Chapter 1: Preparing To Install Decision Support Chapter Topics Introduction The Decision Support Components Decision Support Installation Requirements Installation Guide 17

Preparing To Install Decision Support Introduction Overview This chapter explains the procedures for installing the Decision Support components required for stand-alone operation and for operation as a client on a networked system. The Decision Support Components Overview Decision Support includes several components. You must decide which components to install, based on how you plan to run the application. This section briefly describes these components and tells you which ones must be installed in order to run Decision Support in stand-alone or network mode. Deciding how to run Decision Support Before you install Decision Support, you should consult with the users at your service and support center, to determine which installation method is preferred. The method you select depends on the way you run Decision Support: Stand-alone mode In stand-alone mode, Decision Support runs on one machine, and none of its components is shared with anyone else in the service and support center. The user of the stand-alone system not only has access to the Discovery Interface, but also must administer Decision Support. Network mode In network mode, only Decision Support s client component and PowerPlay are installed on the client machine. The other 18 Tivoli Decision Support 2.0

The Decision Support Components components are installed elsewhere, as described in the following section. The user of a client system has access only to the Discovery Interface; you must administer Decision Support for all clients from the system administrator s system. Understanding Decision Support s components Decision Support includes the following components: Client component Decision Support s client component is the Tivoli Discovery Interface. This is the interface to Decision Support and provides all the tools needed to open and work with views of data from your organization s service and support databases. This component must be installed on every machine where Decision Support is used, whether the program is run in stand-alone or network mode. Server components Decision Support s server components include the models, queries, templates, and other information required to generate views for the Discovery Interface. If any user wants to run Decision Support in stand-alone mode, this component must be installed on that machine, along with the client component. If you plan to run in network mode, this component must be installed on the server. The Tivoli Discovery Administrator This specialized module enables you to administer Decision Support, and to build and customize cubes. This module also assists in the configuration of Decision Support. If any user wants to run Decision Support in stand-alone mode, this component must be installed on that machine along with the client and server components. If you plan to run Decision Support in network mode, this component must be installed on the system administrator s machine. PowerPlay PowerPlay is a third-party application that generates multidimensional cubes and must be installed with Decision Support. PowerPlay should be installed on every machine where Decision Support will be used, whether you run Decision Support in stand-alone or network mode. Crystal Reports Crystal Reports is a third-party application, which may already be installed at your organization. For more information, see Deciding whether to install Crystal Reports, later in this chapter. Installation Guide 19

Preparing To Install Decision Support The Decision Support Installation Wizard enables you to select any or all of these components. The Administrator module is separate from the Discovery Interface, and is installed and operated separately from the Discovery Interface. The Tivoli Discovery Administrator must be installed on at least one system in your organization s service and support center, as follows: If all end users run Decision Support in network mode, then the Tivoli Discovery Administrator should be installed on a single machine (usually the system administrator s system). The Tivoli Discovery Administrator serves all users on the network, as shown in the following figure. If an end user runs Decision Support in stand-alone mode, then the Administrator module must be installed on that machine, and serves only that machine, as shown in the following figure. 20 Tivoli Decision Support 2.0

Decision Support Installation Requirements Deciding whether to install Crystal Reports Although Decision Support s end users do not need to use any Crystal Reports tools, Decision Support uses Crystal Reports templates to generate views of data. Depending on how you want to run Decision Support, you may need to install Crystal Reports, as follows: If you want to run Decision Support in network mode and Crystal Reports is already installed at your organization, then there is no need to install Crystal Reports again. If you want to run Decision Support in network mode and Crystal Reports is not already installed, then Crystal Reports should be installed on the system administrator s system. It is not necessary to install it on any client systems unless you want to create or modify reports. If you want to run Decision Support in stand-alone mode and you want to modify or create reports, then you should install Crystal Reports on that system. You can install Crystal Reports from a separate CD-ROM available with Decision Support. Decision Support Installation Requirements Overview To install Decision Support, you need the following hardware. Client requirements A low-end client machine should meet the following requirements: Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 Installation Guide 21

Decision Support Installation Requirements A high-end file server machine should meet the following requirements: Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 Intel Pentium II 400Mhz machine 128MB RAM Support long file names Hard disk space as outlined in the table in the Disk space requirements section later in this chapter Cube generation server requirements The cube generation server runs as a generation server of multidimensional views of data (cubes) for the Tivoli Decision Support application. Cubes are the data containers used by PowerPlay that Decision Support uses to generate multidimensional views of your organization s service and support data. Cubes vary in size depending on the amount of data that is captured in them. Generally, cubes range from two to seven MB, but some can be larger. Your cube generation server also should have enough disk space for files generated by queries. Each cube has one or more queries it uses to generate data files. These files tend to be much larger than cube files. The cube generation server can be combined with the file server, if cube creation doesn t decrease file service performance. You might combine these two if your cube building tasks are performed at night or during off-hours. See the Tivoli Decision Support Administrator Guide for more information on cube building. A low-end cube generation server should meet the following requirements: Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 Intel Pentium MB RAM Hard disk space as outlined in the table in the Disk space requirements section later in this chapter A high-end cube generation server should meet the following requirements: Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 Intel Pentium II 400 Installation Guide 23
