Agenda Definitions for SDN and NFV SDN Drivers and Barriers SDN Use Cases and Applications General Uses Specific Operator Examples Multi-Layer SDN Value Proposition and Demonstrations Discussion and Q&A 2
The Origins of OpenFlow & SDN TR10: Software-Defined Networking Kate Greene March/April 2009 Frustrated by this inability to fiddle with Internet routing in the real world, Stanford computer scientist Nick McKeown and colleagues developed a standard called OpenFlow that essentially opens up the Internet to researchers, allowing them to define data flows using software -- a sort of "software-defined networking Term used to initially, describe OpenFlow use on routed campus networks SDN term has since broadened considerably from the original use: OpenFlow based and non-openflow based definitions New and existing technologies being coopted Suppliers capitalizing on SDN buzz to apply SDN moniker to nearly everything OpenFlow itself has expanded from its original campus use case 3
Some SDN Definitions A Standards Body Definition: Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging network architecture where network control is decoupled from forwarding and is directly programmable. This migration of control, formerly tightly bound in individual network devices, into accessible computing devices enables the underlying infrastructure to be abstracted for applications and network services, which can treat the network as a logical or virtual entity Network intelligence is (logically) centralized in software-based SDN controllers, which maintain a global view of the network." Software-Defined Networking: The New Norm for Networks, April 13, 2012 An Academic Definition: SDN is the separation of the control plane from the forwarding plane Everything else is a benefit that derives from that separation. Nick McKeown, OFC/NFOEC
NFV Definition Network Functions Virtualization Definition: Network Functions Virtualization aims to transform the way that network operators architect networks by evolving standard IT virtualization technology to consolidate many network equipment types onto industrystandard, high-volume servers, switches, and storage, which could be located in datacenters, network nodes, and in the end-user premises It involves the implementation of network functions in software that can run on a range of industry-standard server hardware, and that can be moved to, or instantiated in, various locations in the network as required, without the need for installation of new equipment. 5 5

Drivers & Benefits of SDN Transport Group Priorities Lower capex through lower cost HW AND through more efficient use of network resources and capacity Lower opex especially in maintaining distributed equipment Lower energy costs particularly important for some Interoperability multi-vendor, multilayer, and multi-domain Product Group Priorities New products and features that are only feasible in an SDN environment Reach new customers via virtualized service environment Much faster upgrade cycles for both hardware and software components Faster application/service creation and deployment Drivers and potential benefits of SDN vary by which group is asked 7
Major Barriers to Adoption Major vendors dragging their feet, or lack of clarity on key suppliers and ecosystem builders Issues around legacy OSS Changing the corporate culture (operations, product development) Lack of standards in some areas Lack of orchestration layer Throughput issues at high end Lack of clarity on "hybrid" approaches Latency and other net/app-specific issues 8
SDN Potential Use Cases USE CASE Bandwidth on demand Performance on demand Virtual private cloud Service chaining / traffic steering with SDN Network virtualization multitenant networks ROLE OF SDN Enable programmatic controls on carrier links to request extra bandwidth when needed. API-driven service in which the network dynamically ensures not only that the appropriate capacity is available for a given application but also that a guaranteed level of performance is delivered. Operator offers a virtual cloud service within its network that provides enterprise-grade security, performance, and control attributes associated with a private cloud. In SDN networks, the ability to associate the right traffic to the right appliance, thus making use of the appliance only when needed. (Can be used in conjunction with NFV.) To dynamically create segregated topologically-equivalent networks across a datacenter, scaling beyond typical limits of VLANs today at 4K. Network virtualization stretched networks To create location-agnostic networks, across racks or across datacenters, with VM mobility and dynamic reallocation of resources. 9
Pacnet Enabled Network Network-as-a-Service to Power Enterprises in the Application Aware Age HONG KONG, November 4, 2013 Pacnet today announced the beta launch of the Pacnet Enabled Network (PEN, an industry-first service platform that leverages software-defined-networking (SDN) to deliver flexible and scalable bandwidth configurable by customers, heralding a major advance in the capabilities of enterprises and carriers to build high-performance and cloud-ready networks. Features: Fully automated provisioning with flexible network optimization options Pay for what you use Hybrid cloud gateway 10
NTT Communications British Airways High Life, Oct July 29, Leading the way in enterprise cloud services, and building on the company s initial launch in Japan and Hong Kong in June of last year, NTT Com announced in February 2013 the global availability of its pioneering Software-Defined Networking (SDN)-based Enterprise Cloud with the addition of data centers in Singapore, England, and Virginia and California in the United States. With Enterprise Cloud, NTT Com became the first provider in the world to employ SDN in its global network. 11
Telefónica: Demonstrated Capex/Opex Savings via IP + Optical Layer Integration Telefónica Capex Savings Using Multi-Layer Restoration Source: The Economics of Next-Gen ROADM Networks Heavy Reading Whitepaper, September 2012 Use of multi-layer restoration led to over 37 percent reductions in capital expenditures in IP/DWDM networks Mean time to repair can be extended by a factor of 20 while keeping five nines availability New services could be activated in less than 50 seconds, versus hours without employing multilayer control planes. Homegrown software glued Layers 0 and 3 in this demonstration 12

Some Key Questions & Industry Challenges In addition to ONF/OpenFlow, which other standards and standards bodies will be essential for SDN development? How must transport SDN evolve differently from higher SDN in order to account for the impacts of the analog domain? In which segments will SDN/network-functions-virtualization drive an industry shift toward commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware? Where in the network do operators most require vendor interoperability, and what is driving this need? What is the future of core routing in an SDN-driven world? Can telcos resolve rivalries and tensions among departments and divisions in a way that enables them to fully realize the benefits of SDN? Should the hardware suppliers focus on their hardware and leave the software development around SDN to software specialists? 14
