2 INTRODUCTION Motorala Direct talk radios Motorola cell phones were originally marketed as cell phones and radio combination. The radio feature allowed individual units to communicate with one another without accessing the cell network. Very useful in areas without cell coverage or when immediate radio-like communication was preferred. Simply depress the Press-To-Talk (PTT) button and instantly communicate with another user. No dialing and waiting for a response, no leaving messages, no text button options. Use the radio feature of the Moto-talk style cell phones and do not active the cell phone capability

3 Advantages Inexpensive (I paid $60 for three radios, chargers and SIM cards, extended antennas in 2012) Digital communications clear speech Semi-secure conversations (10 channels and 15 subchannels per channel) Surplus radios can be cannibalized, repaired Chirps to notify if another radio in range Inexpensive Short range preferred sometimes (do you really want everyone listening to the conversation?) Great for kids Durable / MIL-STD-810 models available Unit to Unit or group communications options

4 MOTO-TALK VS FRS/SGRMS GRMS license not needed Moto-talk signal is digital so it is always clear (not garbled and fuzzy like cheap analog) Digital bands are rarely used not crowded Channel / sub-channel combination allows some level of privacy surplus equipment available Similar models technology TriStar exrs: receive poor reviews due to their inability to support multiple communication contacts. Motorola DTR-450 and DTR-650 support private communication, via spread spectrum digital, among both a group and private single point to point. The DTR-650 run around $300 each but also support external antenna. Not sure what the output wattage is though.

5 MORE DETAIL SIM Cards Requires a SIM card to boot the i365 Avoid the models that must be activated on cell-phone network before PTT feature can be used. Advantage of these older PTT cell phones is with the direct radio feature Frequency Motorola picked the ISM Band, (Industrial, Scientific, Medical Band) in the Mhz spectrum. Surplus batteries expensive Not truly secure (several channels and sub-channels can be accessed by someone else with a similar radio)
