USB connection (Compatible with USB1 or 2) in MIDI mode. The MIDI interface allows you to audio files mixing and use your computer for effects, samples, equalization, crossfader... when connected to your computer. 6 English VIRTUALITY-Skill - DJ-dedicated MIDI controller 4 - Preparation Checking the package contents The package must contain the following articles: Your controller This user guide 1 USB cable 1 transport cover Setting up your SKILL Install your controller over an even surface Please make sure your controller is installed in a properly ventilated area, unexposed to sun rays, excessive temperature changes or humidity. First connection to your computer The Virtuality-SKill drivers are compatible with every operating systems aforementioned, your controller does not require extra drivers. Windows Seven, Eight, Vista or XP: An icone will indicate the controller has been detected. The operating system will the install the USB AUDIO DEVICE or USB AUDIO CODEC labeled driver. Please wait for the OS to finish the installation before using your Virtuality-SKill. This process only takes a few seconds, a window indicating the device is ready to be used will appear upon completion of this process. MAC OSX: The interface is detected automatically and no driver installation is required. Use the VIRTUALITY-SCREEN LE software to fully benefit from the many functions of your controller. It is crucial to connect the controller before using VIRTUALITY-Screen LE. Installing VIRTUALITY-Screen: Use your controller serial number and go on to download the latest version. 7 VIRTUALITY-Skill - DJ-dedicated MIDI controller English 5 - Overview Front panel Microphone input Connect a Jack 6.35 microphone here. 2 Headphones output Connect your stereo Jack 3.5 headphones here. Rear panel Master output Line-level output via RCA socket. This analogue output allows you to send your processed signal to an amplifier or mixing desk. 3 USB Port Allows you to connect your controller to a computer. Please refer to paragraph 4-3 for more details. 2 Wheel sensors These two control knobs allow you to adapt the sensitivity of each jog wheel. The minimum position refers to a minimum threshold to activate the jog wheels while the maximum position refers to the least sensitives settings possible. Page 7
8 English VIRTUALITY-Skill - DJ-dedicated MIDI controller Top view Players area All the functions described below depend on the software used with your controller. As your controller is supplied with the VIRTUALITY-Screen LE software, functions described below refer to this software in relation to your VIRTUALITY-SKill. If using another software, please refer to its user guide. The MIDI mapping of your VIRTUALITY-SKill allowing you to configure your device with any MIDI compatible software is available at the end of the user guide. 1 CUE (HOT CUE1) Button CUE : Allows you to save 1 HOT CUE. A CUE point is the exact playback starting point. It can be set anywhere along your track. In Pause mode, press the CUE button to set a CUE point, the button will start flashing. While playing a track, press the CUE button to pause the player and go to your CUE point. HOT CUE1 : Combined with SHIFT, allows you to save a HOT CUE point. Page 8
9 VIRTUALITY-Skill - DJ-dedicated MIDI controller English 2 (HOT CUE2) Button : Allows you to start your track from the CUE point set via the SET CUE button. HOT CUE2 : Press SHIFT and HOT CUE2 simultaneously to add a second CUE point. 3 (HOT CUE3) button : Each pressure on this button alternates between pause and play. HOT CUE3 : Press shift and HOT CUE3 to add a third CUE point. 4 JOG WHEELS Their functions depend on the current mode (Normal, Search or Scratch). Allow you to increase or decrease the track speed in NORMAL mode, fast forward/backward in SEARCH mode, and simulate a scratching effect in SCRATCH mode. 5 PITCH CONTROL Fader Allows you to adjust the current track speed. 6 IN(x1/2) and OUT(x2) Buttons Allow you to create a perfect loop. a - Press IN when playing or pausing a track to set the starting point of your loop. b - Press OUT to set the exit point of your loop. The loop will then be played without any interruption. c - Press OUT again to exit the loop. d - Press IN to replay the loop. This button has no function when the starting point of the loop has not been set. Has the same function than any other CUE point when the exit point of the loop has not been set. e - Press and hold SHIFT and press IN to divide the duration of your loop by 2. f - Press and hold SHIFT and press IN to increase the duration of your loop by 2. 7 SCRATCH (TAP) Button SCRATCH: Press this button to activate the jog wheel SCRATCH mode. TAP: Hold SHIFT and press this button to set the tempo manually. 8 PFL (CLONE A) Button PFL: Allows you to select the source (CH1 and CH2) to be monitored via your headphones. Use the "HEADPHONE" control knob while holding SHIFT to hear both channels simultaneously. CLONE A: Allows you to duplicate and charge the current track on the second channel. 9 KEY (HOT CUE) Button KEY: Press this button to activate/deactivate the MASTER TONE mode. This mode allows you to maintain the tone of your track while modifying its pitch. HOT CUE: Allows you to go to the selected HOT CUE (1, 2 or 3) point. 10 EFFECT (SAMPLE) Button EFFECT: Allows you to activate or deactivate effects. Some effects will require you to hold this button while using them. SAMPLE: If holding down SHIFT, allows you to use samples (please refer to paragraphs 12 and 13 for more details). 11 FX2 Control knob Allows you to adjust the second parameter of effects. NB : Please note that effects do not necessarily have 2 parameters. 12 FX1 (SAMP. VOL.) Control knob FX1: Allows you to adjust the first parameter of effects. SAMP. VOL.: While holding SHIFT, allows you to adjust the sample volume output. Page 9
10 English VIRTUALITY-Skill - DJ-dedicated MIDI controller 13 SELECT (SAMPLE) Control knob SELECT: Allows you to select effects. SAMPLE: While holding SHIFT, allows you to select preset samples. 14 SYNC (LOOP) Button SYNC: Allows you to synchronise the BPM of two tracks by increasing/decreasing their speed of the track you want to synchronise. LOOP: Gives you access to saved loops. 21 Channels 1 and 2 faders Adjusts the volume output of each channel. 22 Cross Fader Allows you to combine channels 1 and 2 faders. Depends on the channel faders. 23 MIC VOLUME Control knob Adjusts the microphone volume. Mixing and equalization area 15 HIGH (KEY) Button HIGH: Adjusts the high frequencies of the current track. KEY: While holding SHIFT, adjusts the Master Tone level. 16 MID (CTRL) Button MID: Adjusts the mid frequencies of the current track. CTRL: While holding SHIFT, allows you to control the Video mode. 17 LOW (EFFECT) Button LOW: Adjusts the basses frequencies of the current track. EFFECT: While holding SHIFT, allows you to manage the transition effects between two video. 18 GAIN Control knob Allows you to adjust the volume input of the channel in question. 19 MASTER Control knob Adjusts the Master output volume. 20 HEADPHONE Control knob Allows you to adjust the sound level of the Headphones output. While holding SHIFT, allows you to adjust the MASTER/PFL balance sent to the Headphones output. Navigation area 24 TRACK (AUDIO/VIDEO) Control knob Track: The TRACK control knob allows you to browse files within a folder. Press ENTER to load a track onto the inactive channel (if not using the LOAD A or LOAD B buttons as described in next paragraph) and conversely. Audio/Video: Allows you to switch from Audio to Video mode. 25 LOAD A (FOLDER) and LOAD B (EFFECT) The LOAD buttons allow you to load the selected track on the A or B side. While holding SHIFT, the LOAD A (FOLDER) button allows you to go up the folder tree. While holding SHIFT, the LOAD B button allows you to activate Video mode effects. 26 SHIFT Button Gives you access to secondary functions (marked in blue or red). NB: These buttons heavily rely on the software used with your controller. Please refer to the user guide of the developers of your software. Page 10
11 VIRTUALITY-Skill - DJ-dedicated MIDI controller English 6 - Basic operations Browsing through folders and selecting a track Use the TRACK knob to browse through folders and files. Use the LOAD A or LOAD B button to load the selected track. or Use SHIFT + FOLDER to go up the folder tree. You can also use the TRACK button to send the track to the inactive channel. Use the TRACK knob to enter a folder or select a file. Playing a track and placing a CUE point Use the PLAY PAUSE button to play a track. Placing a CUE point: - Pause the current track by pressing - Use the jog wheel to place your CUE point - Press CUE to set your CUE point Using the pitch to synchronise two tracks The Pitch fader allows you to increase/decrease the tempo of a track to synchronise it with the track currently being played. Use the KEY button to preserve the tone of the track to be synchronised. Use the SYNC button to synchronise the tracks. - Press CUE/PLAY to go to the CUE point previously set. - Press and to start the playback from the CUE point - While playing a track, the SYNC function synchronises both the tempo and the tracks position - While pausing tracks, the SYNC functions only synchronises the tempos You can also use SHIFT + SCRATCH (TAP) to synchronise tracks. Set the tempo by pressing several times the SCRATCH button. Page 11
12 English VIRTUALITY-Skill - DJ-dedicated MIDI controller Creating loops Use the IN button to set the starting point of your loop, use OUT to set the exit point. Press OUT to exit the loop. Press OUT while playing a track to activate a Use SHIFT + IN to divide the duration of your loop by two. Use SHIFT + IN to double the duration of your loop. 4-beat automatic loop. Press IN to replay the loop. Using headphones Use headphones to monitor the track you are about to play. Use the corresponding PFL button to listen to a track. Use SHIFT + HEADPHONE to monitor the MASTER output and a track simultaneously. Position the fader on the left to increase the MASTER monitoring output, position it on the right to increase the track volume output. Use the HEADPHONE control knob to adjust the output level. Using effects Use the EFX (S) control knob to select an effect. Use FX1 and FX2 to configure your effect. Please note that some effects do not have 2 adjustable parameters and FX2 might not have any function. Using samples Your Virtuality-SKill features preset samples. You can access them via the control knob used for effects. Press SHIFT and use the EFX (S) control knob. Press ON/OFF to launch the effect. Press this button again to stop it. Use FX1 (S) to adjust the selected sample volume output. Press SHIFT and ON/OFF to launch the sample, press again to stop it. Page 12
13 VIRTUALITY-Skill - DJ-dedicated MIDI controller English 7 - Installing and configuring the Virtuality-screen LE software VIRTUALITY-Screen LE is not supplied with your VIRTUALITY-SKill. In order to download it, please go on to find the product page of your VIRTUALITY-SKill. Click on the download link. You will then be redirected to the Atomix Production, the developer's website. Save the installation pack, then launch the setup wizard. The following steps describe the installation process: 1 Select your language, the setup wizard will detect the language of your OS automatically. Press OK. 4 Select the installation folder, then click Next. 5 Click Next. 2 Please read the license information, then click Next. 6 Click Finish to finalise the installation process. 3 Click Next. You must connect your VIRTUALITY-SKill to your computer before launching its software. 1 During the first connection to the software, a window asking you to type a serial number will appear. This number is located at the rear of your device. 3 In some cases, however, your operating system might not be fully compatible with the driver of your VIRTUALITY-SKill. In that situation, please go the page dedicated to your device on and download the ASIO driver. Install this driver and launch VIRTUALITY-Screen LE. Click CONFIG in the upper right corner of the VIRTUALITY-Screen LE window. Use the drop-down menu to select "Sound card(s)", then "ASIO DRIVER" and click OK. 2 The software window is as follows: Page 14
