2 NCTRC s Mission To protect the consumer of therapeutic recreation services by promoting the provision of quality services by NCTRC certificants. NCTRC Certification Provides for Protection of the Public Recognized standards ensure qualified practitioners (CTRS is recognized as the benchmark of safety) Provide on-line verification services of all active CTRSs NCTRC has an effective peer disciplinary process NCTRC serves as national clearing house for all disciplinary cases NCTRC is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) CTRS The CTRS Credential is the Benchmark of Quality The CTRS is the Qualified Provider of Recreational Therapy Services 2

4 Overview of the Job Analysis Study Conducted in 1987, 1997, 2007 and 2014 Basis for National Certification Exam and model used to define TR/RT practice by NCTRC Informs the CTRS about content areas for continuing education Job Analysis delineates the important tasks and knowledge deemed necessary for competent practice (ICE) Professional Work Experience and Continuing Education Job Analysis Job Tasks (Practical Experience) Areas that determine if an internship, paid work experience for eligibility, or work experience for certification meets the requirements. Knowledge Areas (Conceptual Knowledge) Areas that determine if continuing education for recertification meets the requirements. 4

7 Initial Application Requirements Maintain CTRS active status Verification of 5 years of full-time professional recreational therapy experience within one of the specialization areas 75 continuing education hours specific to one of the specialization areas Initial Application Process Submit application at any time during the 5 year CTRS recertification cycle Initial application fee $25.00 Annual application fee $20.00 May apply for multiple designations of specialization with additional application, fee, and separate support materials Annual Maintenance Annual Maintenance Application and fee are due each year of the certification cycle $20 annually to maintain status of specialization + $80 CTRS Annual Maintenance Fee = $100 Annual Fee Reinstatement process is available for delinquent annual maintenance can reinstate at any time by paying past due fees 7
8 Recertification Requirements Required every 5 years Requested at the time of CTRS recertification Successful completion of specialty designation recertification will result in automatic recertification of the CTRS credential Recertification Requirements Maintain CTRS active status Verification of 5 years of full-time professional recreational therapy experience within one of the specialization areas during the previous 5 year cycle: Direct Service Provider Supervisor Administrator Consultant Recertification Requirements 75 continuing education hours specific to one of the specialization areas professional conferences, workshops, symposia and seminars, authoring professional publications, giving professional presentations, and completing academic courses, continuing education experiences must be specific to the given designated specialty area. same as recertification continuing education interpretive guidelines 8
9 Recertification Process Complete Recertification Application Submit to NCTRC by Due Date Include all required CEU documents Submit appropriate fee Recertification Decision Approved CTRS and designation in Specialization Area are recertified, and certificates are mailed by NCTRC Denied Submit Appeal Application for review by Standards Hearing Committee (SHC) Overturn Staff Decision Award CTRS and designation in Specialization Area Affirm Staff Decision Review Decision for Denial Request Appeal to BOD Summary of Specialty Certification Apply for Specialization in any of the seven (7) areas Review all criteria and requirements Contact NCTRC if you plan to apply Submit the applications by the due date Select CE and Recertification options wisely to advance specialty knowledge and skill Exercise option to appeal denial decision 9
