Miguel de Icaza A Genius Free Software Evangelist Cristhian Figueroa PhD Student Ingegneria Informatica e dei Sistemi Politecnico di Torino 2013
Miguel de Icaza Biography: Born in Mexico (1972). Is a free software evangelist best know for starting the GNOME and Mono projects. He studied mathematics at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México during 90 s but never received a degree. He is cofounder and CTO of Ximian and Xamarin and is one of the foremost luminaries in the Linux development community. His objectives have been addressed to make Linux accessible and available to the average computer user.
Miguel de Icaza Awards: Free Software Foundation 1999 Award for the Advancement of Free Software. [FSF] MIT Technology Review Innovator of the Year Award [MIT] One of Time magazine's 100 innovators for the new century in September 2000 [TIme] In early 2010 he received a Microsoft MVP Award [MVP] In March 2010, he was named as the fifth in the "Most Powerful Voices in Open Source [MindTouch]
Miguel de Icaza: Midnight commander Early Software Career: His first important development for Linux was known as the Midnight Commander file manager: a text-mode file manager which also supported the use of the mouse.
Miguel de Icaza: Gnumeric Early Software Career: Other important project was the Gnumeric a GNOME spreadsheet program He also contributed to the Wine Project that allows to applications designed for MS Windows to run on Unix-like operating systems.
Miguel de Icaza Miguel de Icaza worked with David. S Miller on the Linux SPARC port (Scalable Processor Architecture) which is a RISC instructions set architecture (ISA). Later with Ingo Molnar he wrote the original software implementation of RAID-Q and RAID-5 drivers of the Linux kernel. In 1997 was interviewed by Microsoft for a job in the Internet Explorer Unix team, in that occasion he tried to persuade them to free the IE code. In 2001 he founded Helix Code later named Ximian. Main Projects: Ximian Xamarin
GNOME: GNU Network Object Model Environment Problem Addressed: There were too many technologies missed in the free software world compared to Windows 95. Inconsistencies among X-Window Applications. In that moment KDE was very promising but it was built on Qt toolkit (in that moment a proprietary toolkit) GNOME the Solution: The idea behind GNOME was to make Linux succeed on the desktop using a fully free system and based on the most advanced C toolkit available at the time. De Icaza developed a lot of tools for GNOME: C Compilers Editors Debuggers GNOME becomes an industry standard
GNOME The first version was the 0.10 a single package containing libraris and some applications like the panel. 0.20: first version distributed. It has several packages (core, sadmin, games, libs, media, etc) GNOME 0.x GNOME 1.2
GNOME 3.8 GNOME 3.8
GNOME 3.8 GNOME 3.8
GNOME: Subprojects Subprojects: GNOME Shell: a user interface of GNOME 3. LibXML: an XML library. Gsettings: a configuration storage system GVFS: a virtual file system. GNOME Keyring: backend for storing encryption keys and security information. GNOME Translation Project: for translating documentation and applications GTK+: a widget toolkit used for constructing graphical applications. Human interface guidelines (HIG): research and documentation on building easy-to-use GNOME applications. A complete list of GNOME projects can be found at:

MONO Mono is an effort to build an open-source implementation of the Microsoft.NET framework in order to create cross platform applications History: Microsft launched.net initiative as response to Sun Java Platform..NET based partially in ECMA Standards. In 1999 De Icaza co-funded a Heliz Code company that employed a large number of GNOME hackers. In 2001 the Mono Project was announced. De Icazas declared that the use of C# instead of Java is because.net facilitates the creation of software in different platforms and then translate the code to perl. De Icazas developed something similar named Bonobo which is an API to be used in different programming languages but.net is more efficient.
MONO Characteristics: It is an Open Source (OSI licenses) implementation of Microsoft.NET Framework Based on the ECMA standards for C#. Multiplatform Linux, OSX, MS Windows. Multilangage C# 4.0, VB 8, Java, Python, Ruby, Eiffel, F#, Oxygene Binary Compatible built on an implementations of ECMAS and C# Microsoft Compatible API: ASP.NET, ADO.NET, Silverlight, Windows Forms.
MONO Mono Platform Licenses: The C# compiler and tools are released under terms of the GNU General Public license. The runtime libraries are under the GNU Library GPL html The class libraries are released under the terms of the MIT X11 license
Xamarin In 2011 de Icaza started Xamarin to replace Mono Touch and Mono for Android. Xamarin Versions: Xamarin.iOS (Mono Touch): Build apps for iphone and ipad using C#, Visual Studio or MonoDevelop, and the Mono Framework Xamarin. Android: Build apps for Android devices using C#, Visual Studio or MonoDevelop, and the Mono Framework Xamarin.Mac: Develop native Mac aps in C# Xamarin Studio A Development IDE for Xamarin
Xamarin Architecture
Xamarin Studio
Xamarin: trends Last years people has been interested in xamaring project in order to develop cross platfrom applications. Developed applications with C# can be migrated to cheaper systems based on Linux Using easy but powerful programming languages (C#, VBasic) to build applications for MAC, Android or ios. Xamarin World Interest Source: Google Trends
Differences between Xamarin and Mono Basically Xamarin is the commercial implementation of Mono Ex: Xamarin.Mac is built on the open source MonoMac project. Xamarin.Mac Xamarin.Mac additional features: A commercial license to the Mono Runtime Bindings to new frameworks Creates self-contained application bundles, without external dependencies on Mono. CoreBluetooth GameKit New MountainLion AppKit APIs SceneKit StoreKit Commercial License to the Mono Runtime
