1 SER 4100 Events Recording System The industry standard for sequential events recording Proven, reliable and easy to use T he SER 4100 events recording system is a versatile high speed distributed microprocessor-based data acquisition system designed to monitor and record, in real time, changes of state of cutomer supplied field inputs with an accuracy of one millisecond. The SER 4100 Events Recording System With flexible configuration and up to seven EIA-232 serial ports available, communications to a wide range of peripheral devices can be achieved. Multiple devices for printing, displaying and storage of data can be supported simultaneously. The SER 4100 has a building block design and versatile communication features in order to accommodate a wide range of capacity and configuration requirements. Its capacity ranges in 64 point increments (one input card) from a maximum of 512 points for a single chassis system to as many as 4096 points for a system consisting of a main chassis and any number of expansion chassis (maximum 64 chassis) from 64 to 512 points. These can be located locally or up to one mile (1.6km) away, affording tremendous configuration flexibility. Whatever your application, the industry standard SER 4100 can meet your needs. 2 A reliable source of time-stamped events data for analysis The SER 4100 is a complete events recording system for medium to large scale plant monitoring applications. Its extensive communications facilities make it especially valuable as front end instrumentation for reducing burden on the main control systems computer. Easy to program and use Programming and operating the SER4100 is simple. All communications are achieved by means of a keyboard terminal device for equipment configuration and operator reports At the same time, the SER 4100 serves as the control rooms indication and recording source for ongoing events data. The system is designed in building block fashion for configuring the required capacity with room for future expansion. A system can consist in size from one 64 point chassis up to sixty four chassis totaling a maximum of 4096 points. The chassis can be grouped together in a single place or located remotely, up to one mile (1.6km) from each other when installed in series via duplex fiber optic interconnecting cables. A maximum of sixty-four remote chassis may be used in sizes from 64 to 512 points for a maximum system size of 4096 points providing a wide range of remote scanning possibilities. In addition to the point number, type of event, and time information, each point can be assigned a 60 character, alphanumeric legend (optionally expandable to 60 additional characters for return-to-normal legends). The following is a typical event printout: A 16: 14: #098 CONDENSER LEVEL HIGH N: 16: 15: #098 CONDENSER LEVEL HIGH This example states that at 14 minutes, seconds after 1600 hours (4pm), point number 98 went into an alarm condition. Then at 15 minutes, seconds after the hour, point 98 returned to normal. The legend for point 98 is CONDENSER LEVEL HIGH. Return-to-normal data is indented two spaces. Programming can also be done through one or more of the EIA- 232 ports from any standard terminal device. Using the keyboard, the following system parameters can be set or changed: N. O./ N. A unique variable debounce filter system The SER 4100 features a unique variable debounce filter system to filter out input noise, prevent nuisance alarms, and allow for relay contact bounce. It is provided by a digital input filter (alarm debounce), adjustable from the keyboard on a single point or group of points basis from one millisecond to 65 seconds. It is also available to debounce a return-to-normal on a per- point basis. Distributed sequential memory storage The SER 4100s distributed sequential memory is capable of storing over 4500 event messages per 64 points on each scanner card. The distribution of memory on separate scanner cards in 64 point increments ensures that the failure of individual cards will not destroy the systems entirememory bank. The SER 4100 features event storage for analysis purposes in the form of a circular historical buffer, whose design is unique in events recording instrumentation. It stores the last 6000 events captured, which can be easily accessed for post fault analysis. By using a keyboard entry, events can be recalled by date, time or address, or by events occurring since the last request, which is particularly useful in unmanned applications. In addition to its external point capacity, the SER 4100 offers eight synthesized or OR points (a synthesized point is an internally generated point driven by one or more inputs assigned to that point, or from one or more internal diagnostic points). Typically, synthesized points can be used to output diagnostic failures, to retransmit a point or a group of points, to provide output to a horn, or in any other application requiring an output related to a single input point or group of points.

3 Seven I/ O Ports enable communication flexibility The real value of the SER 4100 lies in its extensive facilities for communicating with a true diversity of other instrumentation. Paramount is its ability to provide relief for a main control computer, which makes it a valuable front end device. The SER 4100 saves the computer from having to perform events scanning, a function computers are not well suited for, particularly during system upsets and other high-volume event conditions. In all, there are six different EIA-232 output ports available on the SER 4100, with a seventh port configured to accept an IRIG- B clock synchronization input. The EIA-232 inputs provide compatibility for receiving inputs from and/or outputting events data to all of the following: Color CRT displays and serial input window annunciators Printers Printer terminals Various modems (long haul/short haul) Computers Distributed process control systems Programmable controllers GPS satellite receivers (time syncs). The SER 4100 can run output devices at selectable baud rates, data bits and parity checks. Maintain system reliability and security In developing the SER 4100, Qualitrol has paid careful attentionto the kind of details necessary to fully protect the integrity of events data. Self-diagnostics enhance troubleshooting procedures, system or module failure codes are presented on both printer and CRT displays to prompt maintenance personnel. An hourly functional automatic test (including printout) fully exercises the system from input circuit forward. The system crystal controlled clock can be synchronized to the AC line, hourly input pulse, IRIG- B, or satellite receiver. There is battery back-up for both date and time and historical buffer. A programmable security code is available to limit access to the system. Combine events recording with annunciation While the SER 4100 is a system unto itself, it can also be used in conjunction with two types of annunciators. Either combination forms a powerful and complete system of events recording and visual audible annunciation. A color CRT annunciator can be supplied for displaying selected events in color on a screen. Up to 20 events can be presented, with provisions for additional events to be stored in pages of memory. The 60 character legend descriptions can be color-coded in any of eight standard colors. The time field for new alarms appears in a flashing red mode, acknowledged alarms change to a steady yellow, and return-tonormal events are displayed in green. Where window annunciation is required, the 4100 can serve as the scanning source for the Betalarm 1500 serial input distributed annunciator. Several different system levels are available. The diagrams below show typical SER/ 1500 annunciator configurations. Many other configurations are available, depending upon customer requirements.

4 SER 4100 Operator Initiated Reports Functional Test (FT) Initiated by the operator, or automatically every hour. Verifies that all active inputs are being processed and accepted by the input logic. Any input not responding to the test signal in the alarm or normal state will be printed as faulty. Alarm Summary (AS) Prints out all point currently in alarm status. Historical Display (LH) Allows the operator access to the memory block containing the most recent 6000 events. Historical Display Since Last Update (LU) Similar to LH report but lists only the contents of the buffer since the last LU report was requested. List Status (LS) Lists on a per point basis the normally ope/closed status, alarm and return debounce filter times, whether or not the point is enabled, if the point is designated as critical and auto delete/ restore from log parameters. List Exception (LE) Prints out all points that have beenoperator disabled by use of the MS command. List Legends (LL) Reports the legend data stored in battery backed RAM. List Configuration (LC) Prints out the seven port configurations, the status of each of the scanner cards, Alarm or Normal indentation, whether or not the optional battery- backed RAM is implemented and the number of points in the system. List Output Assignments (LO) Lists input point assignments to output devices for each of the six EIA- 232 ports. List Synthesized Points (LP) Reports the status of any or all of the synthesized points A through H. This consists of the point mode and whether the given relay is enabled or disabled. 6 SER 4100 Events Recording System Ordering Information The SER 4100 system consists of a main chassis equipped with a Main Controller Module and optional Auxiliary or Communications Controller Modules. Additional scanner scanner slots in the main chassis can accomodate Input Scanner Modules, Annunciator Output Modules or Fiber Optic Multiplexer Modules and Expansion Chassis may be incorporated when additional slots are required. Three types of chassis are available: The 4100F (full-size chassis) with eight additional slots The 4100S(slimline) chassis with two additional slots The 4100R (redundant chassis) that provides eight slots for Input or Output Modules but also accommodates redundant controller modules.
