by the master window while roaming is active. 7.1 Windows 7 Tips To achieve the best performance when running stereo applications on Windows 7, you must disable both desktop composition and Aero. To disable desktop composition: Open the Control Panel. Click View >> Small Icons. Click Performance Information and Tools. Click Adjust visual effects. On the Visual Effects tab activate the Adjust for best performance option. Click OK. To disable Aero: Right click on the desktop and select Personalize. Click on any one of the Basic and High Contrast Themes. Page 34

35 With NVIDIA driver in dualview mode on Windows 7, an application that spans two monitors will be truncated to the primary monitor when stereo is activated by the application. Consequently, window layouts must be reconfigured each time the application is started. Stereo views in ImageStation Stereo Display cannot be resized or moved. You must disable stereo in these views, configure them as desired, and then re-enable stereo. Page 35
